Cover Story This month’s cover titled, “Live Fast

Die Young” by Wayne Miller won print of the month in Jan 2014.

Wayne tells us, “The image is a composite from a studio session with Thomas and an HDR image from an Alcatraz cell block.

I have worked with Thomas before and he is great in front of the camera. Matter of fact he was a dancer in Beyonce’s “Super Power” video. Lighting for the techies-Two strip soft boxes 18x60 with grids for the edge lights, 3ft Octobox for the key light and white board reflecting light up under the chin.

The Alcatraz image was captured several years ago in HDR (high Dynamic Range) on a tour with a ton of visitors in the group. I just lagged behind the group and got the shot without people. Bracketed 0, +2, -2 exposures and processed in Photomatix.

The composite was put together in Photoshop with lots of layers, de-saturation and high-pass sharpening to give it that grunge look. I was thrilled that one of the judges challenged the score, and after debate, the final score was even higher. Creating an image that creates a debate is more rewarding than the score itself.”

The Bulletin 5February 2014

If you did not attend January’s guest speaker presentation by Michael Joseph. You missed an informative, as well as an entertaining evening. His live shoot, complete with dog calls and whistles got me to respond with a chuckle. Yes, he also resorted to doggie treats. Special family pet models were provided by members Hanson Fong, and Lori MacIntosh.

Who are your clients today? Are they GenX, GenY, Millennials or Boomers? Who are these people and who created these classifications?

Well a quick Google search and Wiki results came up with a reading list of social scientist renderings and classification of the generational groups in our society. There are many books written on their research and findings.

After much reading, I had to make my own explanation that made sense to me. People of differing age groups or age bands, that through their upbringing, environment, influences and events helped shape their attitudes and outlook to certain values about life, work, behavior, society, etc.

I was brought up in the counter culture revolution of the tumultuous 60’s. Sex, drugs and rock n roll was the mantra. The hippie movement happened down the street on Haight Ashbury. Our values were not our parents; a lot of us were found in Berkeley protesting in People’s Park, Civil Rights, SF State or in Vietnam. We wanted to change the world!

So why perform photography in a cookie cutter fashion. Shouldn’t we approach our photo sessions with these generational differences in mind? During a photo session, put your clients needs above yours while still being creative. Collaborate with them. Sometimes I have to go against my training and bend the rules.

The Demographics of photography have and are changing. At Imaging 2014, there were well attended seminars in the latest lighting techniques, products and software. Some presenters were seasoned veterans in contrast, the well attended ones were providing a leading edge into the art of photography. I came away with the feeling that the business of photography is changing and I should be changing with it.

Your President,

President’s Message

Board ReportDown time can be terrible for any busi-

ness. When it’s slow and the phone is not ringing like it should, you can feel like ev-erything is going from bad to worse.

When this happens to me, I always feel

that it’s time to re-evaluate what I’m doing and how the industry is doing. Is it my fault business is slow? Has the industry changed around me? It’s so easy to blame the econ-omy for every slump and slow time in our businesses, but is that really the reason?

In every type of economy and during

nearly every time in our history someone was clever enough to find a way to make a living. For me and my business, I feel that I am totally 100% responsible for its growth and/or failure. If business is slow, it’s my fault for not predicting it and being ready. If sales are down, it’s my fault and I need to solve the problem, which I know is easier said than done! I know, believe me.

After 20+ years in this business I have

seen a lot of changes and have witnessed many businesses come and go. In my own business, we have re-invented ourselves at least 5 times in the last 20 years. That in-cludes how we sell, what lab we use, em-bracing digital, how we dress, and how we market. If we were operating as we did 10 years ago, I believe that I would not be here writing this message after just having come out of one of our best years ever.

Yes, the economy can have an effect on your business and it always will. Yes, new competition or technology you resist will have an impact. It’s up to you whether the impact will be positive or negative. I want to encourage you to take control. Get out there and drive your business to be successful. Ultimately it’s up to you and you alone.

I would like to end with a few bits of

advice. While driving your business and looking to build a long term career, keep this in mind: be “respectful” and “account-able”. Respectful in that you treat people with kindness and leave a gentle impres-sion. Accountable in a way that you fulfill your promises and stand behind your work. Failing in either can and often does have a negative impact on the success of a business.

Whether you think you can or whether

you think you can’t, you’re right! – Henry Ford
