MAY 2012

Over the years the original meaning and spirit of Memorial Day has faded from the public consciousness. We need to remember with sincere respect those who paid the price for our freedoms; we need to keep in sacred remembrance those who died serving their country. We need to never let them be forgotten. On Memorial Day we need to stop and pay with sincere conviction

our respects for those who died protecting and preserving the free-

doms we enjoy, for we owe those honored dead more than we can

ever repay.

"If it is considered a holiday, why is it so? I consider it to be a na-tional day of mourning. This is how we observe this day in our home. Because of what that day represents the rest of the days of the year are our holidays." -- F L Lloyd West Chester, Pa USA -

In 1915, inspired by the poem

"In Flanders Fields," Moina

Michael replied with her own

poem .

Ms. Michael then conceived of

an idea to wear red poppies on

Memorial day in honor of

those who died serving the na-

tion during war. She was the

first to wear one, and sold pop-

pies to her friends and co-

workers with the money going

to benefit servicemen in need.

Shortly before Memorial Day

in 1922 the VFW became the

first veterans' organization

to nationally sell poppies.

Story of the “Buddy

Poppy” (continued from pg.1)

Around the same year, the

American Legion Auxiliary

adopted the poppy as the organi-

zation's memorial flower and

pledged its use to benefit our ser-

vicemen and their families. To-

day, the poppy continues to pro-

vide a financial and therapeutic

benefit to those hospitalized and

disabled veterans who construct

them, as well as benefiting thou-

sands of other veterans and their

families.

Each nine-piece poppy is made

by veterans for veterans in Aux-

iliary sponsored Poppy Shops

that supplement physical and

psychological therapy needed by

hospitalized and disabled veter-

ans. The Auxiliary provides the

materials and the volunteers.

The veteran makes the poppy

and is paid a small amount for

each painstakingly made flower.

For some it is their only income.

No matter what the cost of main-

taining and supplying the Poppy

Shops, the memorial poppy is

never sold, but given in exchange

for a contribution.
