Muth Family Learning CenterGet Organized For Success

“The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.” - Frank Herbert, author

As spring semester exams loom, expressions like, ‘I’m lost,’ ‘I haven’t learned a thing this semester’, or ‘big exams are too hard’, etc. echo across campus. It is very rare to hear, ‘I love to study’, ‘I am organized for exams’, or ‘I understand what I am supposed to do’.

The reality of getting ready for exams takes the willingness to face fears and confusions. Students can meet with their teachers to ask how to best prepare for exams. Students can set aside 30 minutes a day to get notes organized for study. Families can make exam study a carpool and/or a dinner table discussion or game.

Students who use the Learning Center say that organizing class study groups is really helpful, especially before big tests. AAP teacher tutoring on campus (free) is a great way to set aside time for study. Creating one’s own exam before in-depth study time can aid focus and memory. Most of the time student-made exams are more difficult than those of their teachers. To succeed and not just get by or hope for the best takes asking questions and being positive about the task at hand. Don’t wait until the last minute, eat and sleep well, find times to laugh and get started with studying. Summertime is your reward for a job well-done.

Invest in your personal growth. Come discover all that the Muth Family Learning Center has to offer you. For more information or to discuss your student’s needs, contact Marilyn Wilson, Director at [email protected] or JoAnn McCune, Learning Specialist at [email protected] or call (714) 641-3694.

2010 Summer School Information Summer School DatesMonday, June 28 - Friday, July 30

Freshmen Summer School OrientationThursday, June 24 at 5:30 PM in the LeVecke Center

Juniors (soon-to-be-seniors), now it’s your turn! Read about different universities, visit schools, request information and applications, and get excited about college. The important thing is that you do something, because the clock is ticking and the more time you take to prep now, the happier you’ll be in the fall. You should already have your list of 7-8 schools you’ll be applying to and be working on your applications and essays this summer, so if you still aren’t sure where you are going to apply, see Ms. Castro for help developing your list.

Juniors can schedule a one-on-one meeting with Ms. Castro and their parents after attending a College Admissions workshop. Students (not parents) must be the ones to schedule the appointment in person, because they will be given some assignments to do before the meeting. Workshop dates are on the College and Career Planning calendar at www.materdei.org/ccrc.

Freshmen & Sophomores, it’s not too early to start preparing for the future. Summer is a great time to begin learning about and visiting different colleges and types of schools. Taking a trip to Boston, San Francisco, Toronto, or Miami to visit relatives? Add a day or two to your trip and visit some colleges while you are there. If you’re not sure what schools to see, what you should be looking for or whom you should be talking to when you are there, please see Ms. Castro for suggestions.

College and Career Center Website Be sure to visit the CCRC website for a more detailed list of “Things to Do this month”. Check out our College and Career Planning website at www.materdei.org/ccrc for more information on scholarships, financial aid, and other college search websites. You may also contact Ms. Castro in the College and Career Center at [email protected] or (714) 850-9561.

Students of the Month

Sean MartinezKarina Martin

Karina Martin, Student of the Month for June, has excelled in many areas during her years as a Monarch. A member of the Academic Decathlon Team since sophomore year and Team Leader since her junior year, Karina counts her experience with that program as one of her favorite memories of Mater Dei.

“My fondest memories are all from my experiences with Academic Decathlon. There are too many to list, but one particular memory is from my 11th grade Academic Decathlon Study Retreat. Each year the whole team spends a weekend studying in a suite by South Coast Plaza. At this particular retreat, my friend and I curled up together in the bathtub with pillows. We spent hours studying in thebathtub. Not only was our secret study spot quiet, but it was also extremely comfortable!”

Carrying a 3.95 GPA, Karina has challenged herself in the following Honors and AP classes: Honors English I & II, AP English IV, Honors Spanish I-III and AP Spanish Literature. Her hard work in the classroom has earned her membership in CSF and Renaissance. She was also selected as a National Hispanic Scholar and a scholarship winner for the City of Santa Ana’s Greater Business Alliance “Seniors in the Spotlight.”

Faith and community is important to Karina. She is a lifelong parishioner at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange where she was confirmed and volunteers at their annual Fiesta. At Mater Dei, Karina is an active member of Campus Ministry and served as a Eucharistic Minister this year.

Karina was proud to be involved in Mater Dei’s Special Games this year as a clown. She says, “I was able to interact with so many wonderful athletes. My main job was to spread smiles and happiness, and that was the best experience ever!”

Karina has given back to Mater Dei through her assistance in the annual “phone-a-thon” during her sophomore year and has also volunteered over 50 hours of service at the Discovery Science Center.

With college only a few months away, she reflects back on her years at Mater Dei. “My MD experience has been full of love, learning, and friendship. My advice for students is to become involved! It’s the best way to make lifelong friends.”

Karina was accepted to Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, Chapman University, Loyola Marymount University, Sonoma State University, Westminster College (Utah), UC Riverside, and UC Irvine. She will attend UC Irvine in the fall.

A lover of the outdoors, Karina enjoys fishing, hiking and hunting with her family and two dogs. She has had her hunting license since she was 12.

Sean Martinez, Student of the Month for June, has balanced his academics while excelling as an athlete here at MD and in the community. Carrying a 3.83 GPA, he has taken Honors English I, AP European History, AP U.S. History and AP Government. His accomplishments in the classroom have earned him membership in CSF and Renaissance.

Sean was a member of the Boys Volleyball program during his freshman and sophomore years. However, his true passion is rowing and he is a four-year member of the Men’s Junior Rowing Program at the Newport Aquatic Center. In June 2009, Sean’s rowing team won the US Rowing Men’s National Championship.

In giving back to the community, Sean has shared his love of the sport with novice rowers by coaching them in the summer – something he says is among his favorite activities. He has also volunteered at the Catholic Worker hours in Santa Ana and the Midnight Mission in Los Angeles.

Each February, the Office of Advancement & Alumni hosts Career Day. Nearly 30 Mater Dei Alumni come back to campus to share their career experience with the junior class. The day also features a session with a human resources expert who shares tips and best practices for crafting a winning resume and cover letter. Sean says his favorite Mater Dei memory was his participation in Career Day 2009 which led him to want to pursue a career in real estate. In creating a foundation for his future career, Sean will study Business Administration at Santa Clara University in the fall.

As he looks back on his years at Mater Dei, he advises incoming students to get involved. “My freshman year was scary for me because I didn’t know many people. Clubs, volleyball and rowing helped me to find friends at school. I made more friends throughout my time at MD simply by getting involved and being friendly.”

Sean is a graduate of St. Joseph School in Long Beach and is a member of St. Joseph and St. Bartholomew Parishes. He resides in Long Beach with his parents Frank and Teri (a substitute nurse at Mater Dei) and sister Catie ’11.

2010 ATHLETIC SUMMER CAMPSAll athletic programs at Mater Dei High School will be offering a summer camp. The athletic summer camps are a great way to meet the coaches and returning players while becoming more familiar with Mater Dei’s campus and facilities.

Incoming freshman find them helpful in making new friends before classes begin in the fall. Youth camps offer younger children the opportunity to begin exploring all that Mater Dei has to offer. For more camp information including dates, times, fees, location, age level for camps and contact information, please visit www.materdei.org/athletics.
