FIRST THouGHTSDavid Hull, Pastor

Each year our family makes a pilgrimage to the beach. We really are very predictable. Two weeks at Garden City, South Carolina seems to renew energy and restore us for the coming church year. We rest, read, take in the surf and sun, and of course eat all of the good seafood that we can. This year the thought of rest sounds especially inviting.

In my absence the following schedule has been designed for worship leadership:

Sunday morning, May 27

Jud Reasons, our Associate Pastor, will be preaching in both worship services.

Sunday night, May 27

There will be no evening activities due to the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

Wednesday night, May 30

Several of the folks who have been tutors at Lakewood Elementary this year will give us a year-end report on this new partnership.

Sunday Morning, June 3

Jamie Mackey, our Minister to Students, will be preaching in both morning worship services.

Sunday Night, June 3

A Church-wide picnic will be held at Sharon Johnston State Park.

Wednesday night, June 6

The Hallelujah Choir will offer a concert in the Fellowship Hall.

I look forward to seeing you again on June 10. You will be in our thoughts and prayers as we are away. Enjoy the wonderful worship services that you will experience in my absence. I know that they will be a blessing to you.

At VBS this year we are traveling back to Babylon and

learning about Daniel’s courage in captivity. VBS is open to

upcoming Kindergarteners through completed 6th grade. Invite your

friends and come join in the adventure! Registration is available

Renovation Update- May 2012Construction in all areas of the building is moving ahead full speed, and the project remains within budget and on schedule for November 2012 completion.

Brick work is complete on the front of the Administrative Suite, and the “store-front” windows have been installed. A retaining wall has been constructed on the corner nearest the railroad track, and sidewalks and curbs will be poured soon. A material called EFIS will be sprayed at the top face of the building and will look very similar to the stone cap on the existing facility. The large HVAC roof-top units arrived via police escort and have been set on the roof. Once the pipes for chilled water are installed, the roofs will receive their final “white coat”. The front entry area framing is complete, and the welcome area interior brick has been installed. Work continues in the second floor hallway leading to the Gathering Place, consisting mostly of rough electrical and HVAC.

The contractors are putting final framing touches on the arches in the Gathering Place ceiling and...the skylight has been installed! The Gathering Place is now completely in the dry. The view of the steeple is awesome, and the natural light will make this area very inviting. The “grand staircase” will be installed soon. The framing under the staircase has already been completed, and it will accommodate a downstairs (St. Clair side) welcome center and some storage closets.

Great progress is occurring in the Student Center. The framing is complete on the ground floor and interior brick work is almost finished. Two sets of stairs leading from the upstairs mezzanine to the worship space will be installed soon. Rough electrical and HVAC is nearly complete and the steel has been sprayed with fire retardant material. Brick is being installed outside on the St. Clair side, starting near the railroad tracks and moving around the building from there. There is a lot of brick and stone! So, this work will take several weeks.

The Community Room, Support Kitchen, and main restrooms have all been framed, and most of the rough electrical, plumbing and HVAC has been completed in the area between the buildings. Inside the Life Center (gym), the drywall is being installed. The drywall features some special “reveal” joints and a faux crown molding treatment. This will dress up the space for worship and other events without sacrificing the durability needed for recreation. Most of the big duct work has been installed in the high ceiling, and the sprinkler system piping is nearly complete.

Work is occurring simultaneously inside the building, outside of the building and on top of the building. The plans are becoming reality! Continue to pray for safe work, good building weather, and that God will allow us to use this facility to better serve our city.

Summer 2012

Staff News...Music Ministry InternHarris Gessner is from Madison, AL. He is the son of Mark and Rev. Mary Jo Gessner, who are both ministers at First Baptist Madison. Harris is a recent graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelors of Music Education in Voice. While in school he was apart of the Chamber Choir, Marching Band, and attended Auburn First Baptist Church. At AFBC, Harris served on staff as the Youth Intern and directed the Youth Choir. In the fall, he will continue his education at Emory University pursuing a Masters degree in Choral Conducting.

Student Ministry InternWe welcome Matt Hester as our Student Ministry Intern this summer. Matt just graduated from Samford University and will start the McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University this fall. Matt comes from Fort Payne, Alabama, and was one of Jamie’s students at First Baptist Fort Payne. He will be a great addition to our church’s ministry this summer.

A Letter of Resignation from Amanda AllenDear FBC family, This past week I turned in my resignation to the Personnel Committee. I will be working through Music Camp (which is going to be so much fun!) in July, but I will be leaving my job effective August 1st to start teaching music lessons from my studio full-time. I have LOVED working with you and with the children in our Wednesday night programs, but I do feel that God is calling me to another form of ministry. I want to thank you all so much for the friendship and kindness you have

shown me these past four years. I’m really excited about moving into a different type of ministry, but I will miss you, and I can’t wait to hear about all the wonderful things that are going on with M&M in the future! With much love, Amanda
