Helping Students Succeed in MAT1033
COMMON PRACTICES
0 Initial Assessment during the first week of class.
0 Additional Online Support consists of online monitored assignments and pre- test review sessions.
0 Learning assistants and math lab support.
DEFINITIONS
0 The initial assessment is a short instrument designed to assess the student’s potential to succeed in MAT1033. It will be administered during the first week of class thus allowing students the opportunity to switch to a dev. math course.
0 Additional support consists of monitored periodic online assignments and pre-test review sessions run by the assigned Learning Assistant.
DEFINITIONS
0 Learning Assistants are lab personnel and other academic support personnel that will be assigned to sections, coordinate review sessions for faculty to whom they are assigned, and support students in the academic labs.
COMMUNICATION PLAN
0 Flyers and other printed announcements in labs and academic areas.
0 Use of LA’s to visit classrooms during the first week of classes and before exams. These visits will be brief and coordinated by the instructor of record, and their purpose will be simply to remind students of the LA’s schedule, as well as lab hours.
0 Instructor announcements via their academic management systems.
0 Language in the syllabus will include additional support Information; an example of this language is as follows:
COMMON LANGUAGEOn Campus Support: In order to better assist you to succeed in this course, the campus has academic support labs where you may meet with tutors and receive additional assistance with your course work. In addition, your section has been assigned a Learning Assistant who will conduct review sessions before exams and assist you during the semester. He/she will be visiting your classroom in the first weeks of class to provide more information.
