WHAT IS GREEN TECHNOLOGY

• GREEN TECHNOLOGY DOESN’T USE FOSSIL FUELS SO IT ISN’T POLLUTIVE

• IT IS RENWABLE

• IT CAN BE MADE FROM WATER , WIND AND THE SUN

• Renewable energy technologies are clean sources of energy that have a much lower environmental impact than conventional energy technologies.

• Renewable energy will not run out. Ever. Other sources of energy are finite and will some day be depleted.

WHAT IS HAPPENING

The energy crisis is real. The demand for energy will soon be greater than supply and the carbon emissions from electrical sources are one of the primary contributing factors to the global warming phenomenon.

• A solar panel is made up of many small solar cells. Each solar cell uses light to make electricity.

Role of Mathematics in Solar Energy

Today we are going to explain the role ofmathematics in Solar Energy. We are going todiscuss-

• Cost Effectiveness

• Shape of Panels

• Surface Area of Panels

Page 6: Maths in Solar Energy - Fair and Square Mathematicians

Cost Effectiveness

Solar Panels are good to use but are noteconomically viable. They are not useful inIndia and will become only when there is aincrease in rate of electricity coupled withdecline of rate of solar panel. We come to aconclusion to this by following calculation.

Geometry of Solar Panels

Solar Panels can be found in every shape. MostFrequently they are found in rectangularshape. They are very large and acquire lot ofspace of terrace. They rectangle is made up ofsmall square silicon. They are blue in colour.

Surface Area Of Solar Panel

Solar Panels are installed on roof tops, backyards and garden. Solar Panels acquire large space even if we use it for some part of home only. So we cannot take risk of buying them without measuring Area they panels will occupy.

Page 9: Maths in Solar Energy - Fair and Square Mathematicians

How to Calculate the Area?

The formulae of calculating the area is-

Total Power Output=Total Area x Solar Irradiance x Conversion Efficiency

We can take Total Area x and find the value

Page 10: Maths in Solar Energy - Fair and Square Mathematicians

Example

Let us take Total Output Watt = 1000wConversion Efficiency= 18%Solar Irradiance = 1000w/m

1000=Area x 0.18 x 10001000=Area x 180Area=1000/180

= 5.56m2The Surface Area of the panel with above

information will be 5.56m2

Notes on Installing Panels

• Do remember that solar panels are usually installed at an angle to the earth surface and this may change the results somewhat.

• Imagine a solar panel has a conversion efficiency of 100% i.e. it converts all the solar energy into electrical energy then all you would need is a 1 m2 solar panel to produce 1000 Watts of electrical energy.

Fact

Did you know that sun only needs to shine for 5hrs for powering whole worlds Solar Energy for a whole year.

Page 13: Maths in Solar Energy - Fair and Square Mathematicians

Conclusion

• Solar Energy is not worth in India until there is increase in rate of electricity with decline in rate of Solar Panel

• Solar Panels are available in every shape depending upon the purpose it is used

• Solar Panels occupy much of space

• The formulae of Surface Area of Panel is-

Total Power Output=Total Area x Solar Irradiance x Conversion Efficiency
