  • Lesson 6

  • Jesus’ First Talk

  • Sermon on the Mount Chapter 5

    1. What people in the kingdom will look like (5-7:28). a) The Beatitudes (5:1-12). - Jesus’ upside-down kingdom - The character of a disciple (deals with the

heart): humble, merciful, peacemaker, desires God and what is good, strives to live right (pure), depends on God, will suffer.

  • Sermon on the Mount Chapter 5

    b) Salt and Light (5:13-16). - The Rabbis commonly used salt as an

image for wisdom. Salt also preserves.

    - (light) A secret disciple is of no use to the world.

    c) Jesus did not come to abolish the Law and

the Prophets, but to fulfill them (5:17-20).

  • Sermon on the Mount Chapter 5

    d) Murder and Adultery (5:21-30). - The Lord looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). - Thinking is the same as doing in regards to

sin. e) “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your

neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (5:43-44).

Summary: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly

    Father is perfect” (5:48).

  • Sermon on the Mount Chapter 6

    f) Religious observance. -Giving to the needy, prayer, fasting. (Also 3 of the 5 pillars of Islamic faith). -Emphasis on the condition of the heart not

outward actions. - Don’t do ‘acts of righteousness’ to be seen

by people (hypocrites). - Forgiveness is not an option (6:14-15). g) Store up treasures in heaven. “You cannot serve both God and Money.”

  • Sermon on the Mount Chapter 7

    h) Do not judge others (look at your own life first).

    i) You will recognize those in the kingdom by their “fruits”.

Warning: “Not everyone who says to me,

‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (7:21).

  • Sermon on the Mount Chapter 7

Conclusion: j) The wise and foolish builder (7:24). - Which one are you? “Everyone who hears these words of mine

and puts them into practice is like the wise man who built his house on the rock” (7:24).

  • Matthew 7:28-29 When Jesus had finished saying these things,

the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority,

and not as their teachers of the law.

  • Jesus’ Second Talk

  • 2. The missionary work of the kingdom (10-11:1).

    - Preach this message: the kingdom of

“heaven” is near. - Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those

who have leprosy, drive out demons. - If people don’t listen to you, move on to

    others.

  • - Be shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. - Do not worry about money, about what to say, or about being persecuted (you will be persecuted). - Your Father in heaven will take care of you.

    2. The missionary work of the kingdom (10-11:1).

  • Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever

loses his life for my sake will find it. He who receives you receives me, and he who

receives me receives the one who sent me.

    Matthew 11:39-49

  • Jesus’ Third Talk

  • 3. The parables of the kingdom (13:1-53).

The Parables may have been answers to the

questions the people were thinking in regards to the kingdom. (Benno Przybylski).

  • a) Why are there so few

people in the kingdom? Answer - The problem is not the seed, but the ground. - The problem is not the message, but the people.

    3. The parables of the kingdom (13:1-53).

  • The Weeds & The Net b) Why are there so many wicked in the kingdom? Answer -Good and bad will be together until the end. - Now is the time of salvation, judgment will

    come.

    3. The parables of the kingdom (13:1-53).

  • The Mustard Seed & The Yeast c) Will the kingdom always be small? Answer -It starts small and grows.

    3. The parables of the kingdom (13:1-53).

  • The Hidden Treasure & The Pearl d) How can I discover the kingdom? Answer -Unexpectedly. (v. 44 – treasure).

-By looking for it. (v. 45 – the pearl).

    3. The parables of the kingdom (13:1-53).

  • Jesus’ Fourth Talk

  • 4. The greatest in the kingdom (18).

    a) One who is humble like a little child. - One who trusts as a child trusts. - One who welcomes and does not look down on children/youth. - Another possible interpretation: One who welcomes and does not look down on the unbeliever - as it is followed by the Parable of the Lost Sheep.

    b) One who forgives.

  • The way to deal with someone who has sinned against you (18:15-17).

    • Go show them their fault just between the two of you. If they do not listen…

    • Take one or two others along. If they do not listen… • Tell it to the church. If they do not listen… • Treat them like an unbeliever and a sinner.

How did Jesus treat unbelievers and a sinners?

  • Forgiveness

How many times should we forgive someone? (18:21-22).

Forever. (Which is then followed by the Parable of the

    Unmerciful Servant).

  • Jesus’ Fifth Talk

  • 5. The end of this age (24 - 26:1).

    - Many false teachers will come claiming to be

the messiah. - There will be wars, famines, earthquakes. - All these are the beginning of birth pains (24:8). - Christians will be persecuted and put to

    death.

  • - Many will turn away from the faith, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved (24:13).

    - The gospel of the kingdom will be preached to the whole world.

    - Then the end will come (24:14). - No one knows the day of the hour of these

    things (24:36).

    5. The end of this age (24 - 26:1).

  • The Parable of the Ten Virgins - Keep watch/always be ready. - You can’t rely on another’s preparedness. The Parable of the Talents - Put to work the things God has blessed you

    with.

    5. The end of this age (24 - 26:1).

  • The Sheep and the Goats - Will be separated in the end. - “You will know them by their fruits” (7:15-23). - “Whatever you did to the least of these you did to me, whatever you did not do to the least of these you did not do to me.” (Jesus).

    5. The end of this age (24 - 26:1).

  • Implications: We prepare for the end not by trying to calculate

the date, but by a life of constant readiness. “It is not a matter of passively ‘waiting’, but

of responsible activity, producing results which the coming ‘master’ can see and approve. For the period of waiting was not intended to be an empty, meaningless ‘delay’, but a period of opportunity to put good use the ‘talents’ entrusted to (us).” (R.T. France).

    5. The end of this age (24 - 26:1).
