Dear Wolseley Families, I recently heard a speaker who asked “Who is telling your story?” To give you some context the speaker was talking about the role social media plays in today’s society. There are so many amazing things happening daily in our school and we need those stories to be told to our parents, alumni and the community as a whole. Our school has embraced this philosophy and it has been met with great success and positive feedback from our parent group. In order to connect with everyone we are available on several sites. If you are looking for us- here are our “pages”. We are working to add these links to our website homepage. Twitter: https://twitter.com/wolseleywolves Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WolseleySchool Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wolseleywolves/ Blog: Life in the Wolf Den: http://wolseleywolves.edublogs.org/

April was a very busy month- we have had students participating in Science Fair, Honour Choir, Recorder Club, Running Club, Ultimate Club and Circus club. Thank you to our staff members and parent volunteers for supporting these initiatives at school and at home!

A huge thank you to our staff and parent volunteers who helped students make “Pizza from our Garden”. Pizza sauce was made from the tomatoes from our Peace Garden, and each student made their own mini pizza. In all we collected $150 for our Plan Canada Fundraiser to support schools in Africa. Plan Canada even recognized our efforts on Twitter!

This month we will be rehearsing our process for lockdowns. Just like fire drills, we need to

prepare in case of an emergency. We will practice this three times, in accordance with school

division policy. Now that the warm weather is upon us we will also be practising our evacuation drill.

In this drill we will walk to the Real Estate board on Portage. I will let you know the date as we are

just confirming dates with our contacts there.

Room 17 AM N/K

Hello from room 17. We have been reading books written by Laura Numeroff (If you give a Pig a Pancake) we have been fortunate enough to have connected with her over twitter and had the pleasure of a back and forth conversation with her. We are learning about birds and have had a wide range of activities and centers to investigate and explore. We are learning about all of the different purposes of feathers from repelling water to attracting mates and many other purposes. We have made birds and feathers in many ways from Lego, watercolors, pastels and dominoes. We have also been lucky enough to have Robin join us for some mindfulness exercises in the morning, they are loving it! We have also been planting some seeds for our garden box.

We are learning about our community, and our rights and responsibilities. We celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up the litter in the school yard. The students made posters encouraging others to take positive action too. We held a march down to Portage Avenue and got a very positive response from people passing by. We had a visit from Noelle, who told us about Wolseley Family Place, which helps families in our neighbourhood. We are inviting Wolseley School Families to bring in a donation for Wolseley Family Place. They would appreciate donations of gently used books, toys and clothing for young children, diapers, and non-perishable food items, especially proteins like canned fish, and baby formula. For more info go to wolseleyfamilyplace.com

We are also investigating what life was like 95 years ago when Wolseley School was built, and inventions that have changed our lifestyle since that time. Students will share about their family's heritage and traditions. We learned about a classmate's visit to Japan. We saw photos of build-ings, food and traditional clothing. We folded origami hats and got to eat sushi! Lora Schroeder

On “Design Day” the students worked together in teams to build structures.

This month we started with a mini unit on position and motion. This included learning about the effects of push and pull, the use of inclined planes and how friction is applied in everyday life. For example, sand on ice. Mrs. Wedlake returned to help out with our aboriginal art. We looked at the cultural diversity in Canada, by talking about Aboriginals and our immigrant ancestors. Each student is doing a short presentation about their ancestors and the kinds of things typical of the country that they came from. What became evident as we talked, was how differ-ent life was for our ancestors. For example, air-planes were not invented, or electricity was not available which had many implications we discovered. Many questions were raised. As a result we talked about then and now in terms of transporta-tion, recreation, shelter, food etc. The discussions that came up were thought provoking. We continue to do lots of great writing every day. At the moment we are focusing on clarity of writing. For example, each child wrote about how to do something. Some choices were how to play 4 square, set a table, and how to prepare for a lemonade stand. Otherwise math varies between tens and ones and decimals. We are working on math strategies as well. Our student teacher Katie will continue to be with us until mid May.

In Room 3 we are continuing our study on First Peoples prior to European contact. Students are creating information books on the computer to show what they have learned. Check out our bul-letin board in the hallway to see the art pieces that were created, inspired by traditional west coast Haida art. We had fun making and eating pizza during our pizza fundraiser week and it was excit-ing to see the donations come in for the Plan Canada fundraiser. We also learned a little bit about our Manitoba election and candidates and again participated in the Student Vote. Stu-dents also had a chance to vote for their favourite MYRCA (Manitoba Young Reader's Choice Awards) from this year. There was an outstanding number of MYRCA readers this year from Room 3 & 10! Way to go readers!!! We just found out the winner is "The Boundless" by Kenneth Oppel! Currently we are reading and responding to the book "Schooled" by Gordon Korman which was a MYRCA honor book in 2009.

In science this term we have investigated the planets, stars, and mythologies (Greek & Roman) that persist to this day. The night sky was integral to ancient cultures for navigation and the formation of the scientific method (hypothesis, method, observation and conclusion). In math, we have been working with geometry while brush-ing up on operations involving decimals, fractions and percentages. Solar system work has allowed us to include information about scientific notation when dealing with extremely large numbers in both math and science.

April in Room 8. We had 5 birthdays this month in our classroom. We got to eat cupcakes a few times. We have started using Green screen with Sean. Some people pretended they were in an explosion. Some people got to pretend they were near a volcano. Using the green screen is fun and helps us use our imaginations. Devin was our student teacher this year and he had his last day this month. It was sad to say goodbye to him. He is AWESOME!

We are learning about handwriting and people are getting good at it. We are working on a big project about personal stories. We will be turning them into picture books. We got a new student named Nevada. We wish he would be here every day. Division is our big topic in math these days. Division means breaking a bigger number into smaller groups. It's like saying 10 how many 5's? Room 8 continues to be busy. We're happy about spring weather finally arriving. Ultimate Frisbee is amazing! By room 8 students with a little help from Jill.

April has been an exciting learning time in Room 9. We are currently learning about structures. We have had classroom challenges where we learned about students who had to zip line to school in Columbia and we designed model bridges as a safer (but maybe not as much fun) route to school. We have been looking and sketching some of the structures in our community, like the walking/ train bridge by Oman’s Creek. We have also begun to learn more about Canada and specifically Manitoba. We are taking on the Geography of Manitoba as well as learning about Residential schools and Treaties. We have been reading When I Was Eight and Kookum’s Red Shoes to give us examples of children our age going to school and living away from their families. It is really hard for us to imagine! We are always looking for real life connections, because living knowledge is so valuable and sometimes hard to find, please share with us. Our classroom is also on Twitter and we “Tweet” daily the types of learning we feel we would like to share. If you would like to follow us we are @WolseleyRoom9. We do screen our followers as part of our learning about digital citizenship and safety. If you would like to follow us and we don’t know you by your Twitter handle, kindly let Janet or any students know so we can include you in our learning community!

In Science, we are studying flight and the forces that impact flying objects as well as important vocabulary about flight. In Social Studies, students will start their own inquiry seeing themselves as explorers and what parts of the world they wish to explore. Eventually, we’d like to integrate the Science and Social Studies themes into one super-theme that looks at exploring different parts of the world. In Language Arts, our reading and writing workshops will continue into the month of May and beyond. We are currently reading Walking Home as a class and students are providing reading responses on a regular basis. In spelling, we’re working on homophones, followed with a look at suffixes and prefixes. In Art, students are creating Canadian landscapes, and to be followed with more technology-based work such as green-screening.

It continues to be busy in the computer lab and library. The grade 1/2 classes have been learning to use the internet independently and had some fun editing pictures. They also have been trying some tangram puzzles online. The 3/4 classes have been busy learning to use the green screen to make how to videos and trailers for stories they wrote. The 5/6s finished up a huge project creating promotional videos for different regions in Canada and are now learning how to spice up some of their non-fiction work on publisher. In the library we have a ton of new books, fiction and non-fiction. Some classrooms have also started using the maker space tools we now have. This has given them the chance to explore and try something new such as building with straws and connectors, K’Nex, origami and to create circuits. Lastly thank you to those who stopped by and supported the library during the book sale. Sean Free

April didn't just bring showers - it also brought a tricky, fun cat to Room 21 Language Group. Dr. Seuss has been our theme and the 'Cat in the Hat' started us off with lots of rhyming fun, crafts and games. The students made their own 'Cat in the Hat' hat and had opportunities to get into their own fun playing silly games just like the cat. They even had the chance to make and eat a special 'Cat in the Hat' hat - yummy! This led to fish - 'One fish two fish red fish blue fish'. Again lots of opportunities to have fun with words and play and eat our way through fun activities of counting, sorting and tossing fish. The month ended with making and being able to eat our own fish aquarium. The younger group has started to work on a spring theme looking at what bugs come out in the spring. The students are looking at different books about bugs, watching bug videos and even singing and dancing to bug songs. Lots of crafts will be decorating our room in the next few weeks!

All the links below can be shared and we are ensuring that children’s privacy is a priority so faces and personal details will not be posted. Children will be contributing to these networks and have had a lot of fun with it already. Twitter: https://twitter.com/wolseleywolves Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wolseleywolves/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WolseleySchool Blog: Life in the Wolf Den: http://wolseleywolves.edublogs.org/ PEACE GARDEN UPDATE Thank you Wolseley School Parents for your huge support of our Glenlea Fundraiser and Plant Sponsorship. Our profit was $1101.19 from Glenlea and you sponsored so far $885 for shrubs, grasses and trees. The sponsorship is still up and running if your family would like to contribute to the garden this way. Urban Eatin’ recently had their first workshop with our children starting the Peace Garden seeds. They will be back on Monday, April 25th to install stump steps, and walking and sitting logs. Our big planting day will be May 31st from 1-6pm. Urban Eatin’ will be working with the classrooms and parent volunteers to plant the shrubs, grasses, herbs, and other sensory items. If you would like to volunteer anytime that day we would love it. Please email [email protected] or chat with Jennifer or Rebecca at the playground. BACK OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE The Backyard committee is in their brainstorming phase. It is an exciting time to dream about what that amazing space can be used for. They are looking into possible grants, a landscape designer, and are excited for the next school year where they will begin to make the backyard as beautiful as the front. JN They have created a Pinterest account and once it is being used more they will share the link. If you would like to be part of this committee or have further suggestions, please let Marla Friesen know ([email protected]). STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCH Staff Appreciation Lunch will be May 6th and thank you to everyone who has volunteered to bring food, is making decorations and staff gifts, and for volunteering their time. We have amazing staff at Wolseley School and this is our time to show our appreciation. NEXT PC MEETING Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 11th (630-830pm). Everyone is welcome and childcare is provided. We are still in need of a secretary for the Parent Council. If this sounds like something you’d like to do. Please email us. If you are unsure of what this entails, pop in at our Parent Council meeting. We promise that we do not bite and have a great group of parents at our meetings. JN PIZZA LUNCHES Thank you to Jen Davis and Eveline Buehlman for once again co-ordinating pizza lunches! Besides providing a hot pizza lunch for students once a month, this is the primary fundraiser that parent council does to create enough revenue to cover our budget. There is no pre-order form.
