On the Cover This month’s cover titled, “Dream Girl” by Wayne Miller was the first place

winner of the Portrait category. and Print of the month for the March 2014 PPGBA Image Competition.

Wayne tells us, “This image was created at my studio in Clayton using a four light set up. Two strip boxes at 45deg, rear of subject, one bare bulb reflector on white paper background, and a hexagonal soft box for the main. I also used a small reflector to lighten under her chin and add a slight pop in her eyes. Gear Head info ISO100, 1/100 @ f9 at 80mm on a 24-105 f4 with my Canon 5D mk3.

I had worked with the subject Lyrik once before and her whimsical sprit made her the perfect fit for this personal project. The image below is a pullback shot of the step up with a different theme.”

I am stoked that the judges liked the image as much as I had fun creating it.

The Bulletin 5May 2014

This month the PPGBA board

of directors and officers completed

our yearly planning session. Our

staff came up with great ideas to

benefit our members, to keep them

interested and motivated in their

photographic endeavors.

We’ve also had a couple of great

invitations from Canon and Bay Photo

to participate with them beyond our

normal relationships.

Bay Photo has invited us to tour

their newest facility in Scotts Valley

sometime this summer.

We plan not only to do a shoot in the Santa Cruz area but also make it a fun picnic day with family too! We even thought of having a friendly image competition with the Bay employees doing the judging. I personally want to see how they make their aluminum prints. More details to follow.

The downtown staff of Canon Live Learning of San Francisco found PPGBA on the web and would like to partner with us on a project, like having our image competition in their facility. They were excited and impressed with our activities displayed on our website, thanks to our new webmaster Wayne Miller. Julie Olson, Paul Salcido and Mischa Purcell have also contributed to our ongoing web design by helping Wayne to improve our website appearance and functionality.

Take a look at PPGBA.org. This is one hard working board of directors and officers. They have a can do attitude and take ownership of their assignments to completion.

Our guest speaker this month will be Clay Blackmore, Clay is a Canon Explorer of Light.

That means he is the real deal. I’ve been fortunate to have attended many of Clay’s live seminars. I’ve always walked away with something that I can use. He not only shows his work but also explains his lighting methodology with diagrams and posing setups.

I expect that the room will be filled with Clay Blackmore fans. I hope that we don’t have to turn away anyone at the door. So my recommendation is to show up early and get a choice seat.

Did I mention there is no entrance fee? So invite a friend.

Thank you Canon!!!

Why Participate?Participating in PPA's photographic competitions gives you the opportunity to:· Engage with the passionate and supportive photographic competition community· Improve upon your finest work (You can do that math, right? You'll get better!)· Earn recognition and admiration from your peers· As a result, improve your businessWith most things, you get what you put into it, but with the IPC, it's what you do next that matters. You'll leave with the motivation and inspiration to be more.

So what are you waiting for? Entries for this year's International Photographic Competition will be accepted May 26 - June 26 and the judging will take place August 3-7 at Gwinnett Tech in Lawrenceville, GA. Download the 2014 Photographic Open Rules http://www.ppa.com/files/pdfs/ipc_po_rules2014.pdfDownload the 2014 Master Artist Rules http://www.ppa.com/files/pdfs/ipc_ma_rules2014.pdf For every photo you take, there's a competition to enterReally, there are that many competitions. To help you understand why they are worth your time—and entry fees—see below:· Local Competitions· State Competitions· District Competitions· International Photographic Competition Local CompetitionsNew to the game? Get your feet wet by competing in your PPA affiliated local guilds’ or associations’ competitions. It will help ease your nerves and feel things out. You also score a round of critiquing, increasing your chances for success at the next level. Check theLoop for more advice on entering local competitions.

State CompetitionsCompetition critiques at this level are often held live, providing insight into improving your work. It’s the perfect place to start if you don’t have access to a local guild or association. Check theLoop for more advice on entering state competitions. District CompetitionsThis is your last chance to gather critiques and advice before the International Photographic Competition (IPC). (You’ll want those critiques and advice. Even if getting your work critiqued scares you, the new perspectives are oh so worth it.) PPA members are assigned a district based on where they live (Southwest, Northcentral, Western, Northeast, Southeast and Asia Pacific). Wow them here and you could earn a Seal of Approval. That’s a big deal. PPA's International Photographic Competition (IPC*)And now things are rollin’—you’ve got game, playa! You’re competing with PPA members from across the globe now and this ain’t a competition playground: this level of competition (the IPC) actually involves two judgings. The first one determines if your images are merit-worthy (yeah, that’s industry-speak to say you made the first cut). If they are, you earn a second judging, which could possibly earn you an additional merit and a spot in the Loan Collection (our way of saying that your work is the “best of the best”). Images that earn a Seal of Approval at the district level are also considered for the Loan Collection, and are published in the annual Loan Collection book AND exhibited at Imaging USA. Participating in the IPC can help you earn your PPA degree: earn enough merits and you’ll earn a Master of Photography degree in no time. (See why that’s such a big deal http://www.ppa.com/clientapps/degrees/ )

Photo School Needs HelpPhotographer Brooke Shaden (PPGBA 2012

seminar speaker, and she’ll be back with us this fall!) is doing a big fundraiser to raise money for a photo school in India for survivors of human trafficking.

Brooke tells us:Last year I traveled to Kolkata, India with an

organization called Blossomy that hosts workshops for survivors of human trafficking. I went on a whim, never having been before and new to the cause, with the hope that I would be able to help in some way, big or small. I went home feeling as though I had been changed forever, and wanted to do more.

I was teaching photography to survivors of human trafficking. While I taught the camera basics, we also focused on self-portraiture and the lasting impact of finding self-confidence and understanding that everyone has a story to tell. Something was missing from my experience, and that was a lasting impact that would be able to ripple through more than a small group of women.

With the help of Blossomy and photographer Dave Junion, we want to bring a school of photography to Kolkata, India in which the individuals going through those shelter homes have access to free education in exchange for a certificate in photography as well as the opportunity for a future in a career that can provide confidence and hope.

The school that we propose would be self-sustaining after two years. The way that it works is simple: the school is attached to a fully functioning studio in which the clients that pay for portraits sessions have their money go straight back into the school system, thus providing income for those working in the school as well as those working in the studio.

If a student takes the 5-month course twice, they become eligible to enlist as educators in the school. At that point, they also have the option of working in the studio as a main photographer, retoucher, or manger. Therefore, those were were once students in the school can then filter back through the system to work as a teacher or photographer to help keep the school running.

We are looking for $25,000 to get the school up and running. After two years we do hope for the school to be creating enough income to pay those running it as well as keep it going for years to come, but in the meantime, we need to get things going. This money will go towards rent, educational tools like desks, cameras, laptops, and other necessities, travel expenses, educator payment, and so much more.

I believe that if everyone donated just a single dollar, we could raise enough money to get this school off the ground...and think of how many lives could be changed, or saved, because of it. I am so incredibly passionate about this project and I thank you for taking the time to consider it. I am grateful for you.

If you have a few minutes, please check this fundraiser page to learn more and donate or share if this is something you might be interested in backing.
