    THE VILLAGES, Fla. –

    Professional Bowlers

    Association Hall of Famer

Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo.,

    the 2015 PBA50 Player of

    the Year, began work

    defending that crown by

    winning the PBA50

    UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl

    In The Villages presented

by Rad ica l at Spanish

    Springs Lanes.

    Weber won his fifth career

    PBA50 Tour title by defeat-

ing two-time PBA50 Player of the Year and tour-

nament top qualifier Ron Mohr of Las Vegas, 204-

    162, in the title match.

“I’ve always bowled well here,” said Weber.

“I’ve made the finals here three out of the last four

years and was hoping it would just be a matter of

    time to get a win.”

Weber, a winner of 37 titles, including a record-

tying 10 majors on the PBA Tour, was helped by

three open frames by Mohr, who missed two 10

pins and a four pin. Mohr, an eigh t-time PBA50

Tour titlist, was trying to end a nearly four-year

drought without a win, with his last coming in the

    2012 Senior Decatur Open.

“I feel bad for Ron but he’s the type of guy that

will bounce back no doubt about that,” Weber

    said. “We’ve all been there.

    Sometimes when you miss

    an easy spare, that frustra-

    tion can make things worse.

    We were both having trou-

ble tha t game— I could

     bare ly get a double.”

    The win solidified a good

    start to the season for

    Weber who finished fourth

    in last week’s season-open-

    ing Pasco County Florida

    Open.

    “I’m feeling good physi-

cally and my game is in a

good shape so I’m looking forward to another

    good season,” Weber added.

In the semifinal, Weber beat PBA50 Tour new-

comer Joel Carlson of Omaha, Neb., 268-223, to

    advance to the championship match.

In the opening stepladder match, Carlson beat

four-time PBA50 Player of the Year and 12-time

PBA50 Tour winner Tom Baker of King, N.C.,

224-213, and then went on to beat 2015 PBA50

Rookie of the Year Mike Scroggins of Amarillo,

Texas, 268-217, to advance to the semifinal.

PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli bowled

three 300 games which tied the record for most

300s in a PBA50 Tour tournament with four other

bowlers – Mohr, Bob Kelly, Joe Scarborough and

    Walter Ray Williams Jr.

    ior Emily Eckhoff and Robert

    Morris-Illinois freshman Daniel

    Hanson captured individual

titles at the 2016 IntercollegiateSingles Championships.

    Eckhoff defeated Fairleigh

    Dickinson's Morgan Brown,

    227-222, at Northrock Lanes to

become the first player in ISC

    history to repeat as champion,

    while Hanson defeated San Jose

    State's Darren Tang, 203-174, to

    garner the men's title.

CBS Sports Network will air the

    semifinals and finals for the

men's broadcast will be May 17

    at 9 p.m. Eastern.

In contrast to last year's victory,

    Eckhoff had to come from

     behind to repeat.

Brown could have doubled inthe 10th frame to shut out

Eckhoff, but she only was able

to strike on her first offering.

    Eckhoff, who made a ball

    change earlier in the game,

calmly doubled in the final stan-

za to capture her second consec-

    utive ISC crown.

    "This is the greatest feeling

    ever," said Eckhoff, who was

    selected as a National

    Collegiate Bowling Coaches

    Association Second Team All-

American. "I knew I needed to

    come out aggressive, especially

    after making a ball change.

Once I made that ball change, Iknew I needed to throw the best

shots of my life. And, I accom-

plished it this time . This is the

    greatest feeling ever, and I'm

    still shocked by it."

Eckhoff earned her spot in the

    finals by defeating Webber

    International's Tawni Vollmer,

    208-188, in the semifinals,

    while Brown bested Stephen F.

    Austin's Stephanie Schwartz in

    the other semifinal, 210-162.

In the men's title match, Hanson

    struggled early with opens in

two of the first three frames, but

a timely ball change, and back-

to-back opens from Tang inframes eight and nine, provided

Hanson the chance to shut out

Tang for the win. Hanson deliv-

ered two strikes in the 10th

frame to seal the ISC victory.

"I just tried to stay as calm as I

    could," said Hanson, who rolled

    a 300 game during ISC

    Sectional qualifying to earn his

    spot in Wichita. "Obviously,

you look up at the scoreboard

    when you're in that situation,

and I saw I could get the ninth,

and two in the 10th (frame), to

pretty much lock it up as long as

I stayed behind the line on the

third one. So, I just said 'calmdown and throw the best shots

    of your life.'"

    Hanson defeated UNLV's Dallas

    Leong in his semifinal match,

    212-180, opening the contest

with four strikes in the first five

frames to set the tone. In the

    other men's semifinal match,

Tang survived a late scare from

    Robert Morris-Illinois' Kenny

    Ryan to advance, 218-205.

    WICHITA, Kan. – The

    McKendree men and the Webber

    International women claimed titles

    at the Intercollegiate Team

    Championships.

    McKendree defeated William

    Paterson, 3-2, in the best-of-five

title match to capture the program's

    first Intercollegiate Team

    Championships title. On the

    women's side, Webber International

knocked off Wichita State, 3-1, to

raise the Kerm Helmer Cup.CBS Sports Network will air the

    women's championship match May

    24 at 10 p.m. Eastern, while the

men's final will be shown June 4 at

    noon EDT.

    William Paterson jumped out to

an early 2-0 lead and found itself

one game away from earning the

    school’s second national title, and

    first since 1992. But, McKendree

seized the momentum in the third

    and fourth games, capturing 213-

    152 and 225-190 victories, respec-

    tively.

“Being down 0-2 was no different

    than what we experienced during

the entire tournament,” said senior Riley Smith, who was a member of

the 2013 ITC runner-up team. “In

match play, you’re going to win

games, and you’re going to lose

games, but it just matters when it is.

We happened to lose the first two

games, but we win the next three.

We happened to lose the first two

    against Webber (yesterday), but

that’s OK, we can win games, too.

That’s the mindset we have, and we

    understand that.”

    In Game 5, McKendree held a 24-

pin lead after five frames, before

    William Paterson threw three con-

secutive strikes in frames six, seven

    and eight. The Bearcats countered

with four strikes of their own before

an open in the ninth frame gave thePioneers a slim chance at victory.

    William Paterson sophomore

Jake Rollins needed to strike out in

the 10th frame to force McKendree

to strike or spare in the final frame

to claim victory. Rollins left a 2 pin

on the first offering, which he

spared and followed with a strike

on the fill shot. McKendree needed

just nine pins in the 10th frame

    from sophomore Greg Young to

    secure the program’s first national

    championship, and Young delivered

a strike to record the win.

    “This means everything,” said

head coach Dennis Knepper, who is

in his eighth season at the helm.“They were getting up and going to

workouts at 6 a.m., having practice

until 6 p.m. and keeping their

grades up. They committed to what

we were looking for. This is a great

group of kids. Plus, it’s been a

     blessing having Bryan and Shannon

    (O’Keefe) onboard because they

want the same thing I want.”

    The McKendree team Smith,

    Young, Shawn Bibee, Billy

    Goodman, Alex Martin, Ryan

    Mooney, Ryan Patterson and James

    Stanley.

    In the women’s final, Webber

    International struggled out of the

gate, dropping the opening game to

    Wichita State, 207-177, but evened

the match in Game 2, 230-215.Game 3 would prove to be the dif-

    ference as Webber’s Tawni Vollmer

stepped up in the 10th frame and

tossed a double to seal a victory,

    203-196.

“I think team-wise that was defi-

    nitely the momentum we needed,”

said Vollmer, who claimed her first

    ITC title with Robert Morris-

Illinois in 2014. “I think, personally

for me, doing that, and knowing I

could do it for my team, was really

what I needed to do. So, I think just

being together as one, and obvious-

ly the momentum going into that

game, was what did it for us.

"It’s just unreal. Truly a teameffort. I’m so proud to be able to

call these girls my teammates. I’m

so proud I could step up and be

there for them just as much as

they’ve been there for me through-

    out the entire season.”

    The Shockers, looking for their

10th ITC title and first since 2009,

began Game 4 with hopes of

extending the match, struck in four

of their first five frames. But,

Webber had other plans. Despite an

open in the first frame, the Warriors

struck in seven of the next eight

frames on the way to a 238-213 vic-

tory and their third ITC title.

“It’s a great feeling of accom- plishment and hard to express into

    words,” head coach Randy

Stoughton said. “They work so hard

to do what they came here to do,

and to see them perform when it

means the most, as a coach, is the

most rewarding thing. I can’t tell

you what this group means to me. I

just love them. They’ve worked so

hard, they’re good people and great

     bowlers.”

    The Webber team included

    Vollmer, Taylor Bulthuis, Verity

    Crawley, Rebecca Czlapinski,

    Desiree Negron, Daria Pajak, Kelly

    Skalacki and Tania Yusaf.

Jessica Mellott of McKendreeand Jake Rollins of William

    Paterson were the tournament’s

    most valuable players.

    Joining Mellott on the women’s

    all-tournament team were Crawley,

    Thashaina Seraus of Maryland

    Eastern Shore, Daria Kovalova and

    Laura Plazas of Wichita State.

Joining Rollins on the men’s all-

    tournament team were

    McKendree’s Smith and Young,

    followed by AJ Chapman of

Wichita State and Nick Pate of

    Midland.

    7/8

    May 11 - 17, 2016 SPORTS REPORTER 7

    By Bill Vint - PBA

    PORTLAND, Maine – Helped by

the first perfect game in Professional

    Bowlers Association League histo-

    ry, the GoBowling.com Dallas

Strikers advanced to a PBA League

Elias Cup showdown with the 2013

    Elias Cup champion GEICO New

    York City WTT KingPins.

    The semifinal round matches

aired on ESPN, with PBA Hall of

    Famer Pete Weber leading the

KingPins to a dramatic best-of-two-game victory over the hometown-

    favorite Shipyard Brewing Portland

    Lumberjacks while Weber’s long-

time opponent and fellow Hall of

    Famer Norm Duke inspired the

Strikers in their 2-0 sweep of the

    Barbasol Motown Muscle at

    Bayside Bowl.

In the first semifinal match, the

    KingPins, behind Mike Fagan, John

    Szczerbinski, Scott Norton, Weber

    and anchor bowler Marshall Kent,

used superior strike power in the

last half of both games for a 223-

190 and 237-222 sweep of the

    Lumberjacks.

     Norton, after leaving a 4-6-7-8-10

“Greek church” in frame three of

    game one, stabilized the KingPins

with strikes on his next three

    attempts while Kent, PBA’s 2014

Rookie of the Year, delivered in the

fifth and 10th frames of both

    games.

“It was all me; I just threw it bad,”

Norton said of his initial error, “but

I was able to fix the physical mis-

takes the next three shots. The good

thing is, my team was able to pick

me up, which is what it’s all about.”

Kent was the team’s choice to

assume the anchor role from Weber  because his game matched up better

    with the conditions, and he

    embraced the opportunity.

“It feels good the whole team was

     behind the decision,” Kent said.

“We work together so well we

could have put any of our five guys

in that position and we would have

     been comfortable. But I’m kinda

glad it was me. I like being in that

     position.

“The atmosphere is so much fun,”

    the former Robert Morris-Illinois

collegiate star added. “It remindsme a lot of college, with all of the

teams and parents, and it’s loud and

    crazy. I’m actually very comfort-

    able in this atmosphere.”

    In the second semifinal match,

Dallas made history with its 300-

237 romp in game one, with Duke

    completing the perfect game with

three strikes in the 10th frame. In

game two, Duke moved himself to

    leadoff and turned over anchor

    duties to Tommy Jones. The

Strikers fell behind by 37 pins after

five frames on the troublesome left

lane, but when they switched to theright lane to finish the game, Duke,

    BJ Moore, Shawn Maldonado, Bill

O’Neill and Jones ran off a string of

six consecutive strikes for a 215-

204 victory, and the Strikers’ first

trip to the Elias Cup finals.

    “That was mega exciting,” Duke

beamed later. “I can’t even begin to

tell you. I was so worried about get-

ting into a big deficit early, like we

did last week. It seems like the left

lane wants to give you problems if

you want to hook the ball, but it’s

actually my best lane so that’s why I

bowled the 10th in game one and had

Tommy throw the rock in game

    two.”

After starting the first game witheight strikes, Dallas had the game

locked up, but the 300 was still in

     play.

“When Tommy got that strike in

the ninth, he turned around and said,

‘I’m so glad it’s on you (to finish

it)…and that’s what gave me the

strength,” Duke said. “He just put it

on me, like someone gets in your face

and dares you, and that’s what lifted

me to the point I could get it done.”

But the pressure was back on

Jones to rescue his team in the 10th

    frame of game two.

“We were pretty much dead and

     buried through five frames,” Jones

said. “The left lane is okay early,

but once it changes a little bit, it justseems to catch people the wrong

    way. (Motown’s) Josh (Blanchard)

got a terrible break leaving an 8 pin

in the eighth frame, and Anthony

(Simonsen) made a good shot in the

    10th that didn’t carry.

“We were fortunate to throw a

couple of good shots at the end,”

Jones added. “I’m not sure what

Norm’s thinking was. We had just

     bowled 300 and I thought he’d

leave the lineup alone, but he’s the

(manager), he made the choice (to

move me to anchor) and we’re two

for two, so I think we’ll keep going

    with something similar.”

While Dallas has never finishedhigher than fifth place in three pre-

    vious PBA League seasons, the

NYC WTT KingPins won the inau-

gural Elias Cup in Indianapolis in

    2013, with celebrity owner Billie

Jean King in the audience and

Tommy Jones as part of their roster.

Jones, who also helped the Silver

Lake Atom Splitters win the 2014

Elias Cup, will be trying to win the

    PBA League championship for the

third time with his third different

    team.
