Math 1065: College Algebra

Instructor: Office: Office Hours:

Email: Day & Time Class Meets:Class Location:

Prerequisite: A score of 570 or better on the math section of the SAT OR a score of 20 or better on the math section of the ACT OR a score of 90 or better on the Accuplacer placement test OR successful completion of MATH 0001/0045.

Students who have completed the General Education Mathematics requirements can:

1. Correctly use/interpret mathematical notation and terminology to solve problems2. Apply general concepts and principles of mathematics to solve various kinds of problems (e.g. use general formulas, recognize general patterns in a collection of problems, apply rules of logic in the process of problem solving).3. Model/solve problems related to applications that describe various phenomena in nature and society.

Required Materials

It is your responsibility to purchase an access code that

is good through final examinations. If your

account expires before all work is completed, then you

will receive 0’s for all missed work and will not be

permitted to make it up.

ALEKS 360 Access Code for College Algebra, Miller, Gerken 2nd Edition (18 week access needed)

After your first class meeting, you will need to go to the CAVE.In the CAVE you will register for ALEKS and complete your initial

knowledge check (see videos posted on Blackboard for more information about knowledge checks).

It is very important that you bring the following items with you to the CAVE: ECU 1Card, a printed copy of your class schedule from Banner, your Math 1065 Spring 2018 Course Pack, ALKES 360 Access Code, a NON-graphing calculator, blank paper, and something to write with.

It is your responsibility to confirm that you are registering for the correct ALEKS course during the registration process. If you register for the incorrect course, then you must immediately notify the CAVE instructor on duty to be moved to the correct course. Please note that grades do NOT transfer from one ALEKS course to another and the initial knowledge will have to be retaken.

The CAVE will have a list of Financial Aid ALEKS 360 Access Codes that will give you temporary access to ALEKS for a two-week period. Once this code expires, you will be locked out of your ALEKS account until you purchase a regular Student Access Code from Dowdy. The Financial Aid Access Code does not add an additional two weeks to your account.

Page 5: Math 1065: College Algebrablog.ecu.edu/sites/math1065/files/2018/01/Part-II-CP.docx · Web viewQuiz 6 Test 3 Registration Apr 11 Test 3 Registration Apr 12 Test 3 Registration Apr

A Math 1065 Spring 2018 College Algebra Course Pack is required and should be brought to every class. It should be purchased from the Dowdy Student Store. Your instructor will check that you have brought your ENTIRE course pack to EVERY class.

4 Big blue/green books (8.5” by 11”, 8 leaves of paper)- can be purchased at Dowdy Student Stores Non-graphing scientific calculator- I suggest a TI-30XS Multiview Calculator (it’s affordable and easy

to use). Please bring your non-graphing scientific calculator to every class as well as to the CAVE. Headphones or earbuds- please bring these with you to the CAVE regularly.

Email Communication Email communication with your instructor from anywhere other than your ECU official account will not

be given any consideration and will be discarded. Expect faculty to respond to emails between 9am and 5pm on Monday through Friday with a

forty-eight hour lag time. Your instructor can not resolve technical issues. If you need technical assistance, contact

McGrawHill student technical support at 1.714.619.7090 or  https://www.aleks.com/support/form.

Class Attendance Attendance is mandatory on the first day of class . If you do not attend the full lecture and sign the

roll sheet, then you will automatically be dropped from the course. Once you are dropped for missing the first day of class, then you cannot be added back into Math 1065 for the Spring 2018 semester.

Class meets once a week for 50 minutes at the scheduled time (check your student schedule on Banner for this information).

Class participation is extremely important to your success in Math 1065. During class it is expected that you will:

o Attend for the FULL 50 minuteso Take notes, pay attention, and stay awake throughout the entire class timeo Participate (ask questions & answer questions)o All cell phones, laptops, and any other electronic devices must be turned off and put away (out of

sight)o If you fail to meet ANY of the above requirements, then you will not receive credit for attending

class and will receive a 0% for class participation. o If you are caught completing NON-1065 course work during class time, then you might be asked

to leave the classroom and you will receive a 0% for class participation. Only students with a documented university excuse, issued by the Dean of Students Office, can have a

class absence excused. You have 1 week from the class absence to provide your instructor with this documentation. NOTE: A letter from Student Health does NOT qualify as a university excuse for this course.

Illness is not a University Approved Excuse and missing a class due to illness will result in a 0% for class participation.

If you have perfect attendance, according to my records, you will receive 5 points added to your Class Participation average at the end of the semester. A university excused absence, issued by the Dean of Students Office, will not affect your attendance if given to your instructor within 1 week of the missed class.

CAVE Attendance The CAVE is a free drop in tutorial lab where 1065 students can receive individualized help. The CAVE

is located in the basement of Joyner Library. Below are the hours of operation for the CAVE for the Spring 2018 semester:

o Monday 9am-9pmo Tuesday 9am-9pm

Page 6: Math 1065: College Algebrablog.ecu.edu/sites/math1065/files/2018/01/Part-II-CP.docx · Web viewQuiz 6 Test 3 Registration Apr 11 Test 3 Registration Apr 12 Test 3 Registration Apr

o Wednesday 9am-1pm & 3pm-9pmo Thursday 11am-9pmo Friday 9am-5pm

To gain entry to the CAVE you must have your ECU 1Card (or photo ID with Banner #) AND your Math 1065 Spring 2018 College Algebra Course Pack. If you do not have one or both of these items, then you will NOT be permitted to enter to the CAVE.

When you enter and leave the CAVE, you will present your ECU 1Card and Spring 2018 Math 1065 Course Pack to the desk assistant and he/she will swipe your card so that your time in the CAVE may be recorded for each visit. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are signed in when you enter and signed out when you leave. (If you need to use the restroom, you will have to sign out.)

The desk assistant can only give you time per a visit . Therefore it is your responsibility to keep track of the total time you spend in the CAVE each week.

Each week you will be required to spend a minimum of 3 hours in the CAVE. Please note that 2 hours and 59 minutes is not equal to 3 hours and will result in a 0% for CAVE attendance.

CAVE hours do NOT roll over from week to week. In general, your CAVE week starts at 9am on the day your class meets and ends at 9pm on the night

before your next class meeting. You should refer to your CAVE Time Sheet, located at the front of your course pack, for the specific dates and minimum hour requirements for each week.

You are allowed to do only your Math 1065 work or your math-related activities while you are in the CAVE. The penalty for violating this rule will be you are asked to leave the CAVE and you will receive a zero for CAVE hours that week even if all required hours have been completed.

No cell phones in the CAVE. If we see or hear your cell phone, then you will be asked to leave the CAVE and you will receive a zero for CAVE hours that week.

Students may only use NON-graphing calculators while in the CAVE . Graphing calculators, cell phone calculator, ipod calculator, ipad calculator, etc. may not be used. If you forget your non-graphing calculator, then you may check one out with a photo ID.

No food, drinks, gum, candy, tobacco products, or weapons are allowed in the CAVE. Bottled water is permitted, but it must be in a bottle with a screw on cap.

The CAVE is closed on holidays, school breaks, and when ECU cancels classes . See the first page in your course pack for other scheduled CAVE closures.

A CAVE absence (missing an entire week in the CAVE) will NOT be excused, however it can be made up (in a timely manner) ONLY if a student has a documented university excuse issued by the Dean of Students Office excusing them from the entire week. Note: A letter from Student Health does not qualify as a university excuse.

You have 1 week from the class absence to provide your instructor with this documentation. NOTE: A letter from Student Health does NOT qualify as a university excuse for this course.

Illness is not a University Approved Excuse and missing an entire week in the CAVE due to illness will result in a 0% for CAVE attendance.

ALEKS ALEKS is an adaptive online learning system. Immediately after attending your first day of class you

will need to go to the CAVE to get registered for ALEKS and complete the Initial Knowledge Check. The Initial Knowledge check must be completed in the CAVE. After its completion, you will be

given a personalized learning plan based on your performance on that assessment. This learning plan gives you credit for what you already know and shows you what you are ready to learn. Throughout the semester you will work through ALEKS, mastering knowledge of the topics necessary for success in College Algebra.

After your Initial Knowledge check, your instructor may recommend that you drop Math 1065 and take the prerequisite course Math 0001/0045. Completing Math 0001/0045 will give you a better foundation of the prerequisite topics and increase your chance at success in Math 1065.

Page 7: Math 1065: College Algebrablog.ecu.edu/sites/math1065/files/2018/01/Part-II-CP.docx · Web viewQuiz 6 Test 3 Registration Apr 11 Test 3 Registration Apr 12 Test 3 Registration Apr

ALEKS will periodically check your knowledge retention (approximately every 20 topics learned AND 5 hours spent in ALEKS).

Your instructor or the CAVE Director reserves the right to assign a random proctored knowledge check at any time throughout the semester. Failure to complete a random proctored knowledge check will result in your ALEKS account being locked until the proctored knowledge check is completed. If you miss assignments due to your account being locked, no extensions or makeup assignments will be granted.

It is your responsibility to purchase an access code that is good through final examinations. If your account expires before all work is completed, then you will receive 0’s for all missed work and will not be permitted to make it up.

Homework Homework will consist of weekly modules completed online in ALEKS. All homework assignments are due at 11:59pm on their due dates. Please refer to your course calendar

for each homework assignment’s due date. You should expect to spend several hours each week working on your math in ALEKS. The time

necessary will vary each week. It is recommended that you spend at least 1-2 hours each day in ALEKS.

Extensions will be given on a homework assignment ONLY if a student has a documented university excuse issued by the Dean of Students Office excusing them from ALL dates the assignment was open. The university approved excuse must be presented to Mrs. Talbert ([email protected]) within one week of the issue date or no make-up assignment will be granted.

Note: A letter from Student Health does not qualify as a university excuse. Illness is not a University Approved Excuse and missing a homework assignment due to illness will

result in a 0% for that homework assignment. I will drop 3 homework assignments at the end of the semester.

Scheduled Knowledge Checks There will be scheduled knowledge checks during the semester (refer to your course calendar for

the specific dates). These knowledge checks must be completed in the CAVE on their assigned date. While taking a scheduled knowledge check you may use the following authorized materials:

o Blank loose leaf papero NON-graphing calculatoro Writing utensil (pencil, pen, colored pencils/pens, highlighters)

Any student caught with unauthorized materials during a knowledge check will face penalties. The first offense will result in a 0% for the knowledge check that the unauthorized material(s) was accessed/used on. The second offense will result in a 0% on ALL knowledge checks and an academic integrity violation reported to ECU. The third offense will result in an F as your final course grade in Math 1065 and an academic integrity violation reported to ECU.

Cell phones are not permitted in the CAVE during knowledge checks. Cell phones are considered unauthorized material. If a student’s cell phone is seen or heard during a knowledge check, then it will be treated as accessing unauthorized materials during a knowledge check (NO EXCEPTIONS). See above penalty for accessing unauthorized material during a knowledge check.

You may not give nor receive help while you are taking a knowledge check (treated as cheating under ECU’s Academic Integrity clause.

Scheduled knowledge checks are graded. Your grade is based on the percent of topics you show mastery of out of the percent of topics that should be mastered at that point in the semester (Goal Percent). For examples, if you show mastery of 20% on Knowledge Check 1, then your grade for Knowledge Check 1 will be (20/25)*100= 80.

o Knowledge Check 1: goal of 25%o Knowledge Check 2: goal of 42%

Page 8: Math 1065: College Algebrablog.ecu.edu/sites/math1065/files/2018/01/Part-II-CP.docx · Web viewQuiz 6 Test 3 Registration Apr 11 Test 3 Registration Apr 12 Test 3 Registration Apr

For each test you will be assigned to a particular workstation. Once a student is seated for a test, he or she is not permitted to move from that location for the duration of the test. The test must be submitted prior to leaving the CAVE.

In extreme situations (power failure, server failure, forced evacuation of building) should a testing session be interrupted, student test work will automatically be saved, so that when power or reconnection is re-established the student may again log into their test and resume work for the remainder of their time. If a testing session is interrupted for some other reason, it is likely that the student will be advised by a test proctor to X out of their test (by clicking on the upper right corner X of their browser); the student in this case should not click the Submit button for their test because then the student will not be permitted to re-start and finish their test. For whatever reason the testing session is interrupted, the test may resume soon thereafter or at a later time. Students will be advised by the test proctor whether they should wait in their seats until the test can be re-started, or whether they should submit their names and then leave the CAVE to return at a later time.

Only 1 attempt is allowed for each test (NO EXCEPTIONS). All tests are comprehensive.

Practice Tests A practice test will be assigned prior to each of the three tests. You should take the practice test many times in a test setting, using only blank paper, a non-graphing

calculator, and something to write with, in order to prepare for the actual test. You may take the practice test as many times as you would like before their due dates. Please refer to

your course calendar for each practice test’s due date. Practice Tests do not count towards your course average. A printed copy of each practice test can be found in your course pack.

Scheduling a Test Each student is required to schedule a date and time to take each test during each tests’ registration

period. To register for a test, you need to go to the CAVE and ask a CAVE employee for assistance. If there is an issue during the registration process, then you must immediately notify the instructor on

duty in the CAVE . Do NOT email your instructor about test registration issues. Any email about test registration issues

will be disregarded. Test registration dates:

Test 1: January 29th (9 AM) – February 2nd (5 PM) Test 2: March 12th (9 AM) – March 16th (5 PM) Test 3: April 9th (9 AM) – April 13th (5 PM)

Upon completion of the test reservation process, you will need to print your test reservation details: go to home screen of Open Test, click on settings icon (looks like a gear), choose download reservation details, a new window will open up so make sure your pop-up blocker has been disabled, open your test reservation details, and print. You will need to keep your printed test reservation details as it will be needed to gain entry to the CAVE on test days.

Excuse or the grade of 0% will be submitted for the test. A letter from Student Health is not considered a University Approved Excuse for this course. Illness is

not a University Approved Excuse and missing a test due to being sick will result in a 0% for the test.

Your final exam score will replace your lowest test score if it is higher. You should save this replacement in case of a situation that is not considered a University Approved Excuse such as illness.

A Guide for Success in Math 1065

1. Always come to each class prepared and participate.2. Always complete your minimum CAVE hour requirement each week. Some students will need extra

support to succeed in this course. Therefore, you may need to complete more than the minimum number of hours in the CAVE to master the course topics.

3. You should not complete all 3 CAVE hours in one visit. It is recommended that you spread out your CAVE hours into 30 minute – 1 hour visits.

4. Start assignments early and do not wait until deadlines are near to begin working on assignments5. You should expect to spend several hours each week working on your assignments in ALEKS. It is

recommended that you spend a minimum of 1-2 hours each day in ALEKS to learn all the required topics.

6. Ask for help! If you are struggling with a problem in ALEKS ask a CAVE tutor for help or schedule some one on one tutoring with the Pirate Academic Success Center.

7. Follow the below guidelines on how best to prepare for tests and the final exam.8. Keep a positive attitude about your ability to succeed!

How to Best Prepare for Tests and the Final Exam

1. You should prepare for tests, as well as the final exam, by working and then reworking the corresponding practice tests in ALEKS.

2. You should begin working on a practice test as soon as it is available in ALEKS.3. When working on a practice test, you should take it in a test setting using only blank paper, a non-

graphing calculator, and something to write with. 4. It is recommended that you follow the following process when preparing for a test: take practice test in a

test setting, go to CAVE and ask a CAVE tutor to review up to 5 problems you missed, take practice again in a test setting, go to the CAVE and ask a CAVE tutor to review up to 5 problems you missed, … continue this process until you can do well (70% or higher) on two attempts in a row (in a test setting).

5. If you can do well (70% or higher) on two attempts in a row (in a test setting), then you should be ready for your actual test.

6. Get a good night’s rest the night before a test.7. Keep a positive attitude about your ability to succeed!
