It Might Preach! “Considerable Numbers”

Acts 11:19-26

Acts 11:24 says, “...and considerable numbers were brought to the Lord.” This was the result of the church being “scattered be-cause of the persecution that occurred in connection with Stephen preaching the Lord Jesus” (11:19-20). How, exactly did this happen? What were the ingredients that contributed to con-siderable numbers being brought to the Lord? Can this still hap-pen today?

I. The HAND OF GOD WAS UPON THOSE WHO PRO-CLAIMED JESUS (vv. 20-21a) (cf. John 12:32)

A. The EARLY CHURCH proclaimed Jesus (cf. Acts 5:42) B. The TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY CHURCH must pro-

claim Jesus (cf. Acts 10:39-40)

II. A CONVERSION TO GOD WAS MADE BY THOSE WHO RECEIVED JESUS (v. 21b)

A. They EXERCISED FAITH in their conversion (v. 21b) B. They EXHIBITED REPENTANCE in their conversion

(21c)

III. The MESSAGE OF GOD WAS SPREAD THROUGH THOSE WHO OBEYED JESUS (v. 22a)

(notice two things with regard to this message spreading:)

A. The PROCESS by which the message is spread. 1. People are BROUGHT TO THE “WORD” (SAVIOR)

OF THE LORD (v. 24b) 2. People are TAUGHT THE “WORD” (SCRIPTURE)

OF THE LORD (v. 26b) B. The PURPOSE for which the message is spread. 1. With the gospel message comes SALVATION (v. 21) 2. With the gospel message comes ENCOURAGE-

MENT (vv. 22b) 3. With the gospel message comes GRACE (v. 23a) 4. With the gospel message comes JOY (v. 23b) 5. With the gospel message comes COMMITMENT

(v. 23d)

How shall we see “considerable numbers” brought to the Lord today?

1. With the HAND OF GOD UPON THE PREACHERS

2. With the MESSAGE OF GOD SPREAD THROUGH THE CHURCHES

3. With the CONVERSION OF LOST PEOPLE TO CHRIST rrc

“Live Out Of The Overflow” In his book, Living Out of the Overflow, Richard Blackaby fol-lows the life and ministries of Elijah and Moses. He suggests that their success was as a result of living out of the overflow. He says, “The truth is that everything we need to be joyful and content can be found in our relationship with God.” As we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, we develop a relationship

with Him that produces a lifestyle pleasing to Him.

When I first started college back in the 70’s, I had a particular professor named John Burns. Dr. Burns often told his students, “If you faithfully, consistently read and study and apply God’s Word to your life, you can preach from the overflow.” That was

good advice then and it’s good advice now.

If my study is shallow and rare, I will have little to say from the pulpit. If my study is deep and often consumes hours of my day or days of my week, I will have an abundant “overflow” from which to feed others. This should not be the exception but the rule for the Pastor of a local church. We must “Be” diligent to present ourselves approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (II Tim. 2:15). Our personal lives depend on it and our

congregations will feed on it.

Encouragingly Yours, Russell Cook

A Nugget From My Spiritual Journey... Have you ever noticed that sometimes the Lord brings “life lessons” to your mind in the most unlikely places or at the most unlikely times? Due to knee is-sues, it has been a long time since I have done anything that even looks like gardening other than stick a few plants in a few above-ground pots. Recently, however, I found the need to attempt to “dead-head” and prune a few azalea bushes and other plants. After deciding I could sit in a folding chair and do that, moving it from plant to plant, I began to tackle that job on a beautiful day. As I began to throw the “dead-heads” by the hundreds into a mop bucket and then to snip off dead limbs to add to those throw-aways, I began to think about how that reminds me of the Lord's work in our lives. Knowing that pruning actually helps plants to grow more fully and to be more beautiful, it gives a gardener courage to snip-snip away, knowing that generally you are saving the plant, not destroying it. God knows the same thing about us...when He “prunes” us by pulling or cutting off the things that get in the way of us being useful to Him, He can already see what a beautiful future He has in store for us. I also was careful to not disturb branches that had buds or tiny leaves, showing early evidence of new life for the year! That brought to mind many verses I have seen in a study of Isaiah lately regarding the fact that God always has a remnant (people) in place whenever He judges nations. I also thought of Noah's family, a very small remnant, but a remnant nonetheless, when God judged the entire earth with a flood. When He prunes our individual lives or our nations, we must always remember to look for the remnant of righteousness...He does! He always sees a faithful remnant to preserve. As I bent, stretched and stood up/sat down to move my chair, I realized I was beginning to ache, using muscles not normally used. Pains here and there began to make themselves known. This prompted me to remember what all parents say when they are disciplining their children: “This hurts me worse than it does you!” Children never believe it, but all loving parents know it is true. Reading about the judgments of God toward His people, it is apparently true of Him, too, as our Heavenly Father. His times of judgment are always partnered with eventual grace, mercy, compassion. He hurts for His children and doesn't want to judge us, but for us to bloom beautifully in life, He must!
