Mrs. McGeeFOR ALL OF MY MATH CLASSES:
Hello everyone! I hope the Easter Bunny made it to your house! I am thinking out of the box for this week’s enrichment activity. You know that age old question, “WHEN WILL WE EVER USE THIS?” Well that’s what I want you to look at this week. I want you to think of a CAREER that you are interested in and explore how math is used in that field! I would like to see what you find! Here are some ways you could do that, you can
Write me and tell me what you found do what I did in my example and put interesting links in a word document make a video come up with any other creative options… or just take some time and investigate
My example: You know I am a water person (aka Dory) so if I had a 2nd chance to pick a dream job I would work with dolphins!! That means I would have to go to school to be a marine biologist. I have been on many dolphin/whale watches over my life and they have been incredible! I even had a chance to swim with dolphins! The best adventure ever was in Hawaii where we saw spinner dolphins, they are amazing! Check out my first link and see how they jump and spin out of the water!!! You really need to see how cool they are, really watch it! The rest if my links are things that I have found about math in the marine biology field and some things about dolphin’s intelligence. Check them all out and then start looking for a career you could see yourself doing …
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDpyBSb-aJQ
WATCH THIS even if you don’t do anything else!! Why do spinner dolphins spin? An awesome video to get you excited about dolphins! We saw about 100 of these dolphins in Hawaii!!
https://education.seattlepi.com/type-math-used-marine-biology-6785.html
This is a word document that talks about needing algebra, trigonometry, calculus and statistics to be a marine biologist!
https://www.reference.com/science/marine-biologists-use-math-work-6bb1c5f5a42c2cb1
54
How do marine biologists use math in their work? A short word document.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMGH9Ohk11g
Why is math important in marine biology? A video of a teacher giving some practical examples.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A226SlCQQsA
Dolphin Research Center - Dolphins Can do Math!
This is a video that looks at experiments set up with dolphins to test their math skills. It is also a great look into how real world data tests are set up. It shows the experiment set up including how the people running the tests don’t see the questions so they don’t give the dolphins cues…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkHfWI3E5OY
When am I ever going to use this? A video presentation done by 2 students about being a marine biologist focusing on math but also giving many other facts. I liked this and think it might be great to do as a project in the future!
TRIGONOMETRY STUDENTS:
I would like you to be doing the same thing! Here are a few additional websites that deal with trigonometry:
https://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2012/07/18/354857 3.htm
Dolphins may be math geniuses! This is a word document that talks about amplitude!
https://www.embibe.com/exams/real-life-applications-of-trigonometry/
Real life uses of trigonometry. This word document gives a few general uses in multiple careers.
Please check your email this week. I will be sending you something about trying to review trigonometry with the Khan Academy and trying a class Zoom!

AppliedWe’ve looked at solving systems by graphing, substitution, & elimination. We’ve worked on it, reviewed it, and practiced it. Today, let’s just have a little fun with it. The link below will take you to 3 pages of review material, mainly using elimination. Read through it. Compare it to what we have done previously. Take the system that is given and solve it without looking at what they did. Then, compare your work with theirs. Then, when you are done with those 3 pages, have some fun playing games on cool math dot com.

AlgebraHere’s a simplistic way of reviewing what we already know about polynomials. Read these & take notes where appropriate.

Once you’ve read this material & compared it to what you already knew, take some time to have some fun by playing some games on cool math dot com.

GeometryWe’ve been using radicals and working to simplify them. I also showed you some rationalizing of denominators, as well as using conjugates. This will remind you of those concepts and/or solidify those skills. Once you’re done, have some fun by playing cool math dot com.
