YOUTH TOTUS TUUS SUMMER MISSION ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED IN JUNE OF 2020

HAS BEEN CANCELED!

THANK YOU!

Thank you to the many St. Francis Xavier Cathedral and St. John the Evangelist parish families who so generously accepted the invitation to make and send Easter cards to our home bound, elderly, and those suffering from illness and loneliness during this difficult time. It is our hope that the 150 cards and the sweet sentiments enclosed have brought joy and encouragement to those who have received them. In addition, family members mentioned that they would be offering prayers for each recipient as they made each card. What a beautiful gesture of love! May God bless the givers and receivers! Stay strong everyone and let us all PERSEVERE IN HOLY LIVING during these uncertain times. Never forget..."We are the Easter people and Hallelujah is our song!" ~Pope St. John Paul II

Thank you to all parishioners for your generosity during these times! Cathedral is the recipient of a COVID-19 Payroll Protection Program from the Federal Government. This assistance helps maintain the payroll for the next eight weeks.

FROM FR. BRIAN Dear Friends in Christ, I know that this year has been a great trial and source of suffering. There is a fear of the unknown. Social gatherings with friends are not permitted, and even family gatherings are discouraged. Schools and universities are closed. Summer activities have been cancelled and travel plans postponed indefinitely. Many stores are closed. Bars, bowling alleys, theatres and other places of entertainment have shut down. Routine services have been suspended. We can’t even get haircuts or workout at our favorite gym. Sadly, people who are dying, lay alone on their deathbeds. Funeral services have been limited to immediate family only, depriving others of the human need to grieve and mourn and offer expressions of sympathy and prayers. Those who are hospitalized are made to face their illnesses alone, fathers are not allowed to witness the births of their children, and priests and clergy are not allowed to visit. The elderly, particularly those living alone or in nursing homes, are isolated and some, such as those experiencing dementia or similar illnesses, do not understand why. Some have lost their jobs, even if temporarily, and are struggling to make ends meet or keep a family business or farm going. We are prevented from gathering for Mass and the sacraments, and as such, feel spiritually famished. All of these things, and an array more, fell upon us so quickly and hit us hard. We are by nature social beings and this pandemic is taking a toll on us. We depend upon the grace of God, but also upon each other in more ways than we realize. With firm faith in Christ, we will persevere. We look forward to the day we can gather again as a community of faith in our church. Many of us are folks who, have the need to have everything figured out and be in control. We become extremely uncomfortable when we seemingly lose control and have to live with such uncertainty. Perhaps some of us have never been more uncertain of what tomorrow holds than now. With certain faith, the Lord will bring us through this and each day that passes comes closer to the end of the crisis. We will persevere, but only God knows when this will end. I wish that I would be able to provide you with more information as to how and when the churches will re-open, and ceremonies such as First Communion, Confirmation, weddings, and funerals can be celebrated as they ought to be. When will Religious Education or Confirmation classes begin again? How will we get everyone prepared in a timely manner? The answers to those questions, I simply do not know. I ask your patience and understanding. As soon as we are able to resume, we will, at that time, develop a strategy. I am certain that everything will work out according to God’s providence. Nevertheless, at this time, all we can do is take things one day at a time, trusting in the Lord. I am extremely grateful that we have been a beneficiary of the Payroll Protection Program (PPP). Thanks to that, we have been able to continue to pay the salaries for our clergy and staff. Some of that money can also be used to assist with our utilities bill. Nevertheless, we still invite your stewardship. Thank you for your amazing generosity during this time. Whereas our weekly offertory is down, I am simply amazed at the number who have continued to support the parish during this pandemic. Some have been mailing in contributions, whereas others have begun contributing by on-line giving. Thank you! For those of you who are wondering how you can contribute to your parish, you can do so simply by mailing in your offering. If you require assistance with on-line giving or would like more information about it, please contact the parish office. Thank you, so much, for your generosity and sacrifices to your parish, as well as your kind concern and prayers for me during this time. ~Blessings, Fr. Brian

FROM DEACON. TOM

From Deacon Tom, I am frustrated. I cannot do what I have been ordained to do, visit the homebound; take communion to the sick; and proclaim the Gospel. Or if I can, it is severely limited. There is a limit on what we can do for baptisms and funerals. Every other week I am allowed to assist Father at Mass on Sunday morning at 9 am. Deacon Conrad and I alternate weeks. Am I complaining? I am not, but I am frustrated. I know all of us are frustrated with the current situation. However when I look and see the numbers on how many people have contracted the Covid – 19 virus, I feel that I am blessed. I am blessed that I was able to bless the cars that came through our parking lot last Saturday and especially, I am blessed to have you as a fellow parishioner. Join me in praying the prayer of St. Francis:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. I look forward to seeing all of you in person again soon Peace, ~Deacon Tom

Grace Notes Ah, Spring is in the air. And here we are, entering another week of the stay-at-home

order as the world struggles with the coronavirus. We have so many things on our minds, feelings we may not quite understand -- "I'm out of work and how am I going to provide for my family?" "My senior year of college came to an abrupt end and what is next?" Or, "my spouse just passed away and we cannot celebrate the funeral Mass with our many family members and friends." We are social beings, longing for social contact -- perhaps a hug from our grown children or from our grandparents, or sharing a meal with dear friends, or attending Mass. Or maybe you have a close relative in a nursing home or in the hospital and are not permitted to visit with them and comfort them. Extraordinary times. Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued the following regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19):

With the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus, we are confronted once more with the fragility of our lives, and again we are reminded of our common humanity; that the peoples of this world are our brothers and sisters, that we are all one family under God. God does not abandon us, he goes with us even now in this time of trial and testing. In this moment, it is important for us to anchor our hearts in the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Now is the time to intensify our prayers and sacrifices for the love of God and the love of our neighbor. Let us draw closer to one another in our love for him, and rediscover the things that truly matter in our lives. (Continued Next Week...)
