TreasUry mandaTe: pay TO gO eLeCTrOniC By 1 marCh 2013Every year, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) spends over $2 million dollars printing and mailing checks to the 1 percent of military members, retirees, DoD civilian employees and contractors who haven’t yet made the switch to Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). Each check costs $1.04 while each electronic payment only costs 8 cents. During these difficult economic times, this money could be put to use directly supporting America’s service men and women.

Therefore, the Department of the Treasury has announced that all payments from the federal government must be made electronically and not by paper beginning 1 March 2013. This means most military retirees and annuitants receiving paper checks will be required to sign up for direct deposit. With direct deposit, DFAS sends your payment straight to your bank account. Direct deposit gives you immediate access to your money on pay day, and it eliminates the risk of lost or stolen checks, forged signatures, and identity theft.

If you are one of the few still receiving a check in the mail, DFAS will send you a notice, but you can get ahead of the rush by setting up direct deposit now. There are three ways to start direct deposit. Before you enroll, you’ll need to gather information including your financial institution’s routing transit number and account number. Then do one of the following:

• Send a signed Fast Start Direct Deposit Form to DFAS, U. S. Military Retired Pay, P.O. Box 7130, London, KY 40742-7130• Use your myPay account to set up a direct deposit to your checking or savings account• Or call the DFAS Retired and Annuitant Pay Customer Care Center at 800-321-1080

It can take 30 to 60 days from the day we receive your enrollment for direct deposit to start. If after enrolling you receive a paper check, cash or deposit it as you normally would. The DFAS will send you a notification when they process your enrollment. Please don’t wait for 1 March 2013. Make the switch today! For more information please go to www.dfas.mil/mandatoryeft.html.

deLTa denTaL premiUm ChangeIf you’re enrolled in the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TDRP), you may have noticed a change in your 1 October payment. This change was due to the regularly scheduled annual adjustment in your monthly premiums as established by the TDRP contract. Specific information regarding the annual premium adjustment can be found at www.trdp.org . Enrollees in the Enhanced TDRP can use the website’s Premium Search feature to find out their new monthly premium amount. You can also review your most recent Retiree Account Statement on myPay to see how this change affected your retired pay.

Military spouses now have a new resource for learning how to overcome the challenges of military service. Bonnie Amos, spouse of the Commandant of Marine Corps, Gen. James Amos has established “The First Lady of the Marine Corps Recommended Reading List.”

To make finding this first of its kind in any service collection easier, a new section in Marine Corps Exchange (MCX) main store book department will feature the books. The official launch date for this initiative is 15 October, but due to the limited availability of some titles and limited space at some locations, not all titles will be available at all locations. Requests for large quantities of books for clubs or organizations should be addressed with the local MCX store manager. Marine Corps libraries will also be adding the books to their collections

LIBRARYhero Trees A Hero Tree has been created in each library to honor our Marines. It is still not too late to add your hero’s picture to the trees. Please drop by the library. We will copy your picture and mount it for you or you can add the pictures to the tree yourself. We will supply the yellow ribbons to hang the pictures.

The trees are decorated in white lights and yel-low ribbons. The ornaments provide color. For additional information please read the library section of the September Happenings. Please come by the library in late November to pick up the pictures so that they can be hung at home. During the holiday season when loved ones are separated from their families it has been proven that hanging pictures at home is of great help to the children and caregivers who are not with their loved ones during this special time of year.

Letters to santaBeginning 26 November a mailbox will be placed at each library location for children who would like to write a letter to Santa. Santa has designated our libraries as a special delivery center. Letters are then sent to the North Pole. Please drop your letter in the mailbox by 14 December. Add your child’s name and address because you never know when Santa will have a few minutes to answer letters to “good chil-dren”.

The Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families

DATE: TIME: PLACE: TO SIGN UP:

The holiday season is almost upon us and we at the MCAS Beaufort CDC are preparing in advance to have a gala time with our children and families.

As childcare professionals, we are dedicated to stimulating creativity of the children placed in our care. This creativity, their own unique way of doing things, fuels learning in all aspects of development; how they build in the block center, how they play in housekeeping, how they express themselves in storytelling and through dance and movement.

During a recent event at our facility, the caregivers had an opportunity to express their creativity through the decoration of their classroom doors. This activity produced outstanding works of art and creativity. I was then prompted to ask the staff what creativity meant to them and the responses were equally amazing. Here are some of their responses:

Creativity is:…exploring the mind with possibilities –Charlene H.…being unique and different, thinking outside the box - Heather B.…using one's imagination to create secrets of the mind – Ronnie W.…an outward expression of an inward idea – Abbie K.…one’s own personal style being expressed in an artistic way – Shameka B.…having your own vision of what you are creating – Kayla & Princeetta…is spontaneous – Vivian M.…bringing a vision in your mind to life – Gloria S.

The beauty of creativity is that it can cost nothing. A walk in the park and a few pine cones can become a big project. Let this season and every day awaken the creativity in you.

Credit reports – what are they?A Credit Report (also called credit history) is sim-ply a record of how a consumer has borrowed and repaid debts. With very few exceptions, al-most every adult American has a credit file with the three major national credit bureaus: Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian.

With the increase in identity iheft, it is especially important that all service members/families monitor their credit reports to ensure the accu-racy of the reported credit information.

Each adult American is entitled to a free credit report annually from each one of the before mentioned major national credit bureaus. You can obtain a free copy of all three credit bureaus by going to: www.annualcreditreport.com. You can obtain all three reports at the same time or, better yet, cover yourself for a full 12 months, by alternating the reports every 4 months. For example, a service member could go to www.annualcreditreport.com in January and order the credit report from Trans Union, 4 months later order the Equifax report, and 4 months after ordering the Equifax report, go ahead and order the Experian report – the cycle could then be repeated again in January of the new year.

A word of caution: Do not use any other web-site other than www.annualcreditreport.com. Despite all the television advertising, Free Credit Report.com is not free (nor is CreditKarma): an initial fee is charged and an ongoing fee will be charged until the consumer stops it.

Should any of our service members/family need any help with obtaining their credit re-port or want to discuss any other financial is-sue, they can simply contact one of the Per-sonal Financial Managers: Chuck Mathieu,
