“Remember to lock the door! Don’t answer the phone. And watch over your sister and clean up after yourself and be in bed by nine.” What last minute advice to you give your children before leaving them at home, at someone else’s house or their college dorm?

In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus’ story of separating the sheep and the goats at the final judgement. This was one of Jesus’ last lessons before His passion, so they are His last-minute instructions before physically leaving them. It’s not enough to talk about love, we must act on it. He knows He will be leaving them but says “whatever you do for the least among you, you do for Me.” He says He is present in the poor, the sick and the outcast.

This commission is as much for us to us today as it was for His listeners long ago. As we begin a new season in the church let us look at how we have served Him by serving others since Easter. This is a good discussion for the dinner table or your faith journal. Give yourselves a pat on the back for the times you have been faithful sheep,

feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, and clothing the naked. Then look ahead to the next church season, Advent. Who needs your help? Who is hungry for food or for companionship? Who needs to be clothed in prayer? Who is thirsty for love and acceptance? Make plans to serve others, starting with your family, your neighbors, your church and beyond.

Find ways to encourage your children each time they act in kindness. And give it to Jesus in prayer for

“whatever you do for the least among you, you do for Me.”

May God bless and strengthen your family!

Celebrating Christ the King Sunday: Reflecting Backward and Looking Forward

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, the final Sunday of our liturgical year! On this final feast day of the year, we recognize that Jesus is Lord and reigns over all creation! During this, our “liturgical New Year’s Eve”, we can reflect upon the year and examine how we have walked with Christ through his birth, death, and resurrection over the past year, and also look forward to how we plan to live out His love in our lives in the coming year.

In closing our liturgical year with Christ the King, we usher in our New Year with the Season of Advent, a time of preparation and anticipation for the arrival of Christ. As we celebrate this weekend we are offered the unique opportunity to reflect on the choices we made this past year and also identify changes we can make in our walk with Jesus throughout the coming year, as we renew all things in Christ.

As I reflect over this past year, I wonder: Have I lived out the love of Christ the best I could? Have I served others well? Have I taken as much time to pray, study, and grow in knowledge and understanding of His plan for my life as I should have?

Looking forward to the renewal that the coming year presents, I wonder: How can I live the liturgy better in my life? How can I better reflect Christ’s love outward to others? How can I be more humble, more giving, more Christ-like in my everyday life? What are some concrete changes I can make that will bring me closer to Jesus this year?

I hope that you are able to take some time this weekend, as we celebrate our liturgical “New Year’s Eve” and “New Year's Day” to reflect upon the past year and look forward to the graces of the year to come as we renew and refresh our walk with Jesus.

Blessings to you all!

Computer Paper BoxesIf you have access to computer paper size boxes, we continue to need your help. Our Thanksgiving Basket Project depleted our supply and we need to replenish in order to handle our December food packing. If you are able to bring in a box or two, it is truly appreciated. We request this size only, due to ease of handling and storage. Thank You!

Thanks to your generosity and

kindness, we have received enough items to fill 140

Thanksgiving Baskets this year!

THANKSGIVINGBASKET PROJECT

Our annual Thanksgiving Basket Project will have just wrapped up by the time you read this article. The generosity of our parishioners and the local community is truly inspiring!

St. James provided everything needed for a Thanksgiving dinner as well as enough staples for at least one week or more to 140 families (over 60 items for each family).

Happy ThanksgivingThe many calls we receive from recipients thanking us for remembering them brings our attention to the difference we are making in their lives. They are always thrilled with the food but also for having been made to feel a part of a caring community!

Jeni De Ridder and the Pantry Team once again did an outstanding job in bringing this project to a successful conclusion! They did so with the help of hundreds of volunteers

– those bringing in food donations, financial donations, packers, deliverers, shoppers, etc. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way!

Emergency calls will be coming in from those in the community who are not on our Thanksgiving list. We will also be packing food boxes in December for those on our monthly program. Please continue to support the St. James Food Pantry. We do make a difference!
