Where Are You Looking? Are we, like the disciples, looking in the wrong
direction? As they looked up to heaven, they
probably realized what they had lost. Jesus was
no longer in their midst. But then, the Easter
stories all tell us that they never really under-
stood his risen presence with them. And so
they were asked: “Why are you standing here
looking at the sky?” (Acts 1:11).
Are we also looking up to heaven when we
should be looking out to the world? Of course,
it is right that we reflect on Jesus’ ascension.
However, today’s understanding of the universe helps us realize that the biblical account of Jesus’ as-
cension into heaven may be a way of saying that he is glorified with God. As Paul says, he has been
granted the place of honor at God’s right hand, “far above
every principality, authority, power, and dominion” with
“all things beneath his feet” (Ephesians 1:21–22). Jesus,
now with God, radiates the full splendor of his resurrection.
We must turn to the Gospel passage to get the fullness of
the story of the ascension. Jesus did not say: “Watch what is going to happen.” Instead he told them to
go out: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). We might know these
words so well that we miss their forcefulness. In effect, Jesus is telling them: go out to the whole world
and tell them what you have seen and heard. I did what it was for me to do; now it is up to you to do the
rest. Don’t worry, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). Look where you’re going, not where I
went.

A Word from Pope Francis The Church holds out a mission, and I would like to entrust you with this mission. It
is to go back and talk to your grandparents. Today more than ever we need this
bridge, this dialogue, between grandparents and grandchildren, between the young
and the elderly. —World Youth Day Prayer Vigil, April, 8, 2017

YOUR PARISH NEEDS YOU In this time when people are not coming to the
church for Masses and other activities, we still
need your generosity to continue paying the bills,
providing services, and paying the staff of our
Parish. Some people have been asking how they
can continue to give the weekly offering
(envelope or direct deposit).
You can continue supporting our parish by
dropping your offering envelope into the mail
slot at the parish office or mailing it in. We are
arranging for direct deposit as an alternative way
of giving. Details on how to do this will be
coming soon.
We are very grateful to those who have dropped
off or mailed in their weekly collection to the
parish and to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
Your generosity is very much appreciated and it
shows that St. Teresa's has a meaningful place
in your heart.
5th Anniversary of Laudato Sí Bring solidarity to our world in a shared moment of
prayer at noon local time on Sunday, May 24.

parish website. It will also be sent to parishioners
emails that we have on file.
Mass Intentions
The parish office is open only for staff. If
you would like to book a mass intention please
call the office and the information will be
taken over the phone. Payment for the
intention must be received on the day that it
is booked. The cost is $5 cash or cheque.
Dear Padre,
I want to deepen the spiritual sense of Christ in
my life. How can I create a strong spiritual
connection to Jesus?
Your answer may be within your own parish. I
suggest you begin your spiritual journey by
connecting with a parish outreach group. When I
worked as a missionary in Brazil, I marveled at
how the youth groups that I worked with brought
a deeper spirituality to my own life.
It was common in Brazil to have a three-day
retreat leading up to Lent. Although this was a
youth retreat, it also energized the adults who
worked with them. The highlight was on Ash
Wednesday evening, when the teens would give
public testimony at Mass to the Lord working in
their lives. Their testimony inspired parishioners
to rededicate themselves to educating the smaller
children throughout the year. A youth group never
lacks in spirit, which is usually contagious!
It’s difficult to seek spiritual enlightenment alone.
There’s spiritual strength in numbers (even Jesus
kept twelve disciples near him!), and even greater
spiritual power within the graced walls of your
parish. When you serve others, your spiritual path
is deepened and expanded. Working with youths
is just one way to enhance your spiritual
connection. Remember the words of St. Paul:
“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the
same Spirit; there are different forms of service
but the same Lord; there are different workings
but the same God who produces all of them in
everyone. To each individual the manifestation of
the Spirit is given for some benefit”
(1 Corinthians 12:4–7).

MESSAGE FOR THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION MAY 24, 2020
Dear Parishioners,
Greetings; I hope that you and your families are fine and safe as we have been walking in this
journey of Easter in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. On this journey, we have had ups and
downs, but we know that we are not alone, because God is always with us and among us. In this
Sunday’s message, I would like to thank all of you who have been supporting our Parish and all
people in the world through your prayers, offerings, feeding, ministering and encouraging each
other. All these acts of love say to us that the Risen Lord abides in us and we abide in Him.
During this Easter season, I have been inviting many of you to share with us your experience of
God through daily reflections in short videos. This has been a very meaningful and touching
experience for many of us. When we hear you talking about how God has been calling you for a
mission, caring for you in moments of trials or difficulties, forgiving and enlightening you in
moments of darkness and doubts, helping you to work on a deep relationship with God and with
our brothers and sisters, and guiding you by the Holy Spirit, we truly see the fulfilment of Jesus’
words in today’s Gospel reading, “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
The experiences that you have spoken of in these videos are examples of how Jesus is “with us
always” in our everyday lives.
As we are getting closer to the celebration of the Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, I
would like to invite you to continue praying with the Novena of the Holy Spirt that we began last
Friday, May 22 and will continue until Saturday, May 30th. Reflections are posted at 11:30 am
Newfoundland Time and are available through:
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RedemptoristsBaltimore; YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/BaltRedemtorists and
On our parish website stteresa.ca. You can find the information to advertise and explain the Novena available on stteresa.ca. This is
a great reflection in this time of worldwide uncertainty and distress. The human heart cries out for
the Paraclete, the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. That is why we pray, “Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth”.
Today, Sunday, May 24, we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, when Jesus reminds his disci-
ples that he will be with them always. He tells his disciples that they will receive the power when
the Holy Sprit comes upon them. God wants so much to be with us that he will find his ways. We
must let these promises sink in. No matter what our circumstances, whatever difficulties we face,
God is with us; God loves us. We need to sit with these words, reading them slowly, again and
again.
I want to let you know that we continue to be united in many ways, especially in our prayers and
love for each other. Stay safe and healthy…
Many Blessings,
Fr. Ciro A. Perez, CSsR
