MAY ISMental Health Awareness MonthEvery day service members and their fami-lies are affected by the myriad of chal-lenges, stresses and demands on their lives, and every day they seek help in responding to them. This is not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor up-bringing.

Military members and their families are ex-posed to a multitude of stressors on a daily basis as part of a military lifestyle - especial-ly if you factor in the impacts of two recent wars and family separations.

Mental health wellness can be achieved by actively participating in an individual treatment plan. Some of the “big” reasons people come in for counseling are:

1. Feeling overwhelmed by stress2. Marital or relationship issues3. Low self esteem or being non assertive4. Feeling anxious, sad or depressed5. Job dissatisfaction 6. A desire to increase understanding of self 7. Grief / loss or other major life stressors

Although May is Mental Health Awareness Month, the opportunity exists year round to come in to either of the two Behavioral Health Branch offices located at the Marine Corps Air Station and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. If you think you may benefit from consulting with a counselor or therapist please call 228-6126 or 228-2044.

Wellness Links are available on the MCCS website. Apps for smartphones are avail-able for Suicide Prevention and other Well-ness programs and resources on iTunes – see the link on the Behavioral Health Branch page (http://www.mccs-sc.com/support/behavioral.asp)

May is national Melanoma/skin Cancerdetection & Awareness MonthLiving in the Lowcountry, we need to pay attention to our skin. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers yet also the most curable. Each year, over a million new cases are diagnosed in the U.S.. Once a month, take a few moments after your shower and examine your skin from head to toe – even your scalp. Look under your arms, at the soles of your feet, and (using a hand mirror) examine your back, buttocks and the back of your legs.

Look for signs of melanoma in moles:

• ASYMMETRY – one half is unlike the other half• BORDER IRREGULARITY – the border is scalloped, vague or blurred• COLOR VARIES – from one area to another; shades of tan and brown; black; sometimes

white, red or blue• DIAMETER IS LARGER than the diameter of a pencil eraser (6mm).

If you have any doubt about a mole, have your doctor take a look.www.cancer.org

SAFETYsafety can be as fun as you make it

Safety warnings are created because someone has already tried it. Here are some of the funniest we’ve seen lately:

On Odour Eaters: Please do not eat. On a blender: On no account improvise as a fish aquarium. On stockings: Not to be used in the commission of a felony. On a cardboard windshield sun-shade: ‘Warning: Do Not Drive With Sun Shield in Place’. On an infant’s bathtub: Do not throw baby out with bath water.

If you’ve seen others, please take a photo and post it on the MCCS Facebook page. Have fun with safety and others will join in.

15MAY 2010 MCCS HAPPENINGS

LIBRARYnew titles at the Library

Pacific Glory by P.t. deutermann. Mick, Marsh, and Tommy were inseparable during their naval academy years and each was in love with Glory Hawthorne. But they were all forever changed during the war that followed the Pearl Harbor attack. One would die, one would become a hotshot fighter pilot with a drinking problem and a chip on his shoulder, and another would be caught up in the sea drama of Guadalcanal, Midway, and Leyte.

the taliban shuffle by Kim Barker. Kim Bark-er was a war correspondent for the ‘Chicago Tribune’ in the Middle East and Afghanistan following 9/11. She now offers an irresistible, darkly comic immersion in the absurdities of life in a war zone where she spent years do-ing what she refers to as ‘the Taliban shuffle’ between Kabul and Islamabad and exposes the lunacy and incompetence of the govern-ments in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

the Bone yard: A Body Farm novel by Jefferson Bass. Dr. Bill Brockton’s summer becomes busier than usual after a former student, now an agent with the Florida De-partment of Law Enforcement, comes to him for help in identifying a partial skull found in the woods in rural Florida. Their investiga-tion yields a series of shallow graves on the grounds of a former reform school for boys. Did the school practice corporal punishment to the max?

rawhide down: the near Assassination of ronald reagan by del Quentin Wilber. Drawing from exclusive new interviews, Wil-ber tells the story of President Ronald Rea-gan’s close brush with death on March 30, 1981, when a would-be assassin shot him. This is the minute-by-minute story of that day and the man code-named Rawhide who in-spired affection in everyone he met.

Zero day by Mark russinovich. What do mid-air frozen airplane controls, an oil tanker running aground, and an accident at a Mid-west nuclear power plant have in common? At first, they all seem unrelated, but Jeff Aiken, a former government analyst, fears they’re signs of another attack like 9/11. Can he con-vince others and avert an international disas-ter?

Unfamiliar Fishes by Vowell, sarah. Vowell explores the history of Hawaii and explains how it is Manifest Destiny’s plate lunch. It’s a story of cannibalism, incest, massacres, con

men and dreamers, racism, Teddy Roosevelt, Obama, America, opportunistic missionaries, warring whalers, kings and queens, and even lepers.

Instruments of darkness by Imogen rob-ertson. When Harriet Westerman, the mis-tress of a country manor in Sussex, finds the body of a man wearing a ring bearing the Thornleigh Hall crest, she recruits Gabriel Crowther to help her find the killer. That same day Alexander Adams is slain by an unknown killer in London. The connection between the two deaths is soon made and an explosive se-cret is revealed.

then everything Changed: stunning Al-ternate Histories of American Politics by Jeff Greenfield. History turns on a dime. No-where is this truer than in the world of politics and now Greenfield shows just how different events in history might have been for JFK, RFK, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan if specific events in their lives had gone dif-ferently. In this alternate history, Greenfield imagines what might have happened in the political world and the world in general.

Hellhole by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. An-derson. The planet Hellhole is a dumping ground for undesirables, misfits and charla-tans, but also a haven for dreamers and in-dependent pioneers. General Adolphus has turned it into a place of opportunity while he secretly builds alliances with the leaders of the other Deep Zone worlds. No one knows that the planet Hellhole hides an amazing se-cret-- the remnants of an alien civilization lay buried beneath its surface.

Be different: Adventures of a Free-range Aspergian by John elder robison. Robison, who has Asperger’s syndrome, argues that As-perger’s is about difference, not disability. He offers stories from his life and the lives of oth-ers like him to foster a better understanding of people with the syndrome. He also offers advice to other Aspergians, their parents, and educators on how Aspergians can improve communication and social skills that keep them from taking advantage of or recogniz-ing their gifts.

Midsummer Knight’s read

The MCCS Library launches its “Midsum-mer Knight’s Read” summer reading pro-gram 5 June. Over the next two months the library will host a range of free activities for children and adults that encourage and sup-

port a love of reading. Participants can also win prizes for reaching their reading goals.

“We’ve got a great program planned for hav-ing a whale of a good time at both libraries this summer”, said Ms, Rose Krauss, library di-rector. “There are lots of fun events and great prizes for all participants”.

There’s also a serious side to support summer reading. Research has shown that reading over the summer prevents summer learning loss. Some research estimates 50 to 67 per-cent of the achievement gap, for children liv-ing in poverty and for children of color, is the result of summer learning loss.

“Studies also indicate students who read recreationally out-perform those who dont. Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interest, “Ms. Krauss added. “Our libraries are committed to supporting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all our families”.

Registration begins 16 May and continues through the 10 June. To learn more about the summer adventure at the library, please call 228-7682/1672 or email [email protected]

samantha’s Corner

A discovery of Witch-es is set in England, at Oxford University’s Bodleian Library. Diana Bishop is a descendant of Bridget Bishop, the first woman executed during the Salem Witch Trials. Like all her fam-ily, Diana Bishop has magical powers. She is unwilling to use them because of her determination to earn recog-nition due to hard work. It is not until she en-counters Matthew Clairmont, a vampire, that she begins to acknowledge her abilities and learn to control them.

the Aid and Attendance Program

The Veterans Administration offers Aid and Attendance as part of an “Improved Pension” Benefit that is largely unknown. This Im-proved Pension allows Veterans and surviv-ing spouses who require the regular atten-dance of another person to assist in eating, bathing, dressing, undressing, medication dosing, or taking care of the needs of nature, to receive additional monetary benefits. It also includes individuals who are blind or patients in nursing homes due to mental or physical incapacity. Assisted care in an As-sisted Living facility also qualifies.

This most important benefit is overlooked by many families with Veterans or surviving spouses who need additional monies to help care for ailing parents or loved ones. This is a “Pension Benefit” and IS NOT dependent upon service-related injuries for compensa-tion. Aid and Attendance can help pay for care in the home, Nursing Home or Assisted Living facility. A Veteran is eligible for up to $1,632 per month, while a surviving spouse is eligible for up to $1,055 per month. A cou-ple is eligible for up to $1,949 per month.

The Aid and Attendance Benefit is consid-ered to be the third tier of the VA’s Improved Pension. The other two tiers are known as “Basic” and “Housebound”. Each tier has its own level of benefits and qualifications. The

• If you are a court-appointed guardian of the veteran or surviving spouse, a certified copy of the court order of the appointment is re-quired. • Proof of insurance premiums, medications, medical bills or any other medical expenses that are not reimbursed by insurance, Medi-care, or Medicaid. • Physician statement, that includes current diagnosis, medical status, prognosis, name and address, ability to care for self, ability to travel unattended, etc. If you are a veteran in a nursing home, or a family member of a veteran in a nursing home, you will need a Nursing Home Status Statement• Banking information for Direct Deposit of A&A monthly payments (include a voided check). • Employment history (does not apply if you are over 65). • List of all doctors and hospitals visited in the last year.

Once you have this information compiled, you will need to obtain and complete VA Form 21-526 (For Veterans) and/or VA Form 21-534 (For Spouses) for Special Improved benefits with Aid & Attendance.

If you need assistance with filing your paper-work, you can contact the VA, however, be prepared to encounter someone who is not knowledgeable about this benefit and may provide inaccurate information. We encour-age you to explore all the available options and services provided through the VA and service agencies to find the option that’s right for you and your circumstances.

Improved Pension is not a new benefit, and has in fact been an entitlement for 60 years sitting idle while mil-lions have and still are missing out on.

Who is eligible?

Any War-Time Veteran with 90 days of active duty, 1 day beginning or ending during a period of War, is eligible to ap-ply for the Aid & Attendance Improved Pension. A surviv-ing spouse (marriage must have ended due to death of veteran) of a War-Time Veteran may also apply. The individual applying must qualify both medically and financially.

Eligibility must be proven by filing the proper Veterans Application for Pension or Compen-sation. This application will require a copy of DD-214 or separation papers, Medical Evalu-ation from a physician, current medical is-sues, net worth limitations, and net income, along with out-of-pocket Medical Expenses.

How to qualify

To qualify financially, an applicant must have on average less than $80,000 in assets, EX-CLUDING their home and vehicles.

To apply for the Aid & Attendance Improved Pension, you will need the following docu-ments. Prepare these before making your filing:

• Discharge/Separation Papers (DD-214). • Copy of Marriage Certificate and all marital information (surviving spouses only). • Copy of the Death Certificate (surviving spouses only). • Copy of current Social Security Award Let-ter (the letter that Social Security sends at the beginning of the year stating what your monthly amount will be for the following year). • Net Worth information, including bank ac-counts, CDs, Trusts, Stocks, Bonds, Annuities, etc. • Proof of all income from pensions, retire-ment, interest income from investments, an-nuities, etc.
