The Christian mission for the world might have been blocked had not the Roman army officer, Cornelius—and later Paul—helped Peter learn that God’s love is not limited to the religious insiders. GOD’S LOVE IS EXPANSIVE

Acts 10:34 reads,”And Peter opened his mouth and said: ‘Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality’”. God used a stranger and a foreigner to teach Peter a difficult lesson. The Christian mission for the world might have been blocked had not the Roman army officer, Cornelius—and later Paul—helped Peter learn that God’s love is not limited to the religious insiders. Nor is it restricted to those who conform to the cultural traditions of the “home” group. The gospel breaks all barriers of race and distance as it works its new way in the world. What do we want most for the world? Certainly justice for those suffering hunger, poverty, and oppression. Will love provoke us to make the sacrificial changes in our lives necessary to work for human good everywhere? Do we not also, and most basically, long for God to be real to every man, woman, and child? When that happens, miracles take place. A fighting love and genuine care takes the place of bitterness and weak sentimentality. Expansive love forms new people who are prepared to work for a new and better world society. May we pray to the Lord Jesus to forgive our ingrown complacency and change us, and through us the world! I hope to see you in worship this coming Sunday morning here at Macedonia. May God continue to bless you and yours always!! In His Love & Peace The Rev. Stephen C. Rust

You asked for it…You got it! This year’s Vacation Bible School will be held Monday, August 8th thru Friday, August the 12th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Plan to visit “Hero HeadQuarters” where we will kick off a great week of discovering God’s unnamed heroes and learn how their small acts became amazing miracles. At HHQ, kids will meet unlikely Bible heroes who are often overlooked. In fact, we don’t know a single one of their names! They were not famous leaders or called by God to perform amazing miracles —

yet their small acts were used by God to do wonderful things! Our week will begin on Monday morning at 9:00. Plan to be greeted by 3 of our very own Super Heroes — Water Woman, Pizza Man and Maintenance Mac! You may think you already know them, but you might be surprised. Super Music, Power Projects and Action Games for all the VBS Super kids. You can register on-line to be a volunteer or participant at www.macedonialutheran.com . Just click VBS. THANK YOU from Joy I have very much appreciated everyone’s support, love and prayers during this time of healing following thyroid surgery. I received radioactive iodine therapy the end of April, which is normal to treat thyroid cancer. During this time, I will be on the sidelines for 2-3 weeks. Thank you for your continued prayers! Pastor and I would also like to thank you for the prayers for our grandbabies, which we are all anxiously awaiting to meet. Mivvi was put on complete bedrest early in April, and we are thankful for each day that the twins get to incubate! The official due date is mid-May, but we anticipate they will make their entrance before that! John and Mivvi appreciate all your prayers and cards that have been sent to them. (Their address is 1720 Ashley Woods Place, Birmingham, AL 35216.) We will always be thankful for the way Macedonia welcomed our family when we moved to Burlington. But we will always be especially thankful for the way you welcomed John when he moved here for his senior year of high school – something few young people want to do.

Please mark your calendars for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive to be held on Saturday, May 14th. This is the largest food drive of the year across the nation. Whether or not you’ve already donated food to our local hunger-relief agencies, it’s critical that you give now. We need to restock the shelves at Loaves and Fishes and other agencies to get them through the tough summer months. Just place your food (as much as possible) by your mailbox on Sat. May 14th, and your letter carrier will pick it up during their regular rounds. If you have a PO Box, you may drop off your food at your local post office during the week before the drive. Thank you, and please give generously. For more info, call Kay Johnson, Local Coordinator, Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive at 226-9995.

The LSA Way Celebrating LSA Sunday 2011 Congregations around the state are invited to join with Lutheran Services for the Aging (LSA) in celebrating LSA Sunday. Typically held on Mother’s Day, which falls this year on Sunday, May 8, LSA Sunday is a time to honor the ministries of LSA and the 1,200 elders LSA serves on a daily basis through its nursing homes, retirement communities, assisted living residences, and adult day services. LSA Sunday is also a wonderful time to honor the older members of your congregation. In addition to celebrating LSA Sunday, the affiliated ministries of LSA celebrate Older Americans Month and National Nursing Home Week, which also take place during the month of May.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “The LSA Way,” which highlights the features that make the ministries of LSA special. LSA offers programs and services that focus on revitalizing the bodies, minds, and spirits of older adults, which means you should not be surprised to see pets, plants, and a children’s playground at some LSA skilled nursing homes, in addition to chaplains and worship centers.

Not to be confused with LSA’s Keeping the Promise capital campaign, which lifts up capital needs and programmatic initiatives, LSA Sunday is an annual celebration that highlights and supports LSA’s ongoing operational services and needs.

We truly appreciate the support of your congregation in our ministry and in the lives of those entrusted to our care. For more information on the ministries of Lutheran Services for the Aging, please visit www.LSANC.net. Did You Know? 45% of Americans paid no federal taxes in 2010! May has five Sundays. The altar paraments will be white every week to celebrate the second through the sixth Sundays of Easter. White is the color of purity and completeness to reinforce the message of joy in our salvation. The ELCA is on facebook. – www.facebook.com/lutherans Lilies are often called the "white-robed apostles of hope". Tradition has it that the beautiful white lilies sprung up where drops of Christ's sweat fell to the ground in his final hours of sorrow. Please take your lily home and plant it outside when the flowers fall off. It will not bloom at Easter, but you will be able to enjoy them in the summer. If you have any ideas for this section of the newsletter, please contact the following members of the “Learn to Communicate Better” committee, Vern Misenheimer, Joan Tolley, Pastor Rust, or Yvonne White.

TAX TIME!

Did you get a refund from the federal or state government? If you are a “gross tither”, meaning you give 10% of your gross income to the church, the point of this article is moot. BUT, if you are not tithing or not giving back to God based on your gross income, please consider giving a portion of your refund back to God. Federal laws require you to pay taxes just like God’s law requires you to give a portion of your income back to Him. There are many arguments about “the portion”. You must give as you are able. Matthew 22:21 - Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

WORSHIP SURVEY In November 2010 the Executive Committee asked that we explore the addition of a contemporary worship service at Macedonia. The Worship and Music Committee has discussed options, and would value input from the congregation. Each confirmed member may submit ONE SURVEY (signing your name is optional). You may put the survey in the offering plate on Sunday morning, bring it to the church office, or mail it to the church. We ask that you do this by May 20. It is our goal to offer two different worship opportunities on Sunday mornings. We will still honor our Lutheran tradition – worship, reading of scripture, preaching, prayer, and celebrating the Lord’s Supper. The style will be different at each of the two Sunday morning services. Please check your age range: ______ 14-18 ______ 18-30 ______ 31-45 ______ 46-65 ______ 66 & over Please check the worship service you usually attend: _____ 8:15 _____ 10:30 How often do you attend worship? _____ Weekly _____Twice a month _____ Once a month _____ I do not attend regularly How long have you attended Macedonia: _____ Less than 3 years _____ 3-10 years _____ More than 10 years There are many ways in which greater variety can be added to our worship. Please look at each of these possibilities and indicate your feelings about each of them: L = I LIKE the possibility! OK = This possibility is OK with me if it is helpful to others. N = I would prefer NOT to have this. _____ I would like more use of contemporary Christian music or praise music _____ I would like a music team that includes a combination of instruments, drums and/or vocalists with piano _____ I prefer the use of the organ every Sunday _____ I prefer a traditional liturgical worship service like we currently use (organ, choirs, liturgy) _____ I prefer an informal worship contemporary experience (no liturgy, Praise Band, variety of instruments, maximum 60 minutes) _____ I prefer blended worship, mixing traditional and contemporary, not just one style _____ I prefer that we keep traditional worship (as we now have) at both services and do a contemporary service once a month at both services We will need to make subtle changes to the worship schedule to accommodate a contemporary service. Mark your first choice for worship times on Sunday morning: _____ 8:30 Contemporary Worship, 9:30 Sunday School, 10:45 Traditional Worship _____ 8:45 Contemporary Worship, 9:45 Sunday School, 11:00 Traditional Worship If you would like to be part of a contemporary music team, please give your name to Joy Rust. _____________________________________ Signature (OPTIONAL)

A NEW MISSION EXPERIENCE!!! As you all know our very own Sepp Helgeson was chosen by the ELCA Global Mission department back in 2009 to serve in their ‘Young Adult in Global Mission’ mission fields. He served for more than a year in Velky Slavkoy, Slovakia working with young men who had been abandoned by their families and Sepp tried to improve their lives in general. Sepp came home to his family in August of 2010 and has been working in Mebane. Several months ago he applied to the ELCA Global Mission department for a teaching position as a missionary anywhere they needed him. Last week Sepp received a call from the ELCA and signed a one year contract to teach English as a second language in of all places, Slovakia. He is extremely excited and we are even more so! He begins this missionary assignment in August of 2011. Sepp will be teaching high school students just before they enter college. He will be under the supervision of the ELCA Global Teach Program. We are humbly proud of this young man who is giving his life to Christ by serving overseas and making a difference in young adult lives! Let’s all keep Sepp in our prayers!!

Know Your Gifts We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

—Romans 12:6-8 As an expression of love, my parents sought to provide equal experiences for their daughters. If I longed for a pair of skis, my sister got skis as well—whether she wanted them or not. In an effort to be fair, our unique gifts were not always discovered. I found myself doing something similar at the gym. I watched others—their speed, incline, size of weights—and measured myself against them. Then it occurred to me: We clearly have different abilities and are working toward different goals. Paul writes in Romans that we have different gifts according to the grace given us. Yet, as leaders, we tend to compare ministries, trying to replicate what others are doing instead of tapping our own particular gifts. Determined, we try harder, only to find ourselves exhausted, frustrated, full of self-doubt and eventually at risk for unhealthy behaviors. Reflect on your God-given gifts, help others identify their gifts, and share them for the one body of Christ.

That it may be well with you!

It’s May; the greatest month of the year! Why is it the greatest? Because it’s my birthday, of course! Not only is it the greatest month, it just MAY be the busiest month of the year between exams, confirmation, talent shows, and fundraising. The youth have a lot to do this month! Before we get to the May schedule let’s take a look back to April. We had a great time serving the congregation with a car wash. Thank you for donating and allowing us to serve you. Our next car wash will be June 4th@Mid Carolina Bank (on the corner of Forestdale & Church Streets). If you would like to help us for our next car wash, we need supplies: buckets, TOWELS, squirt bottles, tire brushes, car washing soap, etc. Those items can be dropped off anytime at Macedonia. We had a lock in over spring break; we tried not to get too out of hand. The children enjoyed the Easter egg hunt, they were so eager to get their hands on all that Easter candy. Below we have this month’s schedule as well as the summer youth schedule. Thank you all for your continued support of the Macedonia youth program, and may the Lord be with you always. Progressive Pocket Change Fundraiser: Got any spare change lying around the house? Have a bowl or jar of pennies or maybe just change randomly spread throughout the house? Well, please bring it in and donate it to help the Macedonia Youth and support their mission trip fund. On each of the following Sundays in May the youth will be collecting your spare change before and after worship. Please bring in the type of coin on the corresponding day. We will do the counting during youth group so there is no need to quantify, just gather up and drop them off. May 1st - Pennies May 8th- Nickels May 15th- Dimes May 22nd- Quarters Macedonia’s Got Talent: We’re having a talent show on May 3rd for Tuesdays Together. Please show up to support all our talented performers. All donations will go to the youth. Dinner starts at 5:45. Youth Group Schedule: There will be no Youth groups on Mother’s Day. Little Luther League’s last meeting will be Sunday May 22nd. We still need a volunteer parent; sign up on the youth wall. If you are interested in volunteering to help or if you would like your child to attend, please sign up on our sign up wall. Macedonian Jerry Tolley will be among seven accomplished sports figures this spring to make up the 2011 class to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Jerry, a celebrated Elon University Head Football Coach, will be enshrined at a ceremony in the North Raleigh Hilton Hotel on May 12 . He won two NAIA National Football Championships during his Elon career. Coach Tolley began his college football coaching career at Elon in 1967 as the defensive coordinator and later as assistant head coach under Shirley “Red” Wilson. When Wilson departed Elon in 1977, Jerry was elevated to Head Football Coach. Under his guidance, Elon amassed a sizzling 49-11-2 record (.806) with four South Atlantic Conference championships and three district titles over five years. Jerry’ teams also advanced to the NAIA Division I playoff berth, but forged a 9-2 and finished No. 6 in the national rankings. Jerry retired from coaching at the top of his game following the 1981 season. For his efforts, Coach Tolley collected many accolades including South Atlantic Conference, district, state, regional, area and National Coach of the Year honors. He also received the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Dwight D. Eisenhower Award and the Eastman Kodak National Collegiate Football Championship Award. While leading the Elon football program, Jerry coached 53 All-South Atlantic Conference Performers—four who achieved South Atlantic Conference MVP status—to go along with 30 All-District honorees, 12 All-State selections and 18 All-Americans. He was inducted into the Elon University Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. Coach Tolley continues to receive honors for his coaching accomplishments. In a private ceremony held in the Governor’s office in 2002, then Gov. Mike Easley presented him with the Laurel Wreath Award, the highest award given for athletic excellence by the State of North Carolina. In a ceremony held in New Orleans in 2003, the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) honored Jerry with its Lifetime Membership Award. At a banquet held in New York City in 2004, The All-American Football Foundation honored him for his long and outstanding contribution to the game of football with its coveted Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2006, Coach Tolley received the Distinguished Service in Sports Award presented by the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame as part of that group’s 2008-09 class. NC Hall of Fame membership is now at 285. Congrats to Jerry and his lovely wife Joanie! We are humbly proud of you both!!
