General ruleNo one can cut down a tree on private pro-perty without being granted an authorization certificate.

The removal, the severing, the pruning or the cutting of more than 50 % of the living crown or the root system is considered as tree felling.

However, a certificate of authorization is not required when the trunk diameter is less than 10 cm, mesured at 1.50 m from the ground level.

No certificate of authorization is required to cut a hedge.

ExceptionsA certificate of authorization may be issued in the following circumstances only*:

The tree is dead or suffering from an incurable illness

The tree is dangerous for citizens’ health or safety

The tree or its roots are causing landsite damage

The tree is impeding construction or develop ment authorized by the City

The tree is having a negative effect on the growth and development of neigh- bouring trees

* In all cases, the applicant must justify the application

ReplacementThe City requires that a felled tree be replaced. In this case, it is the owner’s responsability to choose the tree species and to plant it in an appropriate location on his yard. The new tree must measure at least 1.5 m in height from the ground level and have a trunk of at least 5 cm in diameter when planted.

Branch pick-upThe City does not offer a branch pick-up service for felled trees. Only branches from pruning or trimming will be picked up, according to the collection calendar scheduled by the City.

Trees subject to restrictionsThe species listed below cannot be planted within 8 m of an easement for water or sewer infrastructure passage, nor from a property line, except along shoreline.*

Poplars

Silver maples

Weeping willows

Any other species with creeping roots

* Ash tree is a prohibited species

Building constructionDuring the construction of a building, a plan must be submitted showing the location of all trees on the property to determine which ones will be cut during the construction and those that will preserved and protected.

Trees in the front yardDuring the construction of a new residential building or extension, trees must be planted in the front yard. The minimum requirements for planting trees are the following :

One tree every 10 m of frontage unless they already exist

A 12-month delay following the end of the construction is given in order to replant the trees
