Basilica Schola
The Basilica Schola is in session for the 2015-2016 season. We already have welcomed new members,
but hope you will join us too! We schedule informal "auditions" during the year for anyone interested in joining. It is a great way
to enhance your spiritual life, meet fellow parishioners, and deepen your understanding of the tradition. Contact Joshua,
our Cantor: [email protected] to learn more. Hear our latest record-
ing, available on iTunes, and find out more about the music ministry at

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Music for Divine Mercy Because of the preeminence of Easter feast in the liturgical calendar, the Church extends that celebration for seven days, called the Easter Octave. Each day of Easter Week is a solemnity of high rank, and rituals peculiar to Easter (like the double “Alleluia” sung at the dismissal, and the sequence Victimae Paschali laudes) are continued each day during Easter Week. This Sunday, known as Low Sunday, and named “Divine Mercy Sunday” by John Paul II, is the Octave of Easter. In some countries, it still goes by the name Quasimodo Sunday, a name which has its origin in the Introit for this day, “Quasi modo geniti infantes…” (“As newborn babies…”, from 1 Peter 2:2). These words are used by the Church with special reference to the newly baptized neophytes, as well as in general allusion to man’s renovation through the Resurrection. With the coming of St. Faustina’s relics, I thought it good to do as many different hymns as possible at the many Masses this week-end, both traditional Easter hymns and ones that focus on mercy. In addition, at the 12:45 PM and 7:00 PM Masses we will hear two great works of music, emanating from Southeastern Germany and the Baltic states. First, the Christe eleison from J. S. Bach’s “Great Catholic Mass”, the Mass in B minor—a cornerstone of Western music. In 1733, at the death of Augustus II Strong, Polish King, Grand Duke of Lithuania and Elector of Saxony, five months of mourning followed, during which all public music-making was suspended. Bach used the opportunity to work on the Missa, a portion of the liturgy sung in Greek and Latin common to both the Lutheran and Roman Catholic rites. His aim was to dedicate the work to the new sovereign Augustus III, a Catholic, with the hope of obtaining the title “Electoral Saxon Court Composer”, which he eventually was made in 1736. The full Ordinary wasn’t completed until shortly before his death, in 1749. The second piece, written in 1990 by the famed Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, encompasses the Sermon on the Mount, giving us the template for corporal works of mercy. There is a choral first part, and at the 12:45 PM Mass, I’ll play the second portion of the work as an organ postlude.

During this Jubilee Year we are called to help one another and be merciful as Jesus is for all our sins. It is only with your help that the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal continues to be a beacon of hope for our brothers and sisters through ministries and charities.
Every year the Archdiocese sets a goal for each parish. This year the goal for the merged parish of St. Patrick's Old Cathe-dral and the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood is $47,000. Please pray over this and make a gift that will assist those in need around us. You can learn more about the Appeal at www.cardinalsappeal.org

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is honored, with the blessing of Cardinal Dolan, to have HOLY DOORS at its sister church, the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood for the duration of the Holy Year. With these Holy Doors open 24hrs a day, pilgrims passing through them will benefit from indulgenc-es and blessings. Pilgrims will reflect on the major theme of the Holy Year – the universal reach of God’s mercy – by viewing a display of presepio, crafted in this city of Naples by La Scarabattola. For those in a state of grace and fulfilling the other prescribed conditions, a plenary indulgence may be gained once day by passing through the Holy Doors. A plenary indulgence removes all punishment due to sin.
Those seeking the indulgence are encouraged to begin a pilgrim-age starting at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral where a Prayer of Mercy may be said. The pilgrim then may proceed down to the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood where the Holy Doors of Mercy are located.

SAINT ANTHONY NOVENA: This past Tuesday we celebrated the third week of the St. Anthony Novena and Mass led by Monsignor Roman Russo. Many of you are aware of our monthly senior luncheons which usually fall on a Tuesday; in addition, for the duration of the 13-week St. Anthony Novena, we will be serving light refreshments after the novena Mass – coffee, cookies, muffins, etc. For this week’s coffee gathering – our first -- we want to thank Anna Maniscalco for providing our seniors with home-made goodies. Anna made banana-nut bread and two kinds of muffins. The best thing about this is that she was not asked to contribute anything – she just did it and we thank her for it from the bottom of our hearts. To make it even better, everything was delicious! Thank you, Anna.
SAINT FAUSTINA RELICS: This weekend, April 2 – 3, relics of Saint Faustina will be on display at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. From there, many people are expected to make the pilgrimage from St. Pat’s to Most Precious Blood Church. In anticipation of this event and the expected number of visitors to our church this Sunday, Monsignor Sakano decided we should have TWO MASSES ON SUNDAY: 12:15 PM and 1:15 PM. TO CLARIFY: We will have Masses THIS SUNDAY ONLY – April 3rd -- in conjunction with the relics of Saint Faustina being displayed. This Sunday is also DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY. For those who miss their Sunday Mass, please attend one of the two Masses we will have at 12:15 PM and 1:15 PM. The regular Vietnamese Mass will be at approximately 2:00 PM, depending upon when our 1:15 PM Mass ends. After this week-end, we will revert back to our schedule of the Saturday 5:30 PM Vigil Mass with Sunday Mass taking place at St. Patrick’s or any other church of your choice.
ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS DAY REMINDER: Please remember to mark your calendars so that you can attend our Alzheimer’s Awareness Day on May 3, 2016. The event will be held from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM inside the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood. The event is FREE. It is being sponsored by the Most Precious Blood Senior Club and participants include Archcare, CaringKind, God’s Love We Deliver, New York Foundation
