The workshop Mauertag im April is aimed at all those who are curious about the Berlin wall and its metaphors the world. In the 21st century our image of a globalized world seems paradoxical to the heavy increase in barriers designed to create or maintain divisions. The interpretation of the wall is just as striking from a geopolitical point of view as from the artistic. And it is exactly this point that captures our interest: let's think!

As a documentary and illustrative platform it invites us to an open and dynamic debate.

o What does the wall of Berlin mean ?

o What place will its memory take in the future globalized world ?

o Which are the challenges of the wall ?

o How can it inspire us ?

o Where is its place between myth and reality, fantasy and denunciation ?

o How does one distinguish between a frontier and a wall ?

o How can one understand cultural identity in this peculiar context ? (...)

The Virtuelle Mauer is the main project of the workshop.

The reconstruction of the Berlin Wall in 3D is the result of 5 years of investigation of the artists collective T+T which is formed by Tamiko Thiel (renowned artist in the field of Augmented Reality) and Teresa Reuter (acknowledged architect) as well as national and international pedagogic and scientific work groups.

The way the installation works is fairly simple. The visitor is given a joystick with which he can move around the wall. The presence of the wall is imminent and whenever a limit is crossed a frontier guard will appear. One can climb one of the platforms and can overview the city of Berlin of those days. The virtual staging of the wall renders it something tangible and graspable to the viewer and offers an unusually stunning experience.

This installation was shown at important institutions such as the MoMA in New York, the LABoral in Gijón (Spain), the "Stadtmuseum" y "Museum für Kommunikation" in Berlin as well as various locations of the Goethe Institute in the United States and India. In 2009 the 3D installation was awarded the Grand Prize of the IBM Innovation Awards.

American video-artist Shelly Silver proposes a groundbreaking work.

The documentary Former East / Former West collected together interviews with Berliners made just two years after the fall of the wall. These reflect two realities now united in a single democratic government. There is an obvious need for a redefinition of identity, but they did not fully appreciate what this meant, and there is a palpable atmosphere of doubt mixed with willingness and nostalgia. Their testaments are fascinating, not only for their contemporaneity but also because they reveal to us this decisive moment of the end of the cold war.

The documentary has been shown in well-known institutions such as Berlin´s Berlinische Galerie, the Lincoln Centre and the MoMA in New York, the MUAC (University’s Museum of Contemporary Art) in Mexico...

"Anyone who wants to better understand why it is so difficult to 'merge what belongs together' will want to see this film." Dr. Christopher Stomach, New Hampshire German Symposium

The barriers within is a documentary film by Atelier Limo.

Between 2006 and 2009 these arquitects and geographical investigators tirelessly followed the 3000km between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic that marked the course of the Iron Curtain. They gathered memories from a wide spectrum of witnesses, who despite their hugely diverse personalities and lives, bear the common scars associated with a 30 year long political wound. The documentary suggests how this artificial boundary may have come to condition peoples´daily lives and helped them develop a strength bound to this history. The documentary´s collection is both dynamic and emotive.

In 2009 the film was shown by a travelling cinema at 40 border sites. In Berlin it was shown at the "Zeughaus Kino" and at the "Haus der Kulturen der Welt" amongst others.

Extracción is an experimental documentary film made by the artist Gabriel Acevedo Velarde.

It’s about a trip to the triple border area between Peru Bolivia and Brazil. The construction of an “intercontinental” highway that will make possible (for the first time) to cross directly from a country to others is about to finish. Along with new free-trade treaties, this will drastically accelerate the transformation of the area.

The main goal of the trip has been to understand how the borders still divide the three countries and whether a new regional identity is taking shape. 55 interviews to people have been made of the three nationalities, asking especially about their perception of the neighboring countries and about the recent change in the area.

In the documentary, the name of each country can't be heard on purpose. In this way, the artist creates suspense that neutralizes the differences. We're showing the video of his process.

This project has been shown in 2010 at the São Paulo Art Biennial.
