but hope you will join us too! We schedule informal "auditions" during the year for anyone interested in joining. It is a great way

to enhance your spiritual life, meet fellow parishioners, and deepen your understanding of the tradition. Contact Joshua,

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Our Offertory hymn Draw Us in the Spirit's Tether, was written in 1945 by one of America's most influential church musicians of the 20th century, Harold Friedell (1905-1958). The beloved hymn, with text by English theologian and author Percy Deamer (1867-1936), is often sung as a choral anthem in Roman Catholic churches as well as churches of other Christian denominations. Born in Queens, New York on May 11, 1905, the young Harold began his church music career as the organist at the Methodist Church of Jamaica, Long Island before eventually serving on the faculties at the Julliard School of Music, the Guilmant Organ School (at First Presbyterian on Fifth Ave.), and later teaching composition and improvisation at the School of Sacred Music of Union Theological Seminary in New York (which later became the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, headed up by Dr. Robert Baker from First Presby-terian). He became organist-choirmaster at Park Avenue’s esteemed St. Bartholomew’s Church. People flocked to St. Bartholo-mew’s to hear the superb professional choir of 70 voices (!!) sing weekly Sunday afternoon services (Evensong) where the great choral repertoire of oratorios, passions, requiems, and recently composed works were performed in their entirety following the sung propers of the daily office. The Communion organ meditation was written by the mysterious Giovanni Battista Fasolo, O.F.M. (Asti, ca. 1598 – Palermo after 1664), a Franciscan friar, organist, and composer. In his middle years Fasolo was primarily known for his 1645 organ annual, which, like L'organo suonarino of Adriano Banchieri, from the generation before him, was intended for use in small parish churches. In 1659 Fasolo became maestro di cappella to the Archbishop of Monreale, whose Cathedral contained some very im-portant early pipe organs. The Cathedral of Monreale is one of the greatest extant examples of Norman architecture in the world. It was begun in 1174 by William II, and in 1182 the church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was, by a bull of Pope Lucius III, elevated to the rank of a metropolitan cathedral. There are many relationships between the architecture of St. Bart’s and the Cathedral of Monreale!

BAPTISM PREPARATION

If you are expecting a new baby or if she/he is already here, be sure to let us know. Then go to our website and acquaint

yourself with what to do next to be prepared for the renewal of your own baptismal vows and the baptism

of your child. Next Session for parents and godparents is:

Monday, July 11 at 7:00pm.

Many visitors as well as parishioners ask whether our stained glass windows are new. Well, no, but what makes them look new as when they were first installed is that they were re-leaded and cleaned. However, the entire wood frame and tracery of each window had to be fabricated from hard wood. All this work had to done by hand since each window is slightly different in size.

The next four windows will be installed within the next couple of weeks. The hues and colors of the interior of the basilica will change accordingly.

UPDATES

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is honored, with the blessing of Cardinal Dolan, to have HOLY DOORS at its sister church, the

Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood for the duration of the Holy Year. With these Holy Doors open 24hrs a day, pilgrims passing through

them will benefit from indulgences and blessings. Pilgrims will reflect on the major theme of the Holy Year – the universal reach of God’s

mercy – by viewing a display of presepio, crafted in this city of Naples by La Scarabattola.

For those in a state of grace a plenary indulgence may be gained once day by passing through the Holy Doors. A plenary indulgence removes

all punishment due to sin.

Those seeking the indulgence are encouraged to begin a pilgrimage at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. The pilgrim then may

proceed down to the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood where the Holy Doors of Mercy are located.

What are Infancy Narratives in the Gospels?

The Cardinals’ Appeal is an annual campaign to raise funds throughout the Archdiocese to support the wide array of services and programs that serve people in need.

During this year of Mercy, it is more important than ever to be actively aware of the needs of our brothers and sisters in need. The Cardinal’s Appeal addresses a wide range of human needs in neighborhoods of the Archdiocese. Many people and whole families are in crisis due to changes in economy as well as challenges that come to them through illness or accidents. In addition, the Cardinal’s Appeal assist in the education of youngsters and the care for older people who have become frail, including nuns and priests.

GOAL The Cardinal has asked our parish to raise $47,000. As of last Friday, we are at $37,255. This amount has been pledged by only 66 people! Next Sunday, you will be asked to participate in this important effort by making a gift of whatever amount you can afford. Keep in mind, that the responsibility to care for those in need is everybody’s job.

You can make a gift to the Cardinal’s Appeal by using a pledge card provided or by going to the website at www.cardinalsappeal.org. Don’t forget to use our designated number ( #94) when you make you gift.

Fr. VALMORE MANTOVANI is a Pastor of a parish near Venice, Italy. He will be with us

while he vacations here during the month of July.

Tuesday, June 28 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM Parish House ~ 263 Mulberry Street

As an introduction to studying the New Testament, this session will focus on “The Infancy Narratives” in the Gospels of Mat-

thew and Luke. The issues of Inspiration, Canonization, Authorship will be reviewed as well as an overview of how the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke came to be so similar and

yet so different.

COMING IN THE FALL A three-session course called “An Introduction to the New Tes-tament”. Students will meet on one evening for three consecu-tive weeks (dates to be determined). The course will provide a

foundation for further exploration into the other parts of the Bible such as the Pentateuch, Prophets, Psalms, Gospels, Acts, Letters, Revelation. This three-session course will be repeated

three or four times during the year in order to attract newcomers to Bible study.

Meanwhile, there will be other courses on the Bible for people who have completed the “Introduction” or who have enough of a foundation to take mini-courses on the sections of the Bible

mentioned in the paragraph above.

BULLETIN NEWS – JUNE 18-19, 2016

DONATION REQUEST LETTER: A few weeks ago, our Project Manager, Bill Russo, reached out to the business community in

Little Italy to encourage them to support Most Pre-cious Blood Church. We

currently have a number of programs going on that

affect our community, our seniors and our beautiful

church – all of which require money if they are to continue. Letters went out to the businesses out-lining some of these projects so that anyone donating will have an idea of how their money will be used.

We are happy to say that two businesses responded immediately and we would like to publicly thank them for their generous contri-butions: EILEEN’S ‘SPECIAL’ CHEESE CAKE and BENITO 1 RESTAURANT. We pray blessings come their way, both person-ally and perhaps in the form of new customers to help keep their businesses thriving. We need to help each other – isn’t that why we’re here and what God expects from us? Thanks again to these generous merchants.

MPB SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB: Our next luncheon will be this Tuesday, June 21st. Lunch will begin at 1:00PM, as usual, in the dining room at the rectory of Most Precious Blood Church.

SAN GENNARO NOVENA MASSES: Most Precious Blood Church will have a weekly Mass in honor of San Gennaro. San Gennaro’s Masses will begin this Wednesday, June 22nd. MPB houses the National Shrine of San Gennaro and, as such, a weekly Mass in his honor is a great way to honor this beloved saint and to give our parishioners a Mass during the week as they’ve been re-questing. Fr. George Kuhn will be celebrating Mass the first cou-ple of weeks.

FATHER’S DAY: Today, June 19th, is Father’s Day. Being a dad – a good dad – is one of the hardest jobs there is. We want to wish ALL fathers a very Happy Father’s Day, and we pray for all of them – living and deceased. We include in our prayers anyone who has been a father-figure to someone: brothers, uncles, friends, our priests, etc. May God bless each and every one of you here on earth or in heaven.
