STEIN FJELL SHIRTS

At the May and June meetings, we will have our Stein Fjell shirts, that you can order. We offer T shirts, golf shirts, sweat shirts and this year, we are offering Long sleeved T shirts. Approximate prices are on the order sheets. They will be ready for Estes Park Scandinavian Festival.

They do not need to be paid for, until they arrive.John Baldo will have them for display at the May meeting. We will need 12 orders, before we can place the orders. The Rocky Mountain Logo is real cool!!

SUNSHINE REPORT

Many thanks to all the helpers on the latest recent funerals. For Ruth Dohrn's funeral, we thank Neva Gulliksen, Rod Skaflen, John Baldo, Barb Nolin, and the Erdals for Norwegian Delicacies. We also thank Bernice Kwan for the Lodge flowers and to Terry Thompson for his speech about Ruth called" A Life Remembered".

The Strandvold Family thanked the lodge for the flowers for the church, in memory of Al, a chartermember.

Barbra Stone gave a great talk on her artwork and what inspires her to draw Polar Bears as hermain subject.

She has traveled to Norway, Sweden and Canada. The drawing shown above is one of herfavorites titled “Aurora Borealis” There truly is no better place to see the Northern Lights than inNorway!!

CULTURAL SKILLS

Please inquire of the of ficers if you have a desireto learn a cultural skill that is outlined and awarded by Sons of Norway. Some skills can be pursued independently while others lend themselves to group work and study.

Currently, our Wood Carving group is meeting at Vicki’s home and several members have started on the first level requirements for the Cultural Skill program. Please call Vicki Johnson (970-227-1830) or Angela Callow-Mosher (970-669-8636)if you are interested andwould like to attend. Materials and space can then be arranged for. We will be meeting once a month, usually on the 2nd Thursday. Our next meeting is May 10th at 6 PM.

NORWEGIAN LESSON FOR MAY

The Russ CelebrationThe Russ celebration has been a part of the 17 th of May festivities since early in the 20 thcentury.The red Russ are students who take the nationalgraduation exam at the end of high school.The Russ activities are organized by the students themselves and most often include a Russinn, Russ comedy revue, and Russ newspaper. Russ students often decorate old cars, andnow buses and trucks, which are then used in the 17 th of May parade.

Synttende Mai Celebration

Synttende Mai will be celebrated May 20, at the Chilson Center beginning at noon. The room is reserved from 11:30-3:30. Ginger Ketels will chair the event. She and JoAnn Kison will find a co-chair. Rod volunteered to help set-up and stay for clean-up. Peggy Kvasager and Barb Nolin will do the shopping.The Scholarship recipients will be invited to read their winning essays. Sign-ups for participants and volunteers will be available at the April and May meetings. The cost will be $10.00 per person (No cost for children under 6)

Cherry Cream Cake (Kirsebærkremkake)

Recipe for the Cake 2 Cups almonds or othernuts 2 Cups confectioners' sug-ar

• 8 Egg whites• Grind almonds twice, the second time with the con-fectioners' sugar. The almonds should have the consistency of flour. Whip the egg whites until stiff but not dry and blendwith the nuts.• Divide and spread batter in two greased 9-inch (23 cm)springform pans, and bake at 320 degrees F 25 to 30minutes. Cool slightly in pan before removing to rack to cool com-pletely. Makes two 9-inch layers.

Recipe for the Cherry Cream• 1/3 Cup whipping cream• 2 Egg yolks• 2 Tbsp confectioners' sugar• 3 1�2 Tbsp chocolate sauce or syrup• 3 1�2 Tbsp cherry juice

• Beat the cream until firm and glossy. Add eggs and con-fectioners' sugar which have been whipped together until

light and fluffy.• Stir in the chocolate sauce or syrup, and add cherry juiceto taste.• Place one cake layer on platter, baked side down, andcover with half of the cream mixture.• Add second layer, baked side up, and top with remainingcream. Keep refrigerated until serving time.

Share, teach, and laugh at the Trollfjell Heritage Camp, July 8-21 ages 8-13 and TrofjellFolkenhofskule, June 24 – July 7, ages 14-17.Needed: Instructors for Rosemaling, Dance, Language, Music, Heritage and Culture Instructor. Thecommitment isn’t for the whole 4 weeks. It could be a week or a couple of days, schedules are flexible.

Ruth Elaine Larson Dohrn, of Loveland, Colorado left this world Thursday, March 8th, 2018 to rejoin her daughter Allyson and husbandWilliam just shy of her 88th birthday. Ruth was born March 13th, 1930 in Austin, MN to Hogan and Mabel (Viste) Larson of Rose Creek, MN.Ruth was active in school playing sports and trombone. After graduating from Rose Creek High School in 1948, Ruth went on to study at Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, where she earned her RN degree. While earning her nursing credentials, Ruth participated in the school’s Acapella nurses choir.On June 8th,1952 Ruth married a handsome music teacher, William Dohrn. In 1968, they moved their family to Loveland, Colorado where Ruth pursued her nursing career and later worked as a travel agent. In addition to raising five daughters, Ruth was a member of King of Glory’s church choir, participated in many performances in local musical theaters, and sang in barbershop quartets where she made deep and lasting friendships. Bill and Ruth were founding members of King of Glory, where he directed the choir and she sang alto. Ruth was a charter member of Sons of Norway (Stein Fjell Lodge) where she organized Lutefisk dinners.Ruth is survived by her brother, Donald Larson of Adams, MN, daughters Rebecca, Robin Dohrn-Simpson (Marc Simpson), Paige Kiolbasa, Shaun Smith(Eric) and 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, andcousins Arlen, Norm, Gordon, and Bob Viste. Ruth is also preceded in death by her brothers Paul and Willard Larson.Ruth will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her. A viewingwill be held on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Viegut Funeral Home from4pm-6pm and 1 hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at King of Glory Lutheran Church followed by a luncheon.Memorial donations can be made to the Scleroderma Foundation by phone at 303-806-

Alan Carl StrandvoldAlan "Al" Carl Strandvold, 88, was born on April 14, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY to Irving and Emma (Matzuga) Strandvold. He died at his home on March 21, 2018. He lived in Brooklyn until 1935 when his family moved to Merrick, NY. After serving in the Marine Corps Reserve between the years of 1948 and 1952 he earned a degree in Animal Husbandry from the Long Island Agricultural Technical Institute. In 1954 he beganworking for the United States Postal Service. On October 8, 1955 Al was married to Margaret Eleanor Brown. He built the house where they lived in Huntington, NY on Long Island and where their four children were born. In 1969 the family moved to Loveland, CO where he continued to work for the Post Office, first in Fort Collins and then in Loveland until he retired in 1986. Al was a charter member of Stein Fjell Lodge, Sons of Norway. Al was also member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Loveland and enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. He also enjoyed woodworking, watching the Rockies and Broncos, and his daily trips to the Village Inn. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret "Peggy;" son Carl Strandvold of Loveland; daughter Karen Holthouser and husband Steve of Commerce City, CO; daughterTina Gustafson and husband Ross of Golden, CO; and son Glen Strandvold and wife Cindy of Loveland. He is also survived by grandchildren Laurie Roth (Billy), Scott Hilliard, Christina Croner, Ellie Gustafson, Eric Strandvold (Shenoa), Zeke Gustafson, and Emily Benson (Devin); as well as great-grandchildren Dylan Strandvold, Jessie Roth, Robbie Croner, and Logan Croner. A memorial service will be held at2:00 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Loveland. A coffee and cookie reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church choir in care of Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home.
