Training News Learn how the APPL Training Corps can assist your organization at www.appl.org. APPL traveled to the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA April 10-13 to conduct partnership and fundraising training for representatives of the California state park cooperating associations and their agency partners. Reprising a similar training from March 2012, the sessions focused on building strong partnerships, strategic thinking in tandem, governance of non-profits, revenue development, and fundraising. Feedback for the trainings has been quite positive and with the prospects for APPL continuing the relationship in the future, more concentrated trainings are promising. Following the convention, requests for trainings and consultations are on the rise. If you would like more information on training and capacity building opportunities for your organization, please contact APPL Education Coordinator, Chuck Benjamin, at [email protected] or 301-946-9475 x 225.

Bridge To Tomorrow News APPL’s Bridge to Tomorrow (B2T) program provides young leaders an opportunity to develop their professional network and learn more about public land partnerships.

For the third year in a row APPL is offering a Young Professionals Mentoring Grant of up to $3,000 to fund a project of your design. This is a competitive grant opportunity, which means that while all proposals received will be reviewed, it is likely that only one proposal will be funded. While the donors are open to any proposal you would like to suggest, their preference would be for proposals that seek to mentor one, or a small number of young people, who might be in the next generation of emerging leaders for public lands. Guidelines for the grant as well as the application and budget form are available at www.appl.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3436.

Applications must be submitted to APPL by Friday, May 10 to be considered. If you have any questions, please contact Alex Vidal at [email protected].

NEWSBITS Friends groups, nonprofits, public land managers, scout troops and all those interested in outdoor volunteerism are invited to host an event for National Public Lands Day (NPLD). NPLD's 20th Anniversary national day of service will be held on Saturday, September 28. Register your event today at www.publiclandsday.org. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has gotten a preliminary injunction against the Construct Data/Fair Guide scam that many of APPL’s members and exhibitors have received. The Construct Data/Fair Guide scam involved a Slovakia-based operation, called FAIR Guide, that allegedly tricked small businesses and nonprofits into collecting their information for a free guide, but signing the form commits the organization into paying money, which is irreversible once signed. The FTC is seeking to permanently halt this alleged scam and require the defendants to refund fees. For a full announcement about the injunction, please visit www.ftc.gov/opa/2013/03/fairguide.shtm.

AGENCY NEWS President Obama’s fiscal year 2014 budget request of $11.9 billion for the Department of the Interior has been released. The Budget is online: www.doi.gov/budget. Sally Jewell was sworn in as the 51st Secretary of the Interior on April 12. National Park Service Strategies to strengthen the work of the National Park Service as it prepares for its centennial in 2016 are included in a report that was released last month by the National Park System Advisory Board (NPSAB). The report, Engaging Independent Perspectives for a 21st-Century National Park System, summarizes the board’s recommendations to Director Jarvis for the future in four areas – stewardship, education, relevancy and the National Park Service workforce. The NPSAB consulted with National Park Service employees and more than 100 outside subject matter experts, including scholarly and professional organizations, and private sector representatives. For a copy of the report, visit www.nps.gov/resources/advisoryboardreport.htm. As part of the National Park Service’s mission to tell the full story of America’s history, the Service is releasing the American Latinos and the Making of the United States: A Theme Study. This publication of the National Park System Advisory Board features 17 essays written by nationally recognized scholars addressing the contributions and experiences of American Latinos. It will provide a framework as the Service works with partners and communities around the nation to identify, preserve, and interpret buildings, landscapes, and other sites that tell the story of Latinos in America. The Latino scholars’ panel, in collaboration with the Organization of American Historians, guided the theme study. Funding was made available in part by the American Latino Heritage Fund of the National Park Foundation. American Latinos and the Making of the United States is the latest in a series of more than 65 National Park Service theme studies (see www.nps.gov/nhl/themes/themes-allnew.htm). A link to the theme study and a list of the scholars and essay authors can be found at: www.nps.gov/latino. Last month the National Park Service designated two new national natural landmarks, the Wade Tract Preserve in Thomas County, GA, and Zumwalt Prairie in Wallowa County, OR. In addition to the new designations, an expansion to the boundary of Garden Park Fossil Area National Natural Landmark was also approved. The expanded designation includes five significant quarries highlighting discoveries that include the three most complete Stegosaurus skeletons ever found. Garden Park Fossil Area is located in Fremont County, CO, and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Visit www.nature.nps.gov/nnl/ to learn more about the National Natural Landmarks Program.

National Park Service scientists and managers are taking a close look at the overall condition of the national parks in their care and have begun to report their findings in a series of State of the Park reports. Each park report has a “snapshot” of the status and trends in the condition of its most important resources and values; summarizes and communicates complex scientific, scholarly, and park operations information; highlights the stewardship efforts of park staff to maintain or improve the condition of park resources; and identifies key issues and challenges facing park managers. Reports completed thus far are available online at www.nps.gov/stateoftheparks and on each park’s website. More State of the Park reports are underway and will be available on the website as they are completed. Former Associate Director for Partnerships and Visitor Experience Chris Jarvis passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, April 22nd following a battle with pancreatic cancer. A memorial service and celebration of life will take place on May 9th at the Anaheim Hills Country Club. Additionally, there will be a fund established in Chris’s name called the Chris Jarvi Partnership Scholarship Fund; for those who wish to donate, more details will follow. This fund will provide scholarships to various conferences and trainings that allow the scholarship recipient to meet new partners and expand their network. Before joining the National Park Service, Jarvi served for 22 years as director of community services for the city of Anaheim. Jarvi was recognized with professional honors including an APRS Professional Award for Meritorious Service (1991), a National Recreation and Parks Association Distinguished Fellow Award (1992), and the California Park and Recreation Society's highest recognition, the Fellowship Award (1995). He was named a fellow of the American Academy for Parks and Recreation and received the Academy's distinguished Cornelius Amory Pugsley Award in 2000.

MEMBER NEWS Discover Your Northwest (DYNW) and University of Washington Press have jointly published The Pig War Standoff at Griffin Bay by Mike Vouri, the chief of interpretation and historian for San Juan Island National Historical Park. The book was designed by Ben Nechanicky of DYNW. First published in 1999, Mike Vouri's lively account of the Pig War crisis, when in 1859 Great Britain and the United States almost went to war over the Northwest boundary when an American farmer shot a British pig, has been revised and expanded into a definitive new edition. Additional photographs, maps, and drawings are combined with new material providing fresh insights into the boundary dispute that confounded diplomats of three nations, but never quite descended into a shooting war. Besides the $18.95 paperback distributed by University of Washington Press The Pig War is DYNW’s first Kindle Edition available through Amazon.

Learn more about the print version of the book at www.washington.edu/uwpress/search/books/VOUPIG.html. Information on the EBook may be found at http://amzn.to/11HgU5s. The Mount Rushmore Society presented Mount Rushmore National Memorial Superintendent Cheryl Schreier with a $100,000 sculpture preservation gift in a ceremony on April 24, coinciding with National Park Week. This will be the first of five $100,000 gifts that the Society will give to the park over the next five years to be used specifically for sculpture preservation at the Memorial. The funds are a result of an initial $214,000 bequest from the Betty Nelson, Yankton, SD, estate. The Mount Rushmore Society contributed an additional $200,000 and has managed the fund for its ultimate donation to the National Park Service (NPS). The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) is pleased to welcome their new Executive Director, Margo Carlock. Margo has spent the last 19 years with the Virginia Association of Museums (VAM), where she was Executive Director.
