What IS MATTER?

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.

Matter is composed of tiny fundamental particles called atoms.

Matter may be invisible, like air.

Matter may be heavy , like a rock.

What

IS M

ATTE

R?

Solids:1. Definite shape

2. Definite volume

3. Particles cling to one another

4. Maintains shape outside of a container

5. Amorphous solids: plastics, gels, and glass do not have a any regular internal geometric pattern

R?

Liquids:1. NO definite shape

2. Definite volume

3. Particles stick, but not rigidly

4. Does NOT maintain shape outside of a container

Gases:1. NO definite shape

2. No definite volume

3. Particles move independently of one another

What IS MATTER?

Mixture: 2 or more substances:

• Mixtures can be separated. They have two types:

• Homogeneous – A mixture that is uniform throughout the solution and has the same properties consistently. Example: pool water

• Heterogeneous – A mixture where the matter is physically distinct. Example: soil

Curriculum-Nevada State Standard:

P.12.A.1 Students know different molecular arrangements and motions account for the different physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases.

Objectives: Students will know the definition of matter. Students will be able to distinguish between the various physical states of matter and know aspects of each state. Students will be able to differentiate heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. Students will know the difference between pure substances and mixtures.

Instruction-Procedures: Matter and Change PowerPoint presentation. Copies of slides for student review. Begin with a general overview of matter. Discuss states of matter with graphic. Delineate aspects of each type of matter. Discuss pure substances and mixtures. Discuss heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures.

Assessment-How will you check student learning:

Short group quiz / handout for students to use for exam study. Homework: students are to write a paragraph describing matter. The description shall include a definition of matter, states of matter and one example of EACH state.
