IDE PARISH COUNCIL Idevillage.org.uk

Parish Council elections: Four parish councillors decided not to seek re-election in the May local council elections. John Smart, Barry Hookins, Chris Bishop and Sarah Tiley have served well over 50 years between them! John was treasurer and village hall representative for more than two decades. Barry was chairman for three years, served on the planning committee, worked as school liaison, helped set up the new emergency planning group, is a member of the Weir Meadow Working Group, and, twice, built the play area. Chris chaired the Neighbourhood Plan steering group to success despite formal objections from district, city and county councils. And Sarah took on the administration of the cemetery as well as sitting on the planning committee. We thank them warmly on behalf of the village for their marvellous contributions. Three new parish councillors have already been elected, as the vacant seats were not contested. Jenny Lundh, Jessica Paine and Carolyn Tysoe join Nick Bradley, Pete Bishop, Andy Swain, Rachel Herbert and Mark Thomas to form the new council on 15 May 2019. One vacancy remains, and we will seek to co-opt an additional councillor during the early summer. If you would like to become a parish councilor by filling the remaining vacancy, please get in touch with Mel Liversage or Nick Bradley. Elections for three District Councillors to represent us in Kenn Ward will be held

on Thursday 2nd May 2019 as planned.

Pynes Community Orchard: We still expect to sign the option to purchase agreement very soon! This will allow us to start fundraising. A prospectus is ready to go out as soon as this happens. The Orchard Working Group meets on Wednesday 1st May 2019; and a volunteer working party on 11 May. If you would like to come along, please contact Mark Thomas at [email protected] Weir Meadow : The working group met on 9 April 2019. We have had meetings with the TDC planners and a topographical survey has been undertaken of the land, with a view to submitting an application for full planning permission over the summer. A scale drawing showing the planned layout is available on the village website. Stuart Brooking has taken over as chairman of the group. The date of the next meeting will be Thursday 11 July 2019 7pm in the cricket pavilion. Minutes of the Orchard and Weir Meadow working grou ps are available on the website.

Planning Applications discussed on 4 April 2019 New applications: 19/00620/FUL Whiddon Farm, Whiddo n Lane: Erection of replacement agricultural barn. This application was fully discussed and the committee voted unanimously not to support this application on the grounds of (1) size, (2) that it is above the skyline on land classified as AGLV and (3) it fails to meet the conditions set out in NPPF and TDC Local Plan 2013- 2033. A copy of the chairman’s letter to TDC Planning Department is available on the website. 19/00414/FUL 12 High Street , Ide: Raise the northern brick chimney stack. This application is supported by the committee. Update on previous applications 19/00039/FUL Springwell View, Old ide Lane , Use Of land as a domestic curtilage, construction of a detached garage and retention of hardstanding. APPLICATION REFUSED - For the following reason: The proposed development, in particular the proposed garage, will, due to its size and location, have an adverse impact on the rural character of the Ide village entrance contrary to Policy IDE07 of the Ide Neighbourhood Plan. 18/01024/MAJ Springwell Nursery IDE Erection of a new Garden Sales Area Building including Café/Restaurant, Storage/Warehouse, New Public Car Park Area and Turning Area. No decision yet 17/02835/FUL Sculpher Photography, Fore Street - still awaiting flood report The next meeting of the Planning Committee is on Wednesday 15 May 2019 at 6pm unless otherwise advised. To view planning applications, go to www.teignbridge.gov.uk/planning and search using the address or reference number. The village website: www.idevillage.org.uk is being updated. If you would like to advertise on this site for £15 per annum, please contact the clerk. The next Parish Council meeting will be held in Ide Memorial Hall on Wednesday 15 May 2019 at 7.30pm. Meetings of the Parish Council and its Planning Committee are held in public and you are welcome to attend. There is time allocated at the start of the meetings for public participation. If you have an issue you would like the council to discuss, please contact the chairman or another parish councillor. Requests for items to be considered for inclusion on the agenda should be made at least 14 days before the date of the meeting. The first ten minutes of a Parish Council meeting are open to the public to raise possible items for future meetings; or to comment on items on the agenda for that meeting. IDE COMMUNITY SHOP AND POST OFFICE

Did you know that your Ide community shop is celebrating its 10th Anniversary? We invite all to join in with our joint AGM and 10th Anniversary celebrations on FRIDAY 10 th May at 7pm in the village hall. Do come along and join us on what should be a very sociable evening. After the formalities of the AGM, we will have a bar, fish and chip van as well as a display of photos and films from the past 10 years. We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. Last month we saw the second of our annual children’s Easter colouring competition. We had some beautiful creations; maybe you saw them on the shop window. Peggy had the honour of choosing 4 ‘winners’, a role she enjoyed and honestly found quite tricky, due to the great entries. The 4 lucky winners were Amelie, Ellie, Summer and Jake. All who took part were invited to come along to the shop and collect a complimentary Cadburys cream egg. Thank you to all who joined in with the fun.

With two bank holidays in the month of May, it really is time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. Have you dusted off your BBQ yet? We think it’s time to enjoy the season and get outside for some Al fresco dining. We have all the cleaning products you might need to get your BBQ ready. Local, sustainable charcoal. Delicious Kenniford Farm sausages and burgers as well as veggie options. Something to please everyone, we hope. Why not compliment your dining experience with a bottle of wine or beer. We think we have a very wide selection

and variety, we are sure that you will find something to suit your palate. The wonderful Alan and Barry do a great job of keeping us stocked with all things alcoholic – it’s their favourite part of the job! This month sees two very dedicated members of the committee take a step down. After 10 years each of serving the community with their dedication and enthusiasm, Imogen and Liz are to have a break from shop business. We are sure you would like to join us all in thanking them for the many, many hours of help and commitment to the smooth running of our village shop. As always we are here for you - a community shop run by volunteers for the benefit of all.

4.

Perhaps you come in regularly to get cash or use the post office for one of its many array of services. Why not on your way out, take a moment to have a closer look around the shop. We think you will be surprised just how much variety we have. Perhaps you would like to stop for a chat, we’ve always got time to talk! If you would like to be part of this wonderful local amenity please do let us know, We are always looking for help, with either cleaning the shop, helping to serve or just re stocking the shelves.

THE IDE COMMUNITY SHOP ASSOCIATION LIMITED

Please take this as formal notice that the annual general meeting of the Ide Community Shop Association Limited will be held on:

FRIDAY 10th MAY 2019 AT 7PM AT:

IDE MEMORIAL HALL, FORE STREET, IDE, EXETER, DEVON EX2 9RQ All the members are invited to attend in order to agree and approve the following:

• The financial statements of the Association (for the year to 31st December 2018) – a hard copy is available to view at the shop.

• The election of the Management Committee members (remember any shareholder is invited to stand for the Management Committee).

• The appointment of accountant / auditor, for the year ended 31st December 2019.

• The fixing of the annual subscriptions • The application of any surpluses for the current year for re-investment in the

Shop or community projects. As well as the formalities set out above, we will update you on the progress of the Shop and it will also be an opportunity for you to voice any opinions or suggestions you may have. We want to take this opportunity to continue to celebrate OUR shop so the event will be open to all villagers and the formalities will be kept to a minimum.

5.

CLIMATE EMERGENCY Please get in touch with us. We are gathering ideas for actions the Parish Council and community could take to help tackle climate change locally. We don't want to tell anyone what to do, we just want them to tell us what they have done. There is lots happening already such as solar panels on the hall roof for the shop, activities at the school coordinated with the climate strikes, the Community Orchard and Weir Meadow projects will guarantee green space and a carbon sink long into the future. We can measure the carbon footprint of the village, then see how it improves in future years. If you have ideas we can try, or if you could help, or just tell us what you are already doing, please get in touch. IDE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH The HUB@Ide – December

Wasn’t Easter lovely!? The weather was beautiful, everyone seemed happier and although the chocolate started to melt on the joint church Easter Egg hunt on Good Friday, it was great to see so many children (and families) enjoying their time with us. (we even got to sing happy birthday to Adrian!) Easter Sunday was full of celebration – it’s such an uplifting day singing a mix of the traditional hymns like ‘Christ the Lord is risen today’ and newer songs like ‘Oh Happy Day’.

At the All-Age service we went through the events of Holy week and ended up wrapping Danny in grave cloths, just to see how hard it would have been to handle Jesus’ body, and how difficult it would have been for Jesus to uncover himself if he had been ‘just sleeping/unconscious’ as some might suggest. It is undeniable that our Jesus died, rose again and that our hope is in Him.

If you are an unbeliever, I challenge you to research the facts about Jesus and the evidence available regarding his life, death and resurrection to see whether it really is true or not. There is more evidence that you might think, both from Christian writers and non-Christian sources. If your eternal destiny depends on it, shouldn’t you at least find out whether there is any truth in it or not?

JUBILEE CLUB

We celebrated Mothering Day on April 1st with a visit of the Ide Schoolchildren. It is a joy to listen to the children sing, with Sue's training they sang a selection of songs. Fun was the theme, with a song of their own about ginger beer to begin with then going on with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Doe a Deer from the Sound of Music all sung with much enthusiasm. Posies were then given out before the children returned to school receiving little goodies as they left. Thank you to the people who made the posies. Next it was time to move to the Huntsman for another celebration - all top secret! I am pleased to say it was a secret well kept, judging by the birthday girl`s reaction when she entered to find the Jubilee Club and her sisters and members of family and friends gathered. Yes, Peggy was celebrating her 90th birthday. It was such a pleasure to join in the celebration. Peggy sends out cards for the members' birthdays and other occasions. On April 15th Paul Rendell came to give us an illustrated talk to about the Isles of Scilly. There are 100 islands but only a few are inhabited,12,000 years ago they were all joined but with the drop of sea levels much is now under water. Saint Mary`s is the largest and the arrival point whether travelling by sea or air. Most of the Islands are owned by Prince Charles. There is little crime requiring only one policeman in the winter months with the addition of another one during the Summer. In Saint Mary's Old Churchyard in Old Town many graves can be found, including that of the late Harold Wilson, and many headstones can be found of the victims of shipwrecks around the islands. Gig racing is popular and the international racing is held there in May. The gigs were used to row out to the shipwrecks. In the winter months twitchers visit seeking rare birds. A few years ago a rare black woodpecker was spotted, 150 twitchers arrived, however there is a sad ending, the bird was killed by a cat. Tall hedges have been grown to protect the flowers from winds and it is a commercial enterprise selling Scilly flowers by post. Indeed I often order some to send to family. The gardens on Tresco are famous with plants brought there from all over the world. It is a truly magical place to visit. It was good to see Enid at the club and Ken and Sheila back again. A bunch of flowers were given to Jill Davison for a special birthday. DIARY DATES May 13th Birthday party with entertainment by a Ukulele Band. PYNES ORCHARD

On a glorious sunny morning at the end of March a group of us met at Pynes Orchard for our latest Working Party.

We managed to prune a few more trees and cut back some of the bushes that border the orchard. James Romain and Richard Cloke got stuck into some of the fallen dead trees with their chainsaws.

The best part of the morning was seeing so many people come along. There was always time for a coffee, a chat and a chance to admire the views.

A huge thank you to everybody who came along - and in particular James Romain for bringing not just his chainsaw but a trailer and quad bike too.

The next one is Saturday 11th May at 0930. All welcome as ever - no expertise required! You’ll find the orchard just opposite the car park at the top of the village.

WEST TOWN FARM NEWS

What a busy month we’ve had on the farm! Our newest team member; Joey is here to help plan burger evenings, check my spelling and punctuation, and assist with our weddings. Her first week has consisted of feeding the pigs, building new shelving for the greenhouse and planning for our upcoming events. It’s nice to welcome someone new to the farm and plan for the year ahead. Our first wedding of the year is this month! We can’t believe how quickly wedding season has come back around. Here we go! Get your diaries out! 12th May 11am-4pm Spring at the Farm is happening. We’ve got POCO DROM, tractor trailer rides, willow weaving, fireside storytelling , BBQ and much more. £4 Adults, £3 children, £12 Family, Under 3’s FREE. Life is blooming lovely here on the farm with our apple trees signalling the change in season and blossoming is in full force. The birds are singing and bouncing around the yard and we’re doing the same. New calves are being born and so far all the births have gone really well with Mums and calves back out in the field within a few hours. The pigs have grown a lot so can’t escape as much as they used to. Only once last month and we found them under the shepherd's hut asleep. Cheeky porkers. The strong winds over the winter blew off the roof to the chicken coup so Helen and Joey have been building a new home for the girls. Keep an eye out on our instagram to see the big move when it happens. We’ll have fresh meat from 9th-13th May. If you would like to pre-order any cuts please get in touch with us. We’ll have fresh organic pork, lamb and beef.
