EveryChrisAaniscommandedtobea"disciple"ofChrist.Theworddisciplemeansalearner,apupil,ascholar,onewhodesirestobetaught.AdiscipleofChrististhereforea"lifelong"learner,becausethereisalwaysmoreroomforgrowthandmaturityinone'swalkwithChrist.Colossians3:10says,"...youhaveclothedyourselveswithabrand-newnaturethatisconAnuallybeingrenewedasyoulearnmoreandmoreaboutChrist."

ThereisastoryfromthelifeofAristotlewhereayoungmandesiredtobehisdisciple.Aristotleanswered,"followmemyson".TheboyfollowedhimtoalakeandconAnuedtoverbalizehisdesiretobeadiscipleofAristotle.TheboyfollowedAristotleintothewater,first

ankledeep,thenwaistdeep,thenshoulderdeep.Aristotlereachedovertotheboyandputhishandonhisheadanddunkedhimunderwaterandbeingalargemanwasabletoholdhimthere.Theboywasnotconcernedatfirst,unAlhebegantolosehisbreath.Eventuallyashethrashedaroundinthewater,hebecamedesperateforair.FinallyAristotlelettheboyup.Astheboygaspedforair,hescreamedatAristotle,"Iwanttobeyourdisciple,andyouaretryingtokillme!Whatiswrongwithyou?"TowhichAristotleresponded,"Whenyoudesperatelydesiretobemydisciplethewayyoudesperatelydesiredtobreath,thenyoucanbemydisciple."

Four Spiritual Skills (DisciplinedClimbing)

Notlonga]erIgraduatedfromHighSchool,oneofmyfellowfootballplayerswenttoYosemiteNaAonalParkforthedaywithsomefriends.Whilehikingaroundthegraniterocks,helosthisbalance,fell,hithisheadanddied.Hewasnotanexperiencedclimber,andhismisjudgmentoftherisksinvolvedcosthimhislife.Therearemanyoldclimbers.Therearealsomanyboldmountainclimbers,buttherearenotmany"old,bold"mountainclimbers.Wiseclimbersknowthatthereareskillsanddisciplinesinvolvedinmountainclimbingthatminimizetherisksinvolved.TheBiblesaysthattheChrisAanisto"disciplineyourselfforthepurposeofgodliness."1Timothy4:7
