Bob Mariani - General ManagerLet’s Try This Again

by Bob Mariani You’ve likely heard that the Board has formed a new committee to work on Plan B for the Aquatic & Fitness Center. This com-mittee has been populated with Association

members who opposed the proposed AFC project and members who supported the project. All of these individ-uals have committed to remain open-minded and work together to reach a consensus. As you can imagine, there have been diverse opinions expressed about this committee. Some of our members voiced opposition to pursing a fitness center project at this time. There have been various reasons for taking this position but in general the thought is that too many people are tired of the issue, and there is a need to give the matter a rest so a healing process can take place. On the other hand, I have heard from several Associa-tion members who support the idea of quickly pursuing this issue. Again, the basis for this position is varied yet the general feeling is that having people with very di-verse views regarding the fitness center work together can be a significant step toward not only developing a compromise plan, but also providing a mechanism to-ward healing the community. There’s no doubt that both positions regarding the committee and project have merit, and both should be respected. Please keep in mind that a direction has been taken and a committee comprised of your peers with a wide range of views has been assembled to create what I call a compromise plan. If the Association membership gives this committee support, it is very possible that not only will an acceptable fitness center plan be developed but also an example of how the neighbors can work to-gether to build trust and heal divisiveness.

From The Board of DirectorsOur MISSION as the SCVCAI Board is to lead in main-taining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Vistoso as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are avail-able online and in the SCV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Work Together for a Better Community by Dick Brammell

The community has spoken regard-ing the proposed AFC (Aquatic & Fitness Center). Information presented during the AFC campaign by the residents opposed

to the project stated that they would be supportive of less extensive upgrades. On March 30, the Board held a special study session for interested residents to dis-cuss the future of the fitness center. Those present, expressing various opinions, worked together to agree that we should convene a new committee made up of a new group of individuals, to include members support-ive of and opposed to the prior proposed AFC. They are charged with surveying the homeowners regarding their fitness center vote and views. That information will be used by the committee to work toward the development of a reasonable compromise to upgrade the fitness center. I have high hopes that as a community we can come together on this. Regardless of whether you were de-lighted or disappointed with the outcome of the vote, I think that it is important that we try to come together as soon as possible as a community. I believe that this is important for the future of our community. As we move forward I hope we all try to understand and accept each of our opinions and be open-minded to compromise. This community has a lot to offer and it is important that we have a community that is willing to work together for the betterment of it.

Active Health CommitteeCo-Chairs: David Goodman 818-0324, Judy Bjorling 818-1296 The Active Health Committee is a newly created ser-vice and support SCV committee. The primary pur-pose of the committee is to identify and develop health and wellness programs in conjunction with SCV staff. Recognizing the important role that exercise and nutri-tion play in health and wellness, we will focus on the identification, advocacy and development of programs which promote a healthy, active lifestyle. This will include activities such as assisting in the de-velopment of support groups (please see insert in May Tipster), hosting speakers, demonstrations of active health programs (coming this fall), and suggesting new active health programs for incorporation among our var-ied existing fitness programs. We are now looking into how to encourage residents’ participation such that SCV can be among the most fit communities in America.

ARC Architectural ReviewChair Rodric T. Raynor [email protected] and fourth Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui The ARC would like to encourage home owners to use the resources Sun City Vistoso provides to assist with planning and carrying out new projects and im-provements to homes and yards. You can find referral lists at the monitor’s desk in the Social Hall. These lists are for persons and companies who have done work in our community and should provide references. Talk to neighbors and people whom you trust who have com-pleted similar projects. Once you have selected a pos-sible contractor, check with the BBB, the Arizona state attorney general’s consumer department and other re-sources for past complaints. Be sure to get references and check them out. For special projects, such as solar installations, check with organizations like the South-ern Arizona Solar Standards Board and Tucson Elec-tric Power. Remember cheap is not always the best, and you want to love your project when it is finished. Remember that all exterior projects must conform to Sun City Vistoso standards and be preapproved by the ARC. The ARC approval is separate from an Oro Valley permit. If you have questions, please stop by the Vistoso Center. The ARC is here to help you and our community.

aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitch-en. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard. On March 28 we delivered 500 pounds of aluminum cans which netted the CAC $350. Fiscal year-to-date, we have received a total of $2,917. Our telephone reservation system ends May 1 and resumes in November. Reservations and pickups con-tinue at the Loan Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Although activity is less through the summer, we are still available to meet medical needs or pro-vide equipment for your visitors. CAC thanks Sun City Vistoso residents for their support in recycling aluminum cans and attendance at the Pancake Breakfast in sup-port of our Loan Room.

Mountain Vista Landscape Plan

The Board of Directors approved funding from the Asset Reserve for the Mountain Vista Landscape Up-date project. This three-acre project is part of our twelve-year plan for updating our seventeen acres of common area landscape. The project area runs along the northeast side of Rancho Vistoso beginning at Silverton and ex-tending southeast down and around Vistoso Center. The top priority for this highly visible, image-making area was aesthetic appeal. Secondary objectives in-cluded the selection of low or no supplemental water use native or desert-adapted plants and plants that were low maintenance. The project began in late 2010 with the identification of major design issues. Site visits were made to view the work of potential landscape architects. Over last summer our landscape architect, Kimley-Horn, inventoried the site and then, after two design and review iterations, created the final plan. Santa Rita Landscaping Inc. will install the landscape over the next few months. Any questions about the project can be addressed to Bob Cratty: [email protected].

What Is Fast Approaching? Summer is fast approaching, and we bid farewell to those who leave our community during the upcoming hot months. Remember to have someone look after your home and yard while you are away, even if you are only gone for part of the summer. A messy yard is an indication that you are gone and puts your home and belongings in a possibly unsafe situation. With our summer monsoons, weeds grow in abundance and need to be removed as quickly as possible. With the upcoming summer storms, there are times when it’s necessary to reach homeowners due to roof tile dam-age and/or trees down. Don’t forget to leave your sum-mer address and phone number with Administration should someone need to contact you. Have a great summer knowing that your community and home here will look just as nice when you return as when you left.

Robin Coulter - Assistant ManagerWifi at Catalina Vista

It’s time to celebrate! We have a new amenity in SCV. There is now WiFi service available at Catalina Vista. The ILR classes will use it and, as observed with the instal-

lation in our other facilities, many other uses will be found for the service. What seemed to be a fairly simple project, bringing WiFi to Catalina Vista, turned out to be a long, drawn out project. Early on, it was determined that there wasn’t cable service in the building (who knew?) and it became an undertaking that involved persistence and financial assistance from ILR and CAC to bring it to fruition, but it’s done! So take your iPad or laptop, a cup of coffee and go sit in the Catalina Vista garden or near the fountain, surf and enjoy this new service!

Pam Sarpalius - Programs/Facilities DirectorChanges

I would like to take this time to thank Steph-anie Consalvo for teaching aerobic classes in SCV for twenty years; she has decided to retire. Stephanie will be missed by her

class but you will still see her around the community. I am presently looking for an instructor to replace her. I am busy planning and signing contracts for events next year and getting ready to do performance reviews for the 22 employees under my supervision. Also the summer months allow us time to make changes to furniture and furnishings at the facilities. Since Catalina Vista now has WiFi, we will be looking at adding some outdoor furniture for conversation, relaxing or using your computer.

Jim Cundiff - Community Services This Rumor is Rubbish

There is a rumor in SCV that the Association has a contract with a company that hauls homeowners trash. The Association does not have a contract with any rubbish company; each homeowner is free to contract with whomever they would like to use. The SCV Development Standards do say that “all trash containers shall be covered containers and may be stored on the Lot as to be not visible from Neigh-boring Property or Street. If such trash container is not, or cannot, be stored so as to be not visible from Neighboring Property or Street, then such trash con-tainer must be stored in the garage”.

Buyer Beware Volunteers from SCVCAI provide a valuable refer-ence service for community members who are seek-ing contractors and/or service organizations to help them. Consumer Referral provides information re-lated to a contractor’s insurance, contractor license number, bonding and references of past work here in SCVCAI. For more information and hours of operation please call 917-8079.

Carol Whittels, Library To some people, summer means light, fun, quick and easy reading. To others, it’s time to get involved with something heavy and non-fiction. We have some of each in the library: Pacific Crucible by Ian W. Toll, non-fiction, the most comprehensive book on the war at sea in the Pacific 1941-1942. Appetite for America by Stephen Fried, non-fiction, how visionary businessman Fred Harvey built a rail-road hospitality empire that civilized the Wild West. Island of Vice by Richard Zachs, non-fiction, how Po-lice Commissioner of NYC, Theodore Roosevelt at-tempts to clean up sin-loving New York in the 1890s, a very humorous take on the events of the day. The Shoemaker’s Wife by Adrianna Trigiani, fiction, an immigration story told by one our favorite fiction writers. It’s been some time since she’s produced a substantial novel, this looks like the one. The Good American by Alex George, fiction, just pri-or to the First World War, a young couple migrates from Germany to the United States. Their ship takes them to New Orleans rather than New York. This is a very well-written novel with humor, sadness and tragedy.

Friends of the Library Many thanks to those who bought tickets for the Books and Authors Lunch and the Art Raffle. We ap-preciate the support and the winners in the Art Raffle went home very happy. A reminder: membership in the Friends of the Library expires at the end of June so please rejoin any time now.

Lonnie Davis - Recreation and Fitness Tips for getting more active—and liking it

If you dread working out, it’s time for a mental make-over. Consider physical activity part of your lifestyle in-stead of a bothersome task to check off your “to do” list. There are plenty of ways to make exercise a pleasur-able part of everyday life—here are just a few. Think about activities that you enjoy and how you can incorporate them into an exercise routine. Listen to music while lifting weights. Window shop while walking laps at the mall. Get competitive while playing tennis. Take photographs on a nature hike. Chat with a friend while walking, stretching, or strength training.

Association-Sponsored Fitness: Purchase a punch card from the receptionist in the Administration Office, $12.50/10 classes. You may use this card for all Sun City Vistoso-sponsored fitness classes. It can also be used for your guests. There is a $2 drop-in charge if you do not have a punch card.Cardio Chair Aerobics: Tuesday, Thursday, 10:30-11:30 AM, Catalina Vista.Sunrisers: Low-impact aerobics class: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 7:15-8:15 AM, Auditorium.Sweat Stretch: Tuesday, Thursday, 7:30-9 AM, Audi-torium.Water Aerobics: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9-10 AM, Aquatic & Fitness Center Pool.Zumba: Thursday, 5:15 PM, Auditorium.Personal Trainer: Call Ray Jerkins 219-3561 to make

Kim Griggs - Head Golf Professional I have been noticing a lot of cigarette butts out on the course and in the parking lot areas. Please be courteous and de-posit your cigarettes into your own ash-trays, or the receptacles that are provided for you. We would like to keep Sun City Vistoso as clean and beautiful as pos-

sible. If you haven’t already, please stop by our fully stocked Pro Shop and check out our wide variety of merchan-dise. We have golf clubs (new and used), golf balls, men’s and women’s clothing, animal head covers, sun-glasses, wide-brimmed hats to keep the sun off of your ears and golf shoes. Since the weather is getting nicer and the days are longer, please remember that if you are a walker or a person driving your golf car on the golf course, there will be golfers still out on the golf course. Please yield to the golfers and then proceed after they have hit their shot. This is not only for your safety, but for the golfers to enjoy their paid round of golf. Thank you for your cooperation. Sun City Vistoso Tipster, May 2012 9

Michael Kropf - Superintendent The month of May is a time of change for golf courses in Southwest Arizona. The temperatures start to rise into the 90’s dur-ing the day. The perennial rye grass over-seeded on the tees and fairways is not toler-ant to the high temperatures so it begins to suffer. At the same time the Bermuda grass

starts to grow out of winter dormancy and turns green. In a perfect world the rye grass would die out as the underly-ing Bermuda grass starts to grow resulting in a seamless transition between grasses. However, these new rye grasses are becoming more tolerant to the heat so they don’t die as quickly in May and June. The Bermuda grass is turning green, but the temperatures aren’t high enough to start overtaking the weakened rye grass. The result is a competition between grasses for sunlight, water and nutrients that end up with both grasses suffering which leaves large bare areas. This year the fairways are going to be sprayed with a herbicide to eliminate the rye grass in early May instead of June as in previous years. The two major reasons are to allow the Bermuda grass to recover with less competi-tion, and expose the areas that need to be re-grassed. The areas that need to be re-grassed will then have a full summer to establish instead of just a few weeks. Please be aware that removing the rye grass will be very ugly, but the eventual recovery will provide a healthy stand of grass in the fairways, greens and tees going into next overseed.

Golf AdvisoryPayton Davies Chair 825-5352First Wednesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache The Golf Advisory Committee (GAC) was tasked with finding a way to increase golf revenues with the least im-

pact to the SCV golfing community. Over the last month, the GAC, with input from all the golf club representatives, supports the following recommendation from the SCV Administration regarding tee times. There will be no change Thursday-Sunday. Monday will change from an 11:30 AM shotgun to a tee time day. Course maintenance will be moved to Tuesday morn-ing, with the Ladies 18-Hole Club playing in a shotgun at 11:30 AM during the winter and reverse during summer. Other SCV golfers can join the ladies as they currently do now. The Men’s 18-Hole Club will continue to play in a Wednesday morning shotgun with tee times to follow. These changes will began Monday, April 30.

celebrations & life eVents It is with great sadness, but also great pride and grati-tude to announce that the Seniors for Kids Computer project has been retired. Since 1999 the Seniors for Kids computer project has re-furbished and delivered 851 computers to underprivileged children in the Tucson area. The first computer went out March 15, 1999, and the last one March 22 of this year. Machines have been deliv-ered with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, XP and even a few with Vista. The program was started by Dick Butler and Brian O’Neill at the suggestion of Grant Bergemann, the originator of Seniors for Kids. Over the years four other people have assisted with this project: Marvin Lunsford, a former SCV resident; Don Brohaugh, Dave Warner and Tom Geisler. In the early days we got some really good technical help from Sid Hattox although he did not actually refurbish any machines. A simple thank you doesn’t begin to express the feel-ings of gratitude we feel for these volunteers who spent endless hours on this project.

tHanK you cornerThis section allows residents to express thanks to the community. Ar-ticles should not exceed 50 words and should not contain thanks to specific persons.

The outpouring of support I received with cards, calls, emails and gifts was overwhelming and humbling. I regret not completing the term I was elected to serve. Right or wrong, I made the decision to resign to avoid further com-munity divisiveness, the negative image it would project and the possible cost of a special recall election. Thank you to those who have been so gracious.

Sincerely, Debra Arrett

The Vistoso Cyclists continue riding from Mountain View Plaza every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7:30 AM. Club members Harvey Ferguson and Margie O’Hare completed a three-week, 1000-mile self-contained bike ride from New Orleans, LA to St. Augustine, FL April 8. They rode through rural and coastal Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and across the Florida panhan-dle, ending at the Atlantic Ocean. The weather was good and they only had to ride through one lightning-thunder-rain storm. They said, “We had no mishaps or bike problems, and met many nice people”. This trip was the final leg of the Southern Tier bike route across America that began in San Diego in 2007. They split the ride into four segments: San Diego to Tucson; Tucson to El Paso; El Paso to New Orleans. Previously, Margie and Harv rode the Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico. Their final words, “We’re ready to start taking cruises.”

Lillian Vittenson 825-5522, Eileen Rotman 825-5434 First Monday, 1:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pima

Last month we gave justice, discussion-wise, to the thorny issue of illegal immigration as it affects our near-by border with Mexico. This month we delve into his-tory, mystery and myth revolving around the legend of Dracula. Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian has been glowingly described as “a sumptuous quest-novel with an intelligent woman as protagonist and narrator”. We will be meeting in June and throughout the long, hot summer (in air-conditioned comfort), reading and dissecting selections from a new book list that will be distributed to participants at our meeting in May. The list will also be posted on the bulletin board in the Sun City Vistoso library. New members and guests are always welcome.

Great BooksPres. Syrile Ellison 818-6521October-April, First and third Wednesdays, 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Tohono Shakespeare begins a sonnet with these poetic de-scriptions of lust: “The expense of spirit in a waste of shame/ Is lust in action; and till action, lust/ Is perjured, murderous, bloody, full of blame,/ Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust,/ Enjoy’d no sooner but de-spised straight…” May 2 we complete our season and our reading of The Seven Deadly Sins Sampler with a discussion of lust as portrayed in Nathan Englander’s For the Re-lief of Unbearable Urges with Esther Berlot as our able leader. When we reconvene in October we’ll be consider-ing the selections in Living with the Past available from The Great Books Foundation (www.greatbooks.org) for the amazing price of $5. This collection includes authors as varied as Marcel Proust, Sigmund Freud, David Grossman and Annie Dillard, as well as several poets. Buy now, read ahead and join us next season.

Maria and Mary at the Storyteller workshop

Thanks to Joan Kelley we have a beautiful new set of glaze sam-ples. Old dry and overly wet clay has been re-claimed and Bob Arms has re-pugged it. Free to club members, it is available to the right just in-side the door of the Clay Studio. In exchange, you might want to donate a bowl or two to the Empty Bowls project. The Storyteller Workshop filled quickly and was fun for all attendees. Janice did an outstanding job in presenting the workshop. The participants included their own bits of personality and whimsy to create a diverse set of Storytell-ers. Watch the window at the Clay Studio to see some of these fascinating creations. Joan Brown taught a class on dipping glazes and how to use the Potters’ Choice glazes. Joan Kelley taught a class on using washes and oxides. Both do excellent clay work and are great teachers. Classes were well attended. The next Clay Club meeting will be in the autumn. Watch the Tipster for the date.

Colorado River toads are highly toxic and even deadly to dogs who lick or bite these toads. They appear in great numbers after heavy rains in the late spring and during the summer. If you are concerned about your dog coming in contact with a toad, consider having your dog aversion-trained to keep him from ever approaching a toad. Fido’s Friends will be offering Colorado River toad aversion training by professional trainer Jay Smith in early May. Frank Rose, the featured speaker, presented an informative talk on wildflowers. A big thank you to John and Judy Newton for hosting the event and to their assistants, Jo and Lee Bomar, Arlene and Everett Kuizema, Gail Farinacci and Don Bender. Hiking in the heat? As temperatures warm up, you’ll notice that many hikes are leaving earlier to beat the heat while others are scheduled for cooler climes like Madeira Canyon. Remember to bring plenty of water and electrolytes for those hot days ahead. Nineteen club members will be joining our new vice-president, Gaston Meloche, as he leads a hiking trip in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho from September 6-13. The Sawtooths are considered to be the crown jewel of the Gem State. For more information, contact Gaston @ 638-5404 or [email protected].

Thank you again Doug for all you do for the Strummers. May is a transitional month for our club as our President, Jean James passes the baton to volun-teer Bill Moeller until the fall. Bill will be leading the Strummers during the summer season, which prom-ises to continue with the same honing of our skills and also some new learning experiences. There are some gigs planned for the summer as well. For all of our members, may this be a time when you can di-gest and continue to work on all the lessons learned throughout the fall/winter season and further explore the possibilities of our little four-stringed friend.

BarkcarversKaaren Drent 818-2343Tuesdays, Noon-3 PM and Thursdays, 9 AM-Noon, Craft Complex/Lapidary Barkcarving is a unique and

age-old craft. We harvest what could be seen as scrap wood and turn it into something beau-tiful. The possibilities are as end-less as your imagination. We have a supply of bark and tools, so you can come in and begin a project the first day. Come and be inspired.

Writers ClubAdrian Korpel 818-0544 At present the Writers Club’s only organized activities are in poetry. Please see the Poet’s Corner below. Poets’ CornerSharyn Rafieyan 825-6762Mondays, 9:30-11:30 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui David St. John in a poem simply titled “In the High Coun-try” conveys his obvious pride and palpable joy at being a father while describing the landscape with unexpected and memorable similes: “Some days I am happy to be no one/ The shifting grasses/ In the May winds are miracu-lous enough/ As they ripple through the meadow of lupine/ The field as iridescent as a Renaissance heaven /& do you see that boy with arms raised/ Like one of Raphael’s angels held within/ This hush & this pause & the sky’s la-pis expanse?/ That boy is my son & I am his only father/ Even when I am no one.” Our weekly workshops are meant to help us write poetry that succeeds in the ways that St. John’s does and we are reaching ever higher heights. Newcomers are welcome to join us as we climb.
