He discussed the value of play under the heading: "Regarding Modesty in Outward Bodily Acons". Just as the body needs rest from its labours so, too, the soul needs repose, which "lies in slackening the tension of mental study and taking some pleasure.St. Thomas used the story concerning St. John the Evangelist related by Cassian, a 4th Cent. Chrisan writer. One day, several persons found St. John relaxing with his followers. The onlookers were scandalized that the Beloved Disciple of Jesus - the author of the Fourth Gospel and three Epistles - would be recreang. The Apostle asked one of the amazed to shoot his arrow. Then, St. John inquired whether he could connue shoong the arrow indefinitely. No, the man argued, because the bow would eventually break. The Evangelist keenly observed that our souls, also, will "break" if we do not provide them with obligatory rest. While play is good, St. Thomas sounded a trio of warning: "The pleasure should not be sought in anything indecent or harmful." Even the non-Chrisan Cicero classified some jokes as discourteous, imprudent, obscene or shameful.) We should take care not to lose our direcon. St. Ambrose, Bishop and Doctor, commented that the harmony of our good works could be destroyed when we recreate if we do not exercise cauon. Our play - like other acons - is "to suit the person, place and me, and to be duly adopted to circumstances." Cicero remarked that relaxaon should fit both the hour and the person. St. Thomas, based on Aristotle, wrote that one specific virtue is connected to play: "cheerfulness or well-turned wit A wise and virtuous man will somemes turn to them(that is, "playful words and deeds"). Two other inquiries were also posed. Is unnecessary play evil? Is too lile play, sinful? St. Thomas contended that yes, truly superfluous play is wrong because it is excessive to the rule of reason. For instance, if one were to use improper gestures or words or those that would harm another, this recreaon would be immoral. Or, a similar acvity is wrong if the playing "is mismed or misplaced or unsuitable to the business in hand or company." This Dominican master of theology taught that yes, not enough play is sinful because it is defecve to the rule of reason. He submied: "It is against reason for a man to be burden- some to others, by never showing himself agreeable to others or being a kill-joy or wet blanket on their enjoyment." Moreover, "those who lack playfulness are sinful, those who never say anything to make you smile, or are grumpy with those who do." Rest and enjoyment are not "ends" in them- selves but rather assist us in the pursuit of authenc holiness: the everlasng aainment of God in Paradise. If we have not heeded St. Thomas' counsel, now is a perfect me to experience the beauty of recreaon. May God be adored in our work and in our repose! Deacon Langford Vincent, R.I.P. The Splendour of Recreation By Msgr Charles M. Mangan

One might be surprised to discover that St. Thomas Aquinas

(c. 1225-1274), in his monumental Summa Theologiae,

addressed the topic of "play." What is the place of recreation in

the Christian life? He discussed the value of play under the

heading: "Regarding Modesty in Outward Bodily Actions". Just

as the body needs rest from its labours so, too, the soul needs

repose, which "lies in slackening the tension of mental study

and taking some pleasure.” St. Thomas used the story

concerning St. John the Evangelist related by Cassian, a 4th

Cent. Christian writer. One day, several persons found St. John

relaxing with his followers. The onlookers were scandalized

that the Beloved Disciple of Jesus - the author of the Fourth

Gospel and three Epistles - would be recreating. The Apostle

asked one of the amazed to shoot his arrow. Then, St. John

inquired whether he could continue shooting the arrow

indefinitely. No, the man argued, because the bow would

eventually break. The Evangelist keenly observed that our

souls, also, will "break" if we do not provide them with

obligatory rest.

While play is good, St. Thomas sounded a trio of warning:

"The pleasure should not be sought in anything indecent or

harmful." Even the non-Christian Cicero classified some jokes

as discourteous, imprudent, obscene or shameful.) We should

take care not to lose our direction. St. Ambrose, Bishop and

Doctor, commented that the harmony of our good works could

be destroyed when we recreate if we do not exercise caution.

Our play - like other actions - is "to suit the person, place and

time, and to be duly adopted to circumstances." Cicero

remarked that relaxation should fit both the hour and the

person.

St. Thomas, based on Aristotle, wrote that one specific virtue is

connected to play: "cheerfulness or well-turned wit … A wise

and virtuous man will sometimes turn to them” (that is, "playful

words and deeds"). Two other inquiries were also posed. Is

unnecessary play evil? Is too little play, sinful? St. Thomas

contended that yes, truly superfluous play is wrong because it

is excessive to the rule of reason. For instance, if one were to

use improper gestures or words or those that would harm

another, this recreation would be immoral. Or, a similar activity

is wrong if the playing "is mistimed or misplaced or unsuitable

to the business in hand or company."

This Dominican master of theology taught that yes, not enough

play is sinful because it is defective to the rule of reason.

He submitted: "It is against reason for a man to be burden-

some to others, by never showing himself agreeable to others

or being a kill-joy or wet blanket on their enjoyment."

Moreover, "those who lack playfulness are sinful, those who

never say anything to make you smile, or are grumpy with

those who do." Rest and enjoyment are not "ends" in them-

selves but rather assist us in the pursuit of authentic holiness:

the everlasting attainment of God in Paradise.

If we have not heeded St. Thomas' counsel, now is a perfect

time to experience the beauty of recreation. May God be

adored in our work and in our repose!

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR CREATION - 1st Sep

Pope Francis has established 1st September as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, encouraging the Catholic community around the world to pray for our common home. The day is inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si, which calls on "every person living on this planet" to care for our shared Earth. On this Day of Prayer, let us “reaffirm [our] personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to implore his help for the protection of creation, as well as his pardon for the sins committed against the world in which we live.” Here is a prayer from our Bishops' Conference that you can say:

Father, Lord of all creation, we praise you with all your creatures and the whole universe that comes forth from the work of Your hands.

We acknowledge the privilege and responsibility that You give us as stewards of Your creation.

In our ignorance we have done damage to our common home and our brothers and sisters are suffering.

Through faithfully following your Son guide and direct us to prepare for a better future.

Teach us to contemplate You in the beauty of the universe.

Give us the grace to recognise, respect and protect all You have created, using wisely all that you have entrusted to us.

Holy Spirit, who first hovered over the dawn of creation and drew order out of the chaos help us to build your kingdom of justice, love, peace and beauty where the poor of the earth are crying out.

You, who live and reign, world without end, Amen.
