May 2013 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Steeple Bell When my parents built a house in the middle of a 22-acre wooded area the year I turned 6, one of the first things I remember learning was how to hunt for wild morel mushrooms. My dad had been taught as a boy the art of hunting morels, then known as “hickory chick- ens” or “dryland fish,” and he sought to pass that knowledge on to my brother and me. Of course, our first lesson in- volved how to distinguish morels from other, similar-looking mushrooms and toadstools that were highly poisonous. Every spring, we went in search of the brown, spongy-top fungi growing per- haps around the roots of large trees, maybe alongside the first green shoots of emerging mayapples, by chance in shady and damp soil previously burned by fire, nearly always partially hidden by the previous autumn’s fall- en leaves. Some years we found plen- ty, some years just a few, some years none at all (morels reproduce by leav- ing behind tiny spores in the soil, and if a spore is able to take root, it takes five years for it to produce another mushroom). My mom knew just how to slice them into sections, soak them in salt water, pat them dry, roll them in corn meal, and fry them in a skillet of hot oil. Some of my fondest family memories are of the four of us sitting down to a steaming platter of morels! Over the years, it has become harder for me to get home in the spring and back in those woods to hunt morels. Though I haven’t enjoyed a lot of success the last couple of years, I still get a thrill each time I spot one of the elusive mushrooms. For me, finding such a fungus, preparing and eating it, calls to mind the Eucharist meal. After all, both are provided for us only after years of preparation and sacrifice. There is certainly a risk factor involved in partak- ing of both these meals. We wrongly as- sume that we ‘find’ or ‘choose’ the meals’ provisions, when in reality it is we who have been ‘found’ and ‘chosen’ by that which was there all along, yet unrecog- nized by us. And both are dining experi- ences best enjoyed with family, those who have taught and been taught by us. Com- ing to the communion table is a “coming home” experience, a reminder each time that our hearts truly hunger for that rar- est of delicacies, God’s only Son. Let Him find you. – Bro. Jim Ghana Presentation Sunday, May 5 8:45 and 11 a.m. worship services Several people have requested a reprise of the Ghana presentation. Dear Church Family, I want to thank each of you for making the Soupfest a success this year and for your support of the Ghana mission group. I also want to thank my Discipleship Team – Judy Applegate, Mary Plemons, and Susan Plemons – and Sandra Stone, Don Martin, Wayne Mar-tin, and Cindy Swanson for their help. I want to thank Kelly Holley and the Youth for filling and hiding the eggs for our annual Easter Egg Hunt. It was a great success. In HIS service. Sharon Martin

Dear BUMC,

Thank you so much for your generous donation. We appreciate being able to learn job skills while helping you out!

To Brandenburg United Methodist Church:

The family of Marvin Elroy Bruington wants to thank our beloved church family for your love and concern during his illness and death. The thoughts, phone calls, visits and prayers were so much appreciated. We could often feel the strength of your prayers and thoughts.

Who else but our wonderful cooks could have prepared and served such a bountiful and delicious meal after the funeral for those who loved Elroy? You are second to none with your love, concern and service.

Elroy Bruington’s Family

We extend our deepest sympathy to Lee and

Patti Klockow and their family in the death of Lee’s mother, JoAnn Klockow, who passed away Friday, April 26.

Deepest sympathy is also extended to Kay Thomas in the death of her sister,

Geneva Teal, who passed away Monday, April 29.

Spotlight on Children’s Ministries– Val Goins

Have you ever wondered why they tell you to put on your oxygen mask first on an airplane be-fore assisting your children? It seems to fly in the face of every instinct I have as a mother; my job is to protect and care for my kids above everything else, right? According to a Google search, “Passen-gers are instructed to do this because the time of useful consciousness after sudden depressurization at high altitudes is only a few seconds, and if par-ents spend those few seconds trying to get masks on their children, both parent and child will pass out before they succeed, and then neither parents nor children will have masks on, and both will risk brain damage from ox-ygen deprivation.” Good to know if you are on an airplane, but how does that ap-ply to our spiritual journeys as parents? Our children watch everything we do but do not always listen to what we say. We must set intentional exam-ples to our children of healthy spiritual living. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 11:1 “Follow my exam-ple as I follow the example of Christ.” One of the strongest testimonies we can ever share with our kids is how we choose to use our time and resourc-es, whether we give them back generously to God

or spend them wastefully and foolishly. When your kids catch you in prayer or Bible study, this teaches them far more about your faith than hours and hours of Sunday School. They will see that you live what you believe, your faith will grow and, as a result,

you can share with them the life giving oxygen of Jesus Christ. When we no longer seek nour-ishment from God’s word, we lose our ability to share His mes-

sage with those who mean the most to us. I challenge you to make time for your personal walk with God this month. Give yourself a pass to be late to soccer just this once and pray for your family as you walk out the door instead of rushing mindlessly through your day. Make opportunities for your family to catch you reading the Bible and use that as a start to real discussion of what God means to you. The church can teach your kids a lot of things about the Bible, but only you can share with them what God means in your life.

Blessed beyond measure by serving your kids, Ms. Val

Help Needed There is a need for a team to take on the task of setting up chairs for the Sunday evening Emerge worship service and another team to stack and store the chairs fol-lowing the service. (A very big “Thank You” to those who have already signed on to help.) Ideally, the setup team would set up on Sunday morning (either after Sunday School or after the 11 a.m. worship service), and the other team would stack and store following the Emerge service or E-groups on Sunday evening. If you are willing to serve on either of these teams, please contact Sandra Stone at the church office (270-422-2810) or e-mail [email protected].
