Mental Math (3-5 minutes):
Counting up by 2s starting at 1, odd numbers to 50Counting back by 2s starting at 50, even numbers
Students count up and backwards to 50 by 2s.
Sequential Gradual Release Model:
Yesterday we worked to find all the ways to show the numbers 7and 12 in name collection boxes. Today we are going to addonto these name collection boxes by naming these numbers ineven more ways! Besides addition and subtraction numbersentences, there are many other ways to rename numbers!
Show students anchor chart of renaming possibilities:
I Do Students are sitting on the rug listening at a Level 0. Narrate
Proximity on the carpet.
Guide students through the process of renaming the numberseven by going down the list of the anchor chart. For each name
on the anchor chart, write the equivalent of the number sevengiven by students. Create the name collection box of 12 on

Explain to students that they will be working with their buddiesto create a name collection box for a specific number that wewill be hanging up in the classroom. Let them know that otherstudents will use their name collection box to help them betterunderstand numbers, so its important that everything in theirboxes are correct.
We Do Students work with their buddies to create a namecollection box for a given number, using the anchor chartto help them. Students are given 7 minutes to fill up thename collection box with as many equivalent names aspossible.
Assist groups that are confused; pull a group basedon the exit ticket the previous day and have that groupworking to create one name collection box with me onthe carpet if needed.
Add hardest working group to nice work section, letstudents know I will be looking for hardest workersahead of time.
Work with addition group on the carpet while students areworking independently at their seats.
You Do Students complete additional name collection boxes attheir seats independently.
Working with addition group at this time. We Do Students play rolling to 50 with their math buddies for fiveminutes.
