Governor during this year has been nothing short of phenomenal. She has visited all of the clubs in Division 1 multiple times. The interclubs have increased and Kiwanis members of Division 1 are getting to better know each other. Communication and knowledge sharing between clubs and members of Division 1 has increased and most of that is due to the dedication and hard work of Marian. Marian - we salute you for your efforts as Lt. Governor of Division 1! Keep in mind that “Serving the Children of the World” is our motto and we should be looking for opportunities for service. Have an idea about how to improve our existing projects? Have an idea about new projects? Don't be shy, speak up and let us from you. Contact Marian, Barbara Jean Johnson (our public relations chair) or me about your ideas. By the way, we had a great time at Gleaners Food Bank on May 2nd helping out with pulling orders for various agencies that distribute the food. Thanks to Jeremy Cnudde and Lynn Kleiman for their service on the Kiwanis No.1 Board of Directors. They have both decided not to run for reelection to a Board seat. Spring is finally here. Enjoy the weather and the yard work too! Eric, Your President

CLUB MEETINGS We’ve had some dynamic speakers with more to come! Be sure to let Lucas know if you are coming so he can give the DAC an accurate head count: [email protected]. April 21st: Meagan Dunn, Director of Community Outreach and Partnerships, Henry Ford Health Systems, shared Henry Ford’s investment plans for the community surrounding the hospital. She highlighted the community partnerships developed over the past few years and how that work has strengthened the hospital’s commitment to local residents.

May 5th: Therese Quattrociocchi-Longe from Children’s Hospital provided updates of the Children’s Hospital Foundation including expanded art therapy programming and other support services for children and their families. Our club has been a long-time supporter of the hospital through our club’s foundtion and other fundraising activities.

Upcoming Speakers May 19th: Cindy McCann-Clissold, Michigan Business Professional Association

INTERCLUB OPPORTUNITIES Lieutenant Governor, Marian O’Higgins has worked hard to organize throughout our division. Not only was this a great way to meet other Kiwanians and hear what they are doing during their meetings, we earn extra points! April 9th: Warren. Thanks to Marian O’Higgins, Jeanette Harris, Sheila Connolly and Kimme Reed for attending – showing Detroit No. 1 is out and about and getting us some additional brownie points. April 14th: Aktion Club was another opportunity for an interclub. Marian O’Higgins, Patti DeCarlo, Jeanette Harris and Chris King were there to help Aktion club members practice their entertainment for the upcoming Michigan District Convention.

Frankie loves practicing!

Marian also installed five new club members. When asked why they wanted to join they answered: “fun and service!”

Newest members – welcome!

April 16: Cosmopolitan. Beverly Wiggins, Jeanette Harris and Marian O’Higgins attended the meeting – not quite enough for an interclub but everyone had a good time.

Look at all that exuberance!

Eastpointe Club meeting – great pizza!

UPCOMING MICHIGAN DISTRICT CONVENTION Put August 28 - 30th on your calendar for the 2015 Michigan District Convention. This year we will be at the Detroit Marriott Ren Cen (where we hosted the 100th Birthday Party). There will be lots of new and innovative workshops different from what you saw in the past. Social events include a Friday evening cruise on the Diamond Jack and entertainment at Saturday night’s Governor’s dinner. Registration details are still being worked on but we’ll let you know the minute they are available. Hope to see you there!

DIVISIONAL PICNIC

Save the date! Marian O’Higgins is organizing a Division 1 picnic and we hope to have folks from all eight clubs in attendance: Where: Belle Isle When: September 13th Time: 12 Noon ‘til? Everyone is invited – bring your family and friends along with your own burgers/hot dogs and a dish to pass. It will be a great way to end summer and meet new friends while visiting with those you know. More details later as to location within the park.

101st Birthday Party Although it seems as if we just celebrated our 100th birthday, it is never too soon to start planning for next year’s celebration. We want to thank Eric Sabree for his wonderful leadership to pull together the past two (!!) parties, including the spectacular event we had in January. Marian O’Higgins will be chairing the next party planning committee so look for her to be reaching out soon as she builds the party committee.

books for kids The project is on hiatus right now. Many of you know that the Lentines’ warehouse has been the site for the project since its inception. Their business is growing in leaps and bounds (good for them!) but it means we have to find another place to serve as a warehouse and distribution center. There is a committee working on this and we hope to have something to report in the near future. The project is NOT going away – just transitioning. In the meantime, we are still getting books to where they are the most needed. Karen Palka and a team will be taking Spanish books to children in Camotán, Guatemala later this summer.

Michigan Key Leader Camp April 24 – 26 was an exciting weekend for this year’s Key Leader Camp held in Grass Lake, Michigan. Almost 60 students from around the state participated in sessions focusing on excellence, responsibility, community and service. The young adults (ages 14 -18) also participated in an initiative course learning strengths of leadership and team strategies while having fun. A special thank you to the 12 member adult team who volunteered their time to make this weekend a success. Marian O'Higgins is the Chair and Gloria

DOING SERVICE On May 2nd, Detroit No 1 members Kris Miranne, Jeanette Harris, Marian O’Higgins, Eric Sabree and Karen Walker were joined by family members and friends for a volunteer morning at Gleaners Food Bank. Our Kiwanis team packaged over 3000 pounds of food to be distributed throughout metro Detroit! Kris, daughter Johanna and grandsons Caleb and Desmond worked with another team that packaged 1200 pounds of fresh green beans and 1500 pounds of fresh beets. A great time had by all (and we only had to give up a Saturday morning to serve!). We are in the process of setting this up as a regular service opportunity – likely to be one Saturday morning per quarter. Look for further details as we finalize arrangements.

Look at Karen Walker handling that equipment – she knew exactly how to move that inventory!

What a great group!

MICHIGAN DISTRICT CHAIR TRAINING On May 9th, the Michigan District held an all-day training to prepare for 2015/2016. Marian O’Higgins attended as Chair of Key Leader. We know she’ll keep us in the loop as planning moves forward for an even stronger next year.

Paying close attention

Not all hard work! Great group of leaders

AKTION CLUB NEWS

Eliminate – Kiwanis Club No.1 is more than a party and lunch club! We are saving lives!!! Kiwanis No.1 continues to be the leader in Division 1 with donations and pledges to the Eliminate Project. As of this writing, $30,066.45 has been pledged/donated to the Eliminate Project by our club. That is 71% of our goal. More importantly, 16,703 lives have been saved/protected as a result of your generosity. If you have not had the opportunity to give or make a pledge, it is not too late. Mothers and their unborn children need our help. Massive infusions of your cash aren’t needed. If every member, who has not made a donation, would pledge a few cents a day over a five year period, our Club goal would be met. If you pledge now, you still have five full years to complete the pledge. Aren’t these children worth a few cents a day? I hate to be crass, but the $75 I spent for the birthday party ticket would have protected 42 lives. A $500 pledge over five years is 27 cents a day. Think about it and sign a pledge form.

And if you don’t think your efforts count, here is a letter from Randy DeLay: “I have wonderful news to share with you. Today

we received notice that the World Health

Organization has validated Mauritania as having

eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus!

Thanks to the generosity of Kiwanians worldwide,

UNICEF and all of the partners, 36 countries have

now officially declared victory over the pain and

suffering of MNT. We are changing the world.”
