The Massena News does not accept responsibility for errors, misprints orinaccuracies published within. The opinions and statements of ourcolumnists are not to be presumed as the statements and opinions of Massena News.

“Know everything you can about what you’re doing”—Fred Trump (Donald’s father) said. “The more you learn, the more you realize how much you don’t know.”—Donald Trump said.

Great people share their wisdom so that others maylearn, be happy, and be prosperous. I believe thatAmerica will continue to be the great prosperous nationthat our forefathers have designed it to be. It’s not thatwe are no longer a great nation. It’s that many othernations have learned economics 101 from us, and havelearned from our wisdom, and applied it to their ownbusiness ethics; hence, the financial strengths of thosenations have come up to par with our own. Now, manynations—America included—are on the same level in therace. Who’s going to take the lead is yet to be seen. (Mythoughts and prayers go out to Japan right now! MayGod help them back up!) Business models all across theglobe continue to change drastically at the helm of theinternet, and since the advent of eCommerce, the playingfield is wide open. Anyone can get in the race. And, Imean anyone! There is a free flow of commerce spanningnot just across our nation but across the entire globe.

So, as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, I thoughtit would be a good idea to interview the Chamber. Why?—Well, I already knew they were doing a great job,but I wanted to write about it, because the Chamber ofCommerce has a moral obligation to their community tobe the best that they possibly can. Right? Absolutely. With so many of our brave men & women serving in theArmed Forces, it is incumbent upon us all to do theabsolute best we can with what we have—for each other, for our community, for America—for our troops, who areserving gallantly, for the sacrifices they have made. It’simportant.

Many men & women in uniform have paid the ultimateprice. We must do everything in our power to keep ournation strong. Work smart. Work Hard. Market. Network.Buy. Sell. Trade. Keep the faith, and keep it going.“Semper Fi”, as the Marines say—which is Semper Fidelis(Latin): always faithful. Back in the day, as a member ofthe elite 1st Ranger Battalion, I’ve always enjoyed thetimes I spent working with Marines. The Ranger motto“Sua Sponte” (Latin): of their own accord, means thatRangers serve because they want to—that they areenduring more than others because they want to, out oftheir own free will—not because they have to! Every unitin our Armed Forces has a meaningful and significantmotto to live by. So, yeah, the ethics of leaders and othersin positions of influence & power back here in the Statesare decisively important. So, yeah, the Massena Newswanted to know—for you, the Reader (who may or maynot have already known)—about the leadership in theMassena Chamber of Commerce. And, I am happy toreport that it is as morally strong as it should be. Ourtroops would be proud!

Introducing the MassenaChamber of CommerceIt is with great honor that the Massena Newsis introducing the Massena Chamber ofCommerce and the board of Directors thereof(not all of whom were present at the photoshoot). “The Chamber is working tirelessly tosupport its members and to support thecommunity of Massena to make it a betterplace to live,” said Michael Gleason, theExecutive Director. He, along with thePresident (Susan Flynn) and the 1st VicePresident (Eric Gustafson) of the Chamber hadmuch to say when interviewed on March 17for this article that you’re reading, of whichwas an honor to conduct and report upon.During the interview, they exuded the prideof the Chamber’s past, enthusiasm towards itsfuture, and loyalty to its community. Theymirror the ideals of their long lineage ofpredecessors that traces back almost 80 years.(This May will be the Chamber’s 80thanniversary). It is in the optimism, energy, motivation, and vigor of this spirit that thesethree spearhead the Chamber in helpingbusinesses embrace problems and turn thoseproblems into challenge, and challenge intosuccess. Even today, when one can onlywonder how many communities across ournation are collapsing and are on the brink ofinsolvency, Massena remains strong.Massena’s viability, it goes without saying, should be partially (if not mostly) attributedto the leadership of the Chamber, and the

Is it Time to Work for Yourself?

(Family Features) The tight job market has a growing number of people looking tobecome their own boss. In a September 2010 Citibank small business survey, 81percent of small business owners still like or love what they do, and 75 percent saidthey would start their businesses again, even knowing about the challenges theywould face.

But starting a business in a recession isn't always easy. Getting a bank loan istough and credit card companies are reducing lines of credit. One way to feedyour entrepreneurial drive in this economy is to consider a career in directselling.

Direct sales is a dynamic industry - one that many entrepreneurs and stay-at-home parentsare diving into. According to the Direct Selling Association, more than 15 million people sold about $30 billionin products and services in the US in 2008. Nearly one-third of those sales were for personal items such as cosmetics, jewelry, and skin care.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Direct Selling Association Education Foundation (DSAEF) have partnered to help educate thoseinterested in pursuing direct sales for themselves.

Here are three questions the BBB recommends asking if you're thinking about a career in direct sales:

• Do I have what it takes to be a good salesman? Most natural sales people are outgoing, comfortable speaking in public, and self-motivated. But those are skills that can also be acquired. Before diving in, make arrangements to shadow several direct sellers so

you can see what it takes to be successful.

• Is this a product I can believe in? Genuine excitement is catching, so if you really believe in theproduct, a lot of the work is already done for you. And the opposite is true, too - ifyou wouldn't buy the product for yourself, you'll have a very hard time selling it to anyone else.

• Do I risk financial loss by joining the company? Legitimate companies generally have lowstart-up costs - typically less than $100. It's also very important to understand the company'sbuy-back policy so that you will know your rights should you choose to quit the business.

Direct selling can be very rewarding. Denise Pagano from New York did her homeworkand decided to become an Independent Beauty Advisor for L'Bel, a premium skin careand cosmetics company. "Once I tried the products, I couldn't wait to start sharingthem with my friends," she said. "I felt good about working for a company that's had

over 40 years of success, and it's turned out to be a great fit for me. I get to set my own hours,I can sell online, one on one, or at L'Bel Beauty Parties - whatever works best for me."

Denise has also benefited from the coaching and education provided by L'Bel, as well as the online support offered. "Inmy Beauty Advisor Office Suite, I can communicate with people, manage my business and access more training and resources." To

find out if working with L'Bel could be a possibility for your career, visit www.lbelusa.com.

You're engaged! Now what? The topfive wedding planning questions toanswer first

(ARA) - Holiday season is engagement season. But after he pops thequestion and she says "yes," the reality of wedding planning sets in -and that feeling of joyful romance can fade as quickly as Christmaslights on an overloaded circuit. Here are the top five questions youwill need to answer to make your wedding planning journey ap l e a s a n texperience.

" A f t e rValentine'sDay, theholidays arethe mostp o p u l a rtime of yearfor couplesto becomee n g a g e d , "s a y sw e d d i n gp l a n n i n ge x p e r tR a y m o n dMiller of MyWe d d i n gRecept ionIdeas.com, al e a d i n go n l i n eresource for brides seeking unique wedding favors,decorations, and gifts. "Many brides-to-be who getengaged over the holidays will begin their planning effortsin the first months of the new year. Knowing where tostart can be overwhelming."

Brides should begin their planning by answering five basicquestions, Miller advises.

1. What is our budget?

"Funding your wedding can be one of the most expensiveundertakings you'll tackle in your life together as a couple," Miller

says. "Many couples only spend more on buying a house or car, or funding theirchildren's college educations." Setting - and sticking to - a budget for yourwedding is an essential step toward starting your married life on a sound financialfooting. Determine where your funding will come from - if your parents can helpor if you'll be paying on your own - and decide how much you can afford tospend without going into debt.

2. What season works?

Virtually as soon as you announce you're engaged, people start asking what thewedding date will be. To make answering that question as simple as possible, startby considering in what season you would like to be married. Would you prefera spring ceremony? Or do you dream of a holiday wedding? By narrowing downthe season, and selecting it well in advance, you'll be able to secure a date thatwill work for everyone.

3. Where do we want to get married and have our reception?

Will you have a destination wedding? Or do you want to keep it local? Whilewedding planning is usually most successful when done well in advance, if you'reinterested in a destination wedding, planning far ahead is essential. Populardestinations book quickly in prime wedding seasons and you may find venues in

the destination of yourchoice are booked a yearor more in advance.

4. What kind of venuedo you want?

Do you dream of a bigchurch wedding? Orsaying your "I do's" in abeautiful natural setting?Perhaps you want yourreception to be in a grandhotel. Knowing the typeof venue you desire willhelp you refine youroptions and choose aspecific location down theroad.

5. Who do you want toofficiate?

Is it important to you to be married by your own church's minister? Or areyou OK with a justice of the peace? Do you fantasize about being joined inmarriage by a ship's captain? Or does your mother have her heart set onseeing you married by the rabbi who was there at your bat mitzvah? Just aspopular venues book quickly, favorite officiants also have their dance cardsfill fast for popular wedding seasons. As soon as you know who you wouldlike to officiate at your wedding, it might pay to approach him or her andfind out about future availability.

"Of course there are many, many things to consider when planning awedding," Miller says. "But these five points are the basics you must addressand everything else about your wedding will be planned around youranswers to these questions. Once you've made these initial decisions, it willbe easier to refine your options and decide exactly what will make yourwedding wonderful, memorable and perfect for you."

Eight tax tips that will save you time andmoney

(ARA) - When all the holiday dust settles, tax time begins for millionsof Americans. Regardless of when you file, follow these tips to makepreparing your 2010 taxes easier.

1. Good record keeping cuts down time spent doing your taxes andmay be required if you receive an Internal Revenue Service notice orare audited. Records should include information that impacts yourfederal tax return, including a copy of last year's return.

2. Don't procrastinate. Rushing encourages errors that can result inlost time and money, and ultimately a rejected return. If you haven'tkept good tax records, you'll likely need extra time to finddocuments.

3. Hundreds of changes are made to federal tax law every year.Dedicating a few minutes to learningabout major changes can save you moneyand time. At minimum, learn about the taxbreaks still available in the AmericanRecovery and Reinvestment Act, includingcredits for energy improvements to yourhome and "green" cars. Start with the IRS'website at www.irs.gov and click on"Individuals." You don't have to be anaccountant to understand theinformation. Do-it-yourself taxpreparation solutions also offer helpfulinformation; the "Tax Information" tab atwww.taxact.com summarizes key changesfor 2010 returns.

4. File and pay on time, or pay late fees andinterest. While state deadlines vary, 2010federal returns are due April 18, 2011, (April 15 is a federal holiday). Can't file by then? File Form 4868 for a six-month filing extension andpay as much as of your taxes as possible by April 18 to minimizeinterest and penalties. If you can't pay all of your tax bill totaling$25,000 or less, apply for a monthly payment agreement via Form9465.

5. Do your taxes online or download tax preparation software, evenif you have a complicated return or have never prepared your taxes."Tax law can be complicated, but doing your own taxes doesn't haveto be," says TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. "The best solutionsgo well beyond completing tax forms and doing the math for you. They're affordable, easy, identify potential tax-saving opportunities, alert you of possible errors and missing data, and provide answers ifyou have questions. They even help you strategize for next year."

6. Do comparison shopping before choosing a tax preparationsolution. Check out the free products. Are there fees for certain formsor to e-file? What help is free and what do you have to pay for? Willit walk you through tax implications of life changes? Can you importdata? Are you guaranteed accuracy and a maximum refund? Can youtry it risk-free? If you're using a paid product, at what point in theprocess do you have to pay?

7. Electronically file. Nearly 70 percent of all federal returns were e-filed last year. Unlike paper filers, you'll receive e-mail confirmation

when the IRS receives and accepts or rejectsyour return, usually within 48 hours of e-filing. You'll need last year's adjusted grossincome or your five-digit self-select e-file PINused last year to e-file. If you're claiming theFirst-time Homebuyer or Adoption Credit, the IRS requires you to mail certaindocumentation with your return.

8. Want your federal refund in as few as eightdays? E-file and select direct deposit. Youcan track your refund status and receiveyour refund at least one week earlier thanthose requesting checks.

More tax tips and information can befound at www.irs.gov. TaxACT Free

Federal Edition allows all taxpayers to prepare, print and e-filean IRS return free and offers free tax help via e-mail atwww.taxact.com.

I met with Massena Mayor James F. Hidy at his office to start getting to know him. We sat

down and talked a little about our lives, and a lot about Massena and his plans to revive

the community and instill a sense of pride & unity in the town. We hit it off really well.

Massena—Wow!—our Mayor is on the ball, making things happen. A full interview will be

conducted with him soon, but for now in just two words to say about him: Positive Energy.

Page 9: Massena News - Issue 5

Isn't Technologygreat, Massena? I lovetechnology!--and Ilove how quickly it'sevolving. But manypeople feartechnology--becauseit’s evolving so

quickly! The purpose of this column is notonly to help educate and entertain but alsoto help dispel the myths driven bytechnology and to help discern thedifference in the drive between hype andauthenticity. We'll focus on technology notas the concept of evil that many fear itrepresents, but as an object that can beused for good in our world, and ultimatelyfor what it is hoped to achieve in our lives.Technology is here to help us, not toconquer us. The remote control spares ustime. Touch-tone phone takes less timethan rotary. Sending email is faster thanpostal. The Blogosphere delivers newsalmost as fast as it’s occurring. The moretechnology evolves, the more free time wehave; and, the more free time we have, themore we do; and the more we do, the morethe reason formore thingsinvented tofree up moretime. Thatcould bea n o t h e rreason whymany feartechnology. That and, ofcourse, the potential for abuse.

Because of human nature, the potential forabuse with technology is huge. Think ofthe Rutgers University student who hadcommitted suicide after discovering thathis sexual encounters were allegedlysecretly taped by two other students andbroadcast live over the Internet last Sept.19. I wonder how many other similarincidents have occurred in the 6 monthssince. Camera-phones have ruined manylives. On the other hand, police brutality isdown. I own a Looxcie (it’s an innovativehands-free Bluetooth earphone/camcorderthat is used for phone conversations andcontinuously recording video, and at thepush of a button on the device, I canupload 30 second video clips straightto YouTube via 3G from almostanywhere). Visit Looxcie.com. It’samazing. Moreover, with a wealth ofinformation at our fingertips, we can getstatistics on just about anything. Yet, thelegitimacy of many sources of informationis often called into question. We don'tknow what/who to believe anymore, especially in terms of political news! Peopletend to put stories on the Blogosphere andsend out chain email that are often wrong. The comments people leave on forumseverywhere oftentimes spread myths,

create confusion, and incite animosity--even hatred. Remember all thoseridiculous conspiracy theories about theSwine Flu shot? Goodness gracious, supposedly, this shot was part of asinister plan by our Government toeradicate the lives of millions ofour own people. Yeah right. Thosetheories were just silly--but myriadpeople believed them! Thankgoodness that Flu didn't escalate, for without the shot, millionswould have perished. Hence, theenemy of our nation isn’t alwayswho we think it is. That being said, people, today’s lesson involvesthree things to consider beforegoing online:

1. DON'T BE GULLIBLE. There areevil people in this world whosesole purpose for existing is topoison your mind. Don't take anythingyou read, see, or hear for granted. Pictures, video, audio, and literature can all bealtered to purport something entirelydifferent than what was originally

recorded. Just because you see aphoto or video of people carryingsigns does not mean that the wordsin those signs were there during theactual recording. Fabrications likethat are sometimes used to stir uphatred and/or to lure people intojoining their cause. Look closely atwhat you see, but also notice whatyou do not see. The truth is often in

what is not being shown, or in what is notbeing said, or in what is not being spelledout for you. Omitting certain pieces of factis a tactic utilized in most successfuldeception campaigns deployed throughmodern day technology the world over.

2. BE CAREFUL. There are myriad scams. Some are to steal your money; others, toinvolve your participation. Something'sjust not right if you're going to be paid alot for little effort--like receiving productand then shipping it elsewhere.Watch out when someonefrom anotherc o u n t r y

a p p e a r sg e n u i n e l y

interested in yourservices/products but tells you

that—for whatever sob story reason--theonly way he can pay you is if you receive

the money someone owes him into youraccount, then keep a portion of it for yourselfand send the rest to his bank account in hiscountry. Next thing you know, every detail

about your life, andevery move you make, isbeing recorded ontoaudio & video, and then, nevertheless, you arearrested for moneylaundering and assistingterrorists—just fordoing somethingstupid. There are myriadlaws, which you have noidea about, involvingtechnology, and if youbreak one, you will bearrested and severelypunished or fined!Ignorance of the law isno excuse. So, be extra

careful of the things in which you participate.Do not participate in cyber-harassment orspreading hatred. Before going on a date withthat hottie you met online, check her ID fordate of birth. Be especially careful what yousay online—it could easily be taken out ofcontext! Keep your criticisms to yourself, because anything you put on the internetsticks around forever. If you damagesomeone's name or reputation online, you willnot be able to deny it. Do not be intoxicatedwhen going online.

3. TRUST NO ONE. Just because your mothersends you email doesn't mean the informationis legit. She might be forwarding email thatwas forwarded to her. She might even besending you a virus! Moreover, just because anemail indicates it's coming from someone youknow doesn't mean it is. Put your mouse over(or double-click) the name of who the email isFrom to see the address of who it's really from,to see who it’s really coming from. Beforeresponding to emails coming from PayPal, oryour bank, etc., carefully examine the sourceof the email address, and the hyperlinkstherein. Just because you seewww.paypal.com doesn't mean that whenyou click it, it's going to open at that location.(No cyber criminal is going to tell you to loginto your paypal account atwww.IamGoingToRobYou.com for instance!)The intent of this article is not to make youparanoid but to remind you to be vigilant at

all times. Not only is Big Brother alwayswatching but also many others. So if your

actions in public might appearquestionable, just stop; else, your spouse,

family & friends will see it on YouTube.

Lastly, there’s a scripture that says it best:“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midstof wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”-- Matthew 10:16

Sweet Simplicity

(Family Features) As much fun as it is to make fancy treats, sometimes simple really is better. This Easter I've decided tokeep things sweet and simple when it comes to makingdesserts.

These Easter Egg Treats are a fun twist on marshmallowcrispy bars - the kids can help shape the eggs and sprinkle them with prettytoppings. It will be a little messy, but what a fun memory to make together!

Bark candies are traditional around other holidays, so why not Easter, too? They couldn't be simpler to make, and the creamy white morsels and colorfuljelly beans taste - and look - great together.

Roller or brush? The applicatormatters for yourDIY paintingproject

(ARA) - In today's tighteconomy, fresheningoutdated homeinteriors can seem likea daunting, budget-

breaking task. The good news is that you don'thave to spend a lot to remove eyesores such asunattractive paneling, too-dark cabinets or thatnot-so-charming "retro" fireplace mantel andsurround.

Instead of living with these design disasters fromanother era, there's an easy and inexpensive fix -paint. Quality interior coatings, applied with theproper applicators, can go a long way in givingthose design debacles a quick and easy faceliftfor hundreds of dollars less than a full-scalerenovation.

But before you start your paint project, it'simportant to know the key to success is selectingnot only a quality coating, but applying it with aquality painting applicator. If an inferiorapplicator is used, even the most outstandingpaint may not provide the smooth finish you

desire. Using superior applicators can streamline avariety of interior painting projects, saving you timeand money, and ultimately helping you achieve afabulous end result.

"Paint has long been considered one of the greatbudget boosters for decorating projects," says AndrewMarsden, product manager for Purdy applicators."When you combine a first-rate paint with a qualitypainting applicator, you can transform a variety ofsurfaces - from outdated cabinetry to knotty pinepaneling - giving any room in the house a fresh look."

When to use a mini rollerPremium applicators come in a number of shapes andsizes; however one of today's most popular choices isthe mini roller. Purdy has a variety of innovative miniroller choices that are versatile, lightweight, canquickly and easily deliver a perfect finish with smoothrolling action and have the ability to reachtight spaces. These combined featuresmake them the ideal applicator for anendless number of projects, from paintingwalls, doors and cabinets, to freshening uptables, chairs and even bedroom furniture.

When to use a brushEven with all the advantages the mini rolleroffers, a paint brush is still the hero for most projectsespecially when trim work is needed. A quality brushis a must when you're aiming to end up with aprofessional-looking appearance. Most consumersmight not know it's also important to use a brush

that's the appropriate size for yourpainting project. So, be certain to keepthese tips in mind:

* Use 1- and 2-inch brushes for trim work,touch-ups and smaller projects such aswindow frames and moldings. Angular 1-and 2-inch brushes are great for paintingaround windows.

* Choose brushes measuring 2 1/2 and 3inches for medium-size surfaces such ascabinets, baseboards, doors or steps.

* Paint larger surfaces, like walls, ceilings, and floors with brushes ranging in sizefrom 3 1/2 inches to 6 inches.

"Whether you're using a brush or miniroller, the rightapplicator can make orbreak any paintingproject," Marsden says."By paying as muchattention to the sizeand quality ofapplicator used, inaddition to the paint,

you're guaranteed to end up with afantastic finished project that you'll beable to admire and enjoy for years tocome."
