Hello everyone,

You will find various enrichment activities on the following pages. The pages are ordered alphabetical by teacher. I hope you are all staying healthy and safe while the school is closed. Please remember that we are just an email away and look forward in aiding anyway we can. Thanks.

Mr. BloomAbove all, please know that you can email me or contact me through Band App for help or explanation anytime.

TrigonometryI would like you to send me various pictures through our BAND app showing places in your home or out in nature that display trigonometric ideas we talked about in class. Please feel free to make me a short video and explain which ideas you are showing.

Pre CalculusI would like you to shoot a short video of something around you dealing with any topic we discussed in class this year. Please be creative and submit it to my email or share it on the BAND app.

Statistics Please use your phone and make a video showing any topic that we talked about in class this year. Please keep the video short and feel free to either email it or send it to me via our BAND app. I look forward to seeing your creativity.

AP CalculusPlease continue to work on the sample questions from last week. Hone your skills for derivatives and integration. If you have not researched L’Hopital’s rule, I would suggest taking a look at the following video. https://youtu.be/PdSzruR5OeE

Enrichment Week 4 – Graphing polynomials

This week for Enrichment we are going to work on aspects of graphing polynomials. The following links will take to the Kahn Academy website.

We will again be using Khan Academy. If you have not yet created account you need to do so. The link is below.

Mrs. McGeeHONORS TRIGONOMETRY STUDENTS:

Please check your school email! I have sent you a class code to join our trigonometry class in KHAN ACADEMY. We will be starting out reviewing the trigonometry that we have covered so far this year. Once I see your name show up in the class, I can activate the assignments I have given you. The initial assignment was 3 short activities to make sure everyone could get in. This week more will be added and I will send a new email out to you. So far 4 of you are in, let’s hope for everyone! If you have any questions please send me an email!

ALGEBRA CLASSES:Hello everyone! I am thinking out of the box again for this week’s enrichment activity. You know that age old question, “WHEN WILL WE EVER USE THIS?” Well that’s what I want you to look at this week. I want you to think of an ACTIVITY that you are interested in and explore how math is used in your activity! My favorite sport is swimming (as you all know)! I also like skiing (yes, I have skied all over the world: New England, Colorado and even Austria and Switzerland in my younger days – but never black diamonds!). In my imagination I can ice skate like the professionals but I have to settle for

23

Page 24: Math Department #4 · Web viewMath Department #4 Hello everyone, You will find various enrichment activities on the following pages. The pages are ordered alphabetical by teacher

watching them! I would like to see what you find about math in an activity you are interested in! Here are some ways you could do that, you can

Write me and tell me what you found do what I did in my example and put interesting links in a word document make a video come up with any other creative options… or just take some time and investigate

My Example: OLYMPIC SPORTS –

Check them all out and then start looking for your own …

https://www.nbclearn.com/portal/site/learn/cuecard/47266

This site talks about the Winter Olympics. It is an awesome easy to understand video. It gives many uses of math from simple scoring in figure skating, speed skating using rates, hockey using angles and goes all the way up to calculus examples.

https://www.nbclearn.com/science-and-engineering-of-the-2014-olympic-winter-games/cuecard/68323

Here are my figure skaters! This video starts out talking about physics with center of mass, but then talks about PARABOLAS, what we were working on in March! Math and science are very closely related to each other and this talks about both.

https://www.wired.com/2016/08/wanna-swim-like-ledecky-take-dive-physics-drag/

Here is my swimming example! It is a little more physics centered talking about drag and the way the athletes try to change up their strokes to be even better Olympians!

This is an NFL football example (ESPN) sent to me last week by a student. It is great example except the player is a Seattle Seahawk and not a Philadelphia Eagle!

Hey guys, I hope everyone is doing well

AppliedHere’s a video to help apply systems of equations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO4kj5kemdw

Here’s a video discussing systems of Inequalities, the very next topic in our text.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMfHgcxRSvo

AlgebraHere's a video illustrating exactly what I taught to those who showed for the ZOOM class this week. I also sent a handout on the same material to all of you. Watch the video & try the handout.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPYfGMeqzzk

For those of you who did come to the ZOOM class this week. Here’s a topic we didn’t get to as yet. In other words, this will

26

Page 27: Math Department #4 · Web viewMath Department #4 Hello everyone, You will find various enrichment activities on the following pages. The pages are ordered alphabetical by teacher

be our very next topic. Here’s your chance to get a head start on it. Watch it. Try it. And likely you’ll understand what we talk about next week much better.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AezZPfMWVjE

GeometryHere’s a couple of short videos illustrating what angles or elevation & angles of depression are. For those of you who joined me this week may want to skip them. But, they are very short. You choose.

Here’s a video showing you exactly how to use them to calculate heights and/or distances.

Here’s yet another video showing you the next step in a more challenging situation.
