May 2014 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Steeple Bell I recently came across a list I once had to memorize for a test back in junior high school: the sev- en wonders of the ancient world. I smiled when I realized I had failed to store all seven of them in my long-term memory, but frowned when I discovered that only one of the seven is still even in exist- ence today. The list is as follows: Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Colossus of Rhodes, Lighthouse at Alexandria, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, and Mau- soleum at Halicarnassus. Only the Great Pyramid is still around. I feel sure all seven were breath- taking to behold, but as massive and mighty as they were, these manmade monuments did not withstand the test of time. I sup- pose one could also make a similar list of modern architectural achievements, but they would each suffer the same eventu- al fate: all things made by human hands will eventually crumble. In Mark 13:2, as Jesus responded to His disciples’ awe at the magnificence of the Temple in Jerusalem, He said, “Yes, look at these great buildings. But they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!” He was referring to the future destruction of that Temple by the Roman authori- ties some forty years later. However, Je- sus contrasts the temporary things built by mankind with the permanent things built by God (Matthew 7:24-27). A house built on sand (a human life lived for self alone) will fall, but a house built on rock (a human life that lives for Christ and others) will stand forever. As you and I piece together our lives...if we want to leave behind a legacy that inspires awe and wonder in others...we’ll need to start with Jesus as our cornerstone rock (Mat- thew 21:42). Happy building! – Jim Sunday SERVICES at BUMC 9:00 a.m. The Blend Service 11:00 a.m. Traditional Service 6:00 p.m. Emerge Service

MAY CALENDAR

Dear Church Family, Oh my, what a busy and exciting month April was! I am absolutely blown away by the volunteers, support, and turnout we had for every event/service. We kicked off with our Walk With Jesus Easter Camp, where not only did the kids love it, but the parents were able to enjoy the experience with them. I am extremely grateful for all who helped me pull this day off; I couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you!! We also had our Palm Sunday Processional, Easter Egg Hunt, Maun-dy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday activities that the kids participated in and I think really enjoyed. If you join BUMC Revolution Kidz Facebook page, I have posted pictures of all the fun and excitement! Now for the month of May! We are going to bring the Uptown Art experience, with juice boxes of course, to Revolution Kidz grades 1-4 and our Jr. Youth grades 5-6. It will be on Saturday May 31, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Family Life Center. Kids will get their own canvas with a cross on it to paint, and we will have pizza and a movie while their masterpieces are drying! You can pick up a registration form at the Revolution Kidz check-in station and drop it in my box or go to our church Web site and fill one out there. Remember to have your kids wear old clothes that day, because we will not use smocks! Also, mark on your calendars for VBS: Mega Sports Camp, will be June 23-27 from 9 a.m.-noon. I will have more information in the weeks to come on registration and volunteering! Our theme this year is God’s Game Plan, with the Mega Verse from Jerimiah 29:11. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.” Please begin to pray now for our kids, staff, and volunteers as this will be a busy, exciting, and fun-filled week for all involved. I can’t thank you enough for all the support. It makes my heart happy, happy, happy every time I am with your kiddos! Love, Ms. Danae

Dear Church Family,

A heartfelt thanks to all the ladies in our church who were so kind to me during my illness. I so appreciated all the cards, visits and the delicious meals.

Karen Ilario

Dear Brandenburg Church Friends,

Receiving your gift in the amount of $235 has made our day. We shared our story about the financial needs of many of our residents, and you graciously responded! One hundred percent of your gift to the 2014 “Have a Heart for Seniors” love offering will be used to provide financial aid to our residents who call Wesley Manor “home.” Your generosity and partnership make it possible for us to continue in our mission to serve the needs of our older adults every day of the year.

Our heartfelt thanks and blessings, Jerry L. Hoganson, President Anita H. Kuvin, Vice President, Development Wesley Manor Retirement Community
