Financial Stewardship for January 16 & 17: Building Fund $ 12,276.97 Offertory $ 15,343.97 One Voice $ 102.00
Financial Stewardship The US bishops’ pastoral on stewardship reinforces
today’s reading from I Corinthians: “Because its individual members do collectively make up the Body
of Christ, that body’s health and well-being are the responsibility of the members- the personal
responsibility of each one of us. We all are stewards of the Church.” Scriptural Rosary
A Scriptural Rosary recital is held at 8:30 am on the first Saturday of each month in the Day Chapel. In the Scriptural Rosary, one or two lines from the Bible are said before
each Hail Mary. The whole rosary takes about 25 minutes. Please bring your family, children and friends on February 6. All you have to do is join in saying the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be or just pray along silently. Reading 1: Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19
Reading 2: 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 Gospel: Luke 4:21-30

Sunday Programs - 9:45 am - 10:45 am
Childcare services are available at the POP Nursery during Sunday morning programs. Resurrection and the Afterlife in the New Testament St. Monica Room Central to our Christian faith is a belief in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Dr. Candida Moss, noted Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame, helps us understand the significance of that belief. On January 24, we will discuss Revelation 2: The Lake of Fire. Facilitated by Sonya Phillips and Mike Brown.
Scripture in “Action” St. Elizabeth Room
Weekly gatherings discuss the current week’s readings and how the words of Scripture speak to us. Help share in gaining a better understanding of God’s message in Scripture as we discuss the Sunday readings, how they relate to us today, and seek ways to apply God’s message in our daily lives. Led by Tom & Elsbeth Germanson.
Religious Education
“Helping Restless Teens to Focus on Faith – Part 1 of 3”
In our technology-obsessed youth culture, the many hours most teens spend gazing at the flickering screens on their phones,
video games, and computers is inducing the sociological equivalent of Attention Deficit Disorder. Young people are
accustomed to switching rapidly from one screen to the next, scanning for meaning without stopping to read deeply, their
brains attracted primarily to pictures and highlighted information. While this tendency can make them efficient information
gatherers and community builders, they tend to be restless learners with short attention spans.
To make matters worse, according to studies around the world, too much screen time can cause social isolation and lead to
sleeplessness, anxiety, and depression. In 2009, for the 43rd World Communications Day, Pope Benedict XVI, the first
Roman pontiff to utilize a Twitter account, made this cautionary statement: “If the desire for virtual connectedness becomes
obsessive, it may in fact function to isolate individuals from real social interaction while also disrupting the patterns of rest,
silence, and reflection that are necessary for healthy human development.”
His words have been prophetic. (Our Sunday Visitor, Lisa Mladinich)
Please continue to keep the children, their families and teachers in your prayers as they continue the Faith
Formation of our parish children.

Centering Prayer Group Centering prayer is not just a method. It is a true prayer at the same time, a prayer consenting to God’s presence and action within. Its primary scriptural basis is Jesus’ wisdom saying in Matthew 6:6: “If you want to pray, enter your room, shut the door, and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret, will reward you.” Thomas Keating in Open Mind, Open Heart. We meet on Thursdays at 6:30 pm in the St. Elizabeth Room for approximately 45 minutes. If you feel called to this form of prayer, please join us! If you are interested in learning more about this contemplative practice, please contact Ken Wade at 205.612.5078 or email [email protected].

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19: 23-24) Supreme Court Strikes Down Part of Florida Death Penalty
Nina Totenberg, Correspondent, Legal Affairs, npr.org
The U.S. Supreme Court struck down Florida's death sentencing system as unconstitutional ..., casting doubt on the status of all the state's death sentences. Florida ranks second in the nation in the number of death row inmates, with 390 men and women currently awaiting execution. Florida law allows juries in capital cases to recommend a sentence of death, or life in prison without parole — but it is the judge who is charged with finding facts, and judges can and do frequently disregard the jury's recommendation. Indeed, since the state death penalty law was enacted in 1972, judges have disregarded the jury's advisory on some 300 occasions, imposing either the harsher penalty of death or the lesser penalty of life.
In declaring that system unconstitutional, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, writing for the court majority, said that the Sixth Amendment right to a jury trial "requires a jury and not a judge to find each fact necessary to impose a sentence of death." A jury's "mere recommendation is not enough," she said. (npr.org web site)
