ReSoLuTIOnS! The beginning of the year means new starts and resolutions right? Well, a majority of resolu-tions involve some sort of diet-ing or exercise goal, and if we’re being honest humans we aren’t renowned for our incredible will power. With three holidays, (four if you count New Year’s itself) how well are people really going to do sticking to those resolutions? It makes so much more sense for the time after Easter to be used for resolutions and renewal.

Free Coalition wants to en-courage parents to learn more about the signs of teen depres-sion and the risk of related substance abuse. It’s not unusual for teens to feel “stressed out” or “down”. The many physical, emotional and social changes that occur in adolescence can make life diffi-cult for teens and their parents. Unrealistic expectations around academics, athletics, relation-ships or appearance can make matters worse. Often it is difficult to know the difference between “normal” adolescent mood changes and depression. About 1 in 5 teens has suffered with depression at some point. But many de-pressed teens do not get the right treatment. When depres-sion goes on untreated the out-come may become very seri-ous. Softball Article by: Bethany S.

The middle school softball team is new this year. It is coached by Andy W. and assisted by Craig R. The players (the majority of the team are travel ball players) include myself (Pitcher/Outfield), Madison W (Pitcher and First base), Abby D (Shortstop), Maddison R (Third base), Kennedy R (Catcher), Morgan T (Catcher/Outfield), Allyiah N (Catcher/Out-field), Kori M (First/outfield), Jose D (Pitcher/Second base), Lissie M (Outfield), Grace M (Outfield), and Kallie P (Second/Outfield).

The team is a club team, not sanctioned. It is not actually through the school. Our op-ponents included Cardington, Northmor, Bucyrus, Elgin, River Valley, and Galion. We have won against every team, but lost to Cardington the second time we played them. In the end, we had a record of 11-1. We scored a total of 149 runs and gave up 27, outscoring our opponents by 122 runs. Hope-fully, they will have a team next year.

Finishing Strong by Kayla K. The NUMS Track team finished its season with a bang. They recently competed in a meet at Elgin on April 21 and here at home on April 17. The Elgin meet had the following teams: Elgin, Mt. Gilead, Jonathan Alder, and North Union. At Elgin, the Lady Cats took home first place in the meet overall, with the boys not far behind in second. They took home multiple first place awards in hurdles, distance, re-lays, and sprints. The N.U. meet had the following teams: Northwestern Christian, Mt. Gilead, Pleasant, Fairbanks, and North Union. They did pretty well at their home meet with a couple first place winners and multiple third place winners. At the COAL meet, (Central Ohio Athletic League) the girls brought home second place and the boys received 5th out of 15 teams. There were also two individual winners; Paxon S. and Kyle W. What a great way to end the season. Go Cats!

Step 1. Collect the bottoms of plastic Eas-ter eggs, one top of an egg and one whole egg. (Multiple colors are optional)

Step 2. Next poke holes in the center of the bottom of each egg.

Step 3. Then, get a red strand of yarn and tie a knot at the end of it. (You may want a long strand of yarn)

Step 4. After that, pull the strand of yarn through the holes in the eggs. (Make sure the eggs are facing the same way and put the top half of the egg at the end where you pull the string through)

Step 5. Next, tie a knot on the other end of the eggs and cut off the excess yarn. (Put the whole egg on the other end of the snake’s body and face it tip out.

Step 6. Finally, draw a face of a snake on the side where you left yarn as the tongue and you’re finished!

It should look like this when you’re done. Submitted by: Sabrina Q.

Did You Know?

The 2012 Youth Risk Behavior Survey con-ducted among students at Marysville, North Union and Fairbanks Local Schools indicated that 41% of Union County youth in 7th, 9th and 11th grades reported moderate to high risk of experiencing depression. Even more concern-ing, 18.4% of those surveyed reported having thoughts of suicide. In order to feel better, some teens may experi-ment with alcohol, drugs or become involved in unhealthy relationships as a coping mechanism. As a result they can put themselves more at risk for problems with alcohol and other drugs. Teens have an over-active impulse to seek plea-sure and less ability to consider the consequenc-es. Nearly one-third of people with major depres-sion also have an alcohol problem, according to one major study conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. In many cases, depression may be the first to occur. Research shows that children who are depressed are more prone to develop alcohol problems once they reach adolescence. Teens that’ve had an episode of major depression are twice as likely as those who aren’t depressed to start drinking alcohol.

Depression may be a particularly significant trigger for alcohol use in females, who are more than twice as likely to start drinking heavily if they have a history of depression.

Symptoms of Teen Depression On-going sadness for no apparent reason is the most com-mon sign of depression. Yet, teens with depression may have signs of extreme irritability, anger, or anxiety instead.Depressed teens often have physical complaints, such as stomachaches or headaches. These symptoms may cause absences from school or poor school performance. Teens with depression may have changes in sleep habits with unexplained crying. They may become extremely sen-

April & May: The Beginning of Allergy Season

Written by Kayla K.

April and May are the beginning of allergy season. Sure, there are rain-storms, flowers and nice weather, but

there is also a lot of sneezing. It is pretty hard to stop a sneeze after it has begun, but you can redirect it from your computer and neighbors. If you sneeze on your computer, it would be a good idea to clean your computer. Here are instructions to clean your laptop at home:

1. Turn your laptop completely off and unplug any devices2. To clean the keyboard, use a soft brush to get rid of any dust3. To clean the outer casing, take elec-tronic cleaner, spray it on a soft rag, and wipe down the outer casingAny serious cleaning should be done by a professional, but these steps are easy and can be done in a snap!

So as many of you know, we (Miranda & Alexis) are really into social media. We have a lot of online creators that we watch, most of which are youtubers; Including Tyler Oak-ley. Let me start off with saying that Tyler is one of the most recognizable people on Youtube, with over 3 million subscribers, he is in the Top 100 most subscribed channels overall on YouTube. Tyler is a video blogger and is an advocate and member of the LGBT com-munity. He started making videos back in 2007, and has raised over $530,000 for The Trevor Project, which is an organiza-tion for struggling LGBTQ youth. Tyler him-self is a very humorous and kind person, and is very entertaining to watch while he does Q&A’s every Tuesday and an original video every Friday. He is also a host for Top That, a weekly pop culture series in where they do challenges, tips, or just talk about news happening. He has done inter-views for Kids and Teen Choice Awards, as well as interviewing One Direction multiple times in his career! He’s had the oppour-tunity to appear at conventions such as Playlist Live, Vidcon, ITAtube and a ton of others. All in all, Tyler Oakley is a pretty cool and pretty chill person. I mean, he’s practically the Beyonce of YouTube (along with his friend Troye Sivan). You should totally follow him on Twitter (@tyleroak-ley) as he tweets updates about his videos and his life daily, and, I mean, he’s ador-able and hilarious. Also, Subscribe to his YouTube, which is just named Tyler Oakley. - Miranda R

How You Can Help Teens need their parent’s guidance more than ever to understand all the emotional and physical changes they are going through.

• Talk & Listen to your teen about their feelings and what is stressful to them.

• Don’t Judge, remember your teen’s feelings are very real to them at the time.

• Share your observations and concerns as a way to open the door to further conversation.

• Lead by example to show your child how to re-lieve stress without using alcohol or other drugs.

• Get Professional Help if their depression seems to be getting worse

• Be aware if you have a family history of depres-sion or addiction.

Spring is a time of inspiring growth and life. There also aren’t that many major candy based holidays

between Easter and Christmas. It may be a shorter time but I do believe more peo-ple would be able to stick to their resolu-tions and possibly have enough will pow-er by the Christmas season to be able to continue them through the next year. The weather may also play a part. Naturally or at least in my opinion it is easier to be outside and physically active in the warm spring air rather than in the bitter cold of January. The beauty of spring may very well be that extra motivation needed to stick to your goals. By Anna A.
