Matchprint Color Proofing System Overview
?do you your proofing systemtrustA Long Tradition of Color Proofing
Matchprint color proofs are part of a long
history of color proofing that began with the
introduction of Color-Key Overlay Proofing Films by
3M in 1960. When trade shops and their customers
wanted an even better proof, Transfer-Key Proofing
was introduced in 1969. This technology grew and
was modified to become the Matchprint Proofing System
in 1980. Today, the Matchprint system offers six different
color sets to accurately match most printing conditions
and ink colors. The Matchprint system grew
again recently to include Matchprint Plus
for simulating PANTONE® and other specialty colors.
When industry professionals think of graphic arts color
proofing, they think of Matchprint color proofs.
36760 Analog Brochure V3.qxd 7/10/01 1:48 PM Page 3
Only the Matchprint proofingsystem gives you a choice of base materials to bettersimulate your printing applications, transfer sheetsthat let you view your proofson your own stock, anddeglossing sheets that let youachieve the matte finishedlook of low-gloss press sheets.
A Midwest printer was experiencing inconsistent color. As a
result, the company was doing more and more remakes, leading
to reduced profits and lost customer confidence. This pattern
changed dramatically when they turned to the Matchprint
Proofing System. No system on the market provides
the adaptability, flexibility and consistency of the
Matchprint Proofing System. Matchprint proofing
offers the widest variety of color sets designed to meet the
specific needs of different printing processes.
All printing applications have distinct standards for color
reproduction. That’s why the Matchprint system offers
color proofing films designed to simulate the higher dot gain
of standard web offset printing films, the lower dot gain of
commercial publications, and the even lower dot gains possible
with recent advances in newer presses.

MatchprintNegative Proofing Films
CLASSIC SWOP®
Our original and still highly popular color set, Classic
SWOP® matches densities and inks of web printing
with 22% to 26% dot gain* on publication base.
SWOP® Lo-Gain
The SWOP® Lo-Gain color set accurately predicts
the printing conditions of new web offset presses
with 18% to 20% dot gain with similar hues and
densities as Classic SWOP®. This color set is used
to produce a SWOP® Certified Proof when made on
Matchprint Publication Base and in accordance
with its SWOP® Application Data Sheet.
Commercial
The Commercial color set, with a dot gain of 21%
to 25% on Matchprint Commercial Base,
is designed to proof the brighter, cleaner inks
and higher densities typically used on commercial
sheet-fed presses.
Commercial Lo-Gain
The Commercial Lo-Gain color set uses
the same brighter and cleaner
commercial ink colors with higher
densities, but with slightly lower
dot gain of 18% to 22% often found
on newer sheet-fed offset presses.
Hi Res
The Hi Res color set, an extension of the commercial
color set, is ideal for commercial printers who
are printing 175 and higher line screens or using
stochastic screening.
Hi-Fi
Designed to proof PANTONE Hexachrome® colors, this
color set includes a unique CMYK plus Green and
Orange that expands the color gamut producing color
that cannot be produced using standard CMYK.
MatchprintPositive Proofing Films**
SWOP® and SWOP® Lo-Gain
Colors can be intermixed to proof a higher gain SWOP®
proof or a SWOP® Certified Proof when made in
accordance with its SWOP® Application Data Sheet.
Euro Colors
Matchprint positive Euro Colors proofing films
produce a high, medium or low gain proof with colors
matched to inks typically used in Europe and other
countries outside of North America.
Bases
Matchprint bases range from SuperWhite,
which simulates #1 Premium white paper through
Newsprint base and includes Commercial, Commercial
Low-Gain and Publication Bases. Each simulates a
commonly used group of printing papers. All
Matchprint bases provide size stability that ensure
that proofs will always fit and be in register.
Degloss
The Matchprint Deglossing sheet gives the
proof a matte finish when a lower gloss level is desired.
The Matchprint Transfer
System allows an
Matchprint proof to be made on
most printing stocks, and provides
the same high level of fit and
register as you find using
Matchprint Base. This creates
a proof that has the look and feel
of the printed piece.
*The dot gains listed for each color set are based on typical printing conditions with yellow having the lower dot gain, magenta and cyan having similar dot gains, and black having the highest dot gain.
**Matchprint positive proofing film works with the same laminators and processors as negative proofing products.

A California printer of labels needed to match its clients’ unique food
packaging colors on a regular basis. Not long ago, this kind of request
would have been impossible to fulfill since this shop’s previous proofing
system only offered six custom colors and was not capable of accurately
proofing the PANTONE colors specified. Now, with their Matchprint
proofing system, they can easily match exact color specifications the first
time around and every time after. In addition, the Matchprint
Plus System gave them the unique ability to add custom colors with the
accuracy and reliability printers expect from Matchprint
Proofing Systems. It’s what being the worldwide leader in color proofing
means - flexibility to meet every customer’s color needs.
With the Matchprint PlusSystem, you have the quality and accuracy of an Matchprint ColorProof with the ability to add any fifthand sixth color or more. The Matchprint Plus System allows you to coatyour customer’s own special orcustom colors to show precisely thecolor that will be printed. The Matchprint Plus System gives Matchprint Proofing System usersone more distinct color advantage.

Custom Colors andMatchprint Plus System
When it comes to proofing spot or special colors,
Imation offers the largest number of pre-coated custom
color films for use with Matchprint positive
and negative proofing systems. If it’s PANTONE Colors
or other special colors you need to proof, then
Matchprint Plus is the answer. Matchprint
Plus allows you to custom mix and proof most any color
you want. It can also be used to proof a fifth color
along with any of our CMYK color sets or to build a
multi-color proof using only the Matchprint
Plus System. Because Matchprint Plus
proofs are built on stable Matchprint base or
Negative Receptor, and use a “laminate first” process,
proofs of any size have excellent fit and register. The
compact Matchprint Plus Coater is the only
additional piece of equipment required to produce
proofs with PANTONE and other special colors from
as small as a single page to 30" x 42".
Color-Key Negative Overlay Proofing System
Color-Key films hold a premier position in overlay
proofing, providing outstanding flexibility and accurate
simulation of your printed piece. Superior economy and
time-efficiency make Color-Key proofs the ideal
method for checking fit, registration and color breaks.
Color-Key overlay proofs are the perfect choice to show
two-color work. They can also show fifth and sixth
colors when the overlays are attached to a four-color
Matchprint proof.
Hexachrome® Proofing
With more and more special colors being used in
today’s commercial and packaging printing, and
the desire to enhance detail in process work, the
Hexachrome six-color process system developed by
Pantone, Inc. is ideal. Hexachrome color system adds
green and orange to modified CMYK colors to produce
over 90% of the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM® Colors.
When it comes to proofing Hexachrome jobs, Imation
offers the Matchprint Hi-Fi color set that
accurately simulates the CMYK, Green and Orange of
Hexachrome. Using Matchprint SuperWhite
base will simulate Hexachrome on a premium #1 paper.

A small but ambitious printer always liked to “think big” and
regularly did a number of jobs that required large format proofs.
They continuously had problems with fit and register, which
resulted in excess remakes, customer rejections and shrinking
profits. After discovering the precision of the Matchprint
Proofing System, they were able to make a big problem shrink
to nothing. Matchprint proofing system provides
excellent fit and register in all sizes due to stable base materials
and transfer negative receptor sheets, as well as the “laminate
first” workflow. Imation precision has a direct influence on your
customers’ satisfaction and your bottom line. Other systems can
have difficulty with fit and register for larger proofs, are unusable
for scatter proofing, may be difficult to use, and often require
re-calibration. You’ll see precise fit and register each
time, allowing you to meet deadlines and stay on budget.

Why Laminate First?
The Matchprint Proofing System achieves superior
results due to its unique “Laminate First” workflow.
Each color of an Matchprint proof is made in
three easy steps: Laminate, Expose and Process.
A complete Matchprint proof is composed
of four or more color layers laminated to a sheet
of Matchprint base material or transferred
to another stock.
Laminate
By laminating first on a stable
base, the Matchprint System
eliminates the stretch or slip
that is common with competitive
“Laminate Last” systems.
By laminating before imaging,
you achieve precise fit and
register, which in turn means
an accurate color proof.
Expose
Exposure after laminating
provides proper fit and register
on proofs as large as 30" x 80".
This makes the Matchprint
Proofing System well-suited
for scatter proofing.
Process
Film is developed and ready
for the next layer of laminate.
How a Matchprint Proof is Made
36760 Analog Brochure V3.qxd 7/10/01 1:51 PM Page 9
Excessive remakes and customer refusal of proofs were frustrating the owner of
a large printing house in Chicago. These ongoing problems with consistency and
dependability resulted in lost productivity, material waste, and less than satisfied
customers. After identifying where these problems were occurring in the process,
we improved this company’s efficiency and consistency by incorporating
Matchprint proofs, the industry-standard contract proof.
Since their introduction in 1980, Matchprint color proofing systems have
earned widespread recognition for their reliability and exceptional performance.
These systems have gained the printing industry’s trust because they:
• Have great consistency from proof to proof, operator to operator,
and plant to plant due to our precision coating technology
• Offer the widest variety of color film sets and base choices to better match
ink hue and dot gain characteristics of specific printing applications
• Assure pinpoint accuracy in registration
• Accommodate most any proofing need with sizes from
10" x 12" to 30" x 80".
The printing industry has put its confidence in theMatchprint Color ProofingSystem. A true contract proof, an Matchprint proofaccurately and consistently simulates printing press results. And Matchprint proofingoffers the widest variety of colorsets designed to meet the specificneeds of different printingprocesses.
