Happy Mother’s Day to all of our moms! You are a blessing to us. May God’s abundant blessings be with you.

I wanted to dedicate my column to give you some updates. The Brick by Brick project is supposed to resume this week. There are a few things that need to be addressed before construction resumes. A special thanks to those that have continued to donate by contributions and by ful-filling your pledges to this worthwhile project.

The Archdiocese still has not developed guidelines for the return to celebrating liturgy in the church. They

should be issuing them soon. All other informa-tion can be found on the Archdiocesan website at: AOD.org.

We continue to update our website page, stjamesnovi.org. Please take time to view the the many resourc-es that are provided.

A special thank you for those that continue to support the parish during these challenging times. May God reward you for your sacrificial giving.

Remember to pray and wash!

God’s peace,

Fr. Ed Z.

From Your Parish NurseWhat to do when your child is ill during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

Concern over family and friends contracting coronavirus (COVID-19) is high these days. Scientists are learning new information and making new recommendations daily regarding coronavirus (COVID-19). Many parents have concerns about what to do if their child becomes sick. So far, it appears that most children exhibit similar symptoms as adults, but they generally have much milder cases.

Symptoms Reported symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) in children include cold-like symptoms, such as fever, sore throat, dry cough and fatigue. Vomiting and diarrhea have also been reported but are less frequent. Most children will recover within 1-2 weeks after symptoms start. Some children are asymptomatic with this virus– they will test positive but will look and act healthy.

Treatment at Home Children who are mildly ill with coronavirus (COVID-19) will most likely be able to isolate at home during their illness. If a child becomes ill with viral symptoms, such as fever

and cough, they should be separated from other family members as much as possible. If a child is old enough to wear a facemask, they should do this to try to minimize spread to other family members. Everyone in the family should stay home and continue to frequently wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not easily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands with sanitizer and rub together until they feel dry. If it is possible, the child should use a bathroom that is separate from others used by the family. If this is not possible, the bathroom should be wiped down often with bleach or antibacterial wipes. Parents should also make sure that children are well hydrated and getting plenty of rest. A child may need further medical attention if they begin to have:• trouble drinking• show signs of dehydration,

such as not peeing• have fast or labored

breathing• difficulty staying awake.

Children with underlying health issues such as asthma need to maintain their regular medications and follow their asthma action plan if they develop symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Seeking Treatment A parent should call the child’s pediatrician/physician if they have concerns about their ill child. It is important at this time to not immediately assume an emergency room visit is necessary. A child’s doctor knows his/her medical history and can determine if a child needs to be seen, and what type of visit may be appropriate (whether emergency room, office visit,

virtual care/telemedicine visit, etc.). During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many pediatricians are using technology to provide telehealth medicine. This way a child can stay at home and be evaluated over a video visit using technology like Skype, FaceTime or another telehealth option, and the parent can then be given advice for treatment.

In general, testing for coronavirus (COVID-19) in children is not necessary. Testing will become more available in the future, but it is still largely limited to people who are more severely ill or when knowing the diagnosis will make a difference in treatment or management. There are currently no known treatments or vaccines for coronavirus (COVID-19). Prevention is still the key in keeping children healthy. It is crucial to maintain social distancing, frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and to stay up to date on the most recent information.

An Important Reminder Remember, making sure that your child remains current on the recommended vaccines for typical childhood illnesses is an important part of maintaining optimal health, despite coronavirus (COVID-19). Ascension pediatric practices have implemented safeguards to protect those we serve and minimize the exposure risks related to coronavirus (COVID-19). The current pandemic should not deter you from seeking care or obtaining necessary vaccinations for your baby or child.

sacrament updates

The AOD webinar outlined how to receive communion and a review of the mass. Unfortunately they did not give answers as to when we can schedule the sacramental masses. I do know that the gathering size restrictions and state regulations will be determining factors. Father Ed will be able to give us more direction once we know the restrictions to church gatherings. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything. Please watch the flocknotes, bulletin and website for information

The webinar did NOT address confirmations. The current AOD directive is that confirmations are suspended until further notice. The Bishops confer the sacrament of Confirmation, so the Archdiocese will reschedule all of the missed confirmations. Gathering size, state regulations, and Bishop availability will all be determining factors. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything. Please watch the Flocknotes, bulletin and website for information.

important dates returning soon Happy Mother's Day to all of

our wonderful mothers, grand-mothers, aunts, and caretakers!

Since the kids cannot go to the store, I sent a few craft ideas for the kids to make for those spe-cial people in their lives. These are not assignments, just some mother's day crafts and cards to celebrate. They range in diffi-culty level so that all ages and abilities can find something that they like and siblings can make different presents.

Happy Mother's Day from all of us at St. James! May you feel loved and appreciated today and everyday!

Catechists,

Thank you so much for your time, commitment, and dedi-cation to our students and the St. James Religious Education program! We hope you will be joining us again next year! When I was young, my parents

would pile all of us into the station

wagon to go for an evening drive.

We would head north onto old

country roads. Each time we came

to an intersection, my Dad would

ask, “Which way should we turn?”

and we would take a vote. No plan

or map, we would just explore, sing,

count cows and horses, and enjoy

the scenery.

I have realized that I am a planner

and scheduler. I like to have a

roadmap of my/my kids’ day/

week/month and stick to the

plan. The COVID 19 pandemic has

shed light on my need to let go. I

don’t know what next week or next

month will look like. I want to know

if my summer plans will happen but

I must wait…and wait…and this is a

lesson in faith. In Isaiah 55:8 God

says, “My thoughts are not your

thoughts. Neither are your ways my

ways.” Show me Your ways, Lord!

In today’s Gospel Jesus tell his

disciples that He is going to the

Father to prepare a place for them.

Thomas asks, “How can we know

the way?” Like me, he wants to be

prepared. He wants a road map of

the future. Jesus answers, “I am the

way, the truth and the life.” He is our

map. We need to follow Him, not

knowing where He will take us. As

a planner, this is a challenge, like

walking blindfolded, having to trust

others to keep us safe on the way

to an unknown destination.

That is faith! Trusting that all that

is happening is in God’s hands we

must ask Him, “Which

way should we turn?” We must train

ourselves and our children to turn

to Him with our decisions, to ask for

His guidance, knowing He has the

best plan. In the second reading

Peter writes, “Do not let your hearts

be troubled. You are a chosen race,

a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a

people of His own.”

Show us Your way. Lord!

May God bless and strengthen your

family and keep you well!
