SPECIAL MASS On Saturday, May 30th at the 4:00PM Mass, Catechumens and Candidates will receive the Sacraments of Initiation
Today we celebrate the feast of the Ascension of Our Lord. After his
resurrection, having spent forty days with his disciples, our Lord ascends
to his beloved Father. Today’s readings call us to be true disciples. In His
commission Jesus gives us his authority, to speak in his name. The Lord
instructed his disciples to be his witnesses from Jerusalem to the ends of
the world, but they were also told to wait for the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The Gospel of Matthew tells us of this great commission that was given
to the Apostles by Jesus. Prior to granting this authority to proclaim the
Good News, Jesus convinces them of his own power and tells them that
he always enjoyed such an authority from his Father. Jesus opened the
minds of disciples to understand the Scriptures. Then he commissioned
and blessed them, reminding them that the message of repentance and
forgiveness must be taken to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Then
he got specific with them, saying, ‘Stay here in the city until you have
been clothed with the power from on high.’ And then Jesus did leave the
disciples. But he did not leave them empty-handed. He gave them a
mission. He made them understand their powers.
If we look into the Gospel, we can understand that Ascension meant three
things to the disciples. First, it is the end of their physical togetherness
with Jesus. Second, it is the beginning of their mission and third, it is the
source of hope. As we await the coming of the Spirit on Pentecost and
the beginning of the Church’s ministry, let us also know that we have not
been left empty-handed. It is time to check our commitment. Are we
really ready to be commissioned and make Disciples for Christ?
nuestro compromiso. ¿Estamos realmente listos para ser comisionados y
hacer Discípulos para Cristo?

MAY 24, 2020 – THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
Fr. Ben., May God’s grace fill your heart with joy and your
days with health and happiness!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
PRAYER FOR THE PURSUIT OF PEACE Father, today we pause to reflect on the sacrifice made by those who paid the ultimate price on behalf of our nation. We pray that their sacrifices are never forgotten, nor is the pain of their families. We acknowledge that freedom comes at a cost and pray that we can pursue peace and someday celebrate Memorial Day as a long-ago memory of the time before we started living the peaceful existence you intended for us since the beginning of creation. Let us turn to you Lord, in our grief and in our remembrance of the fallen. Guide us toward a harmonious existence as we honor those who were willing to give up their lives that we may gather here today freely. On this Memorial Day, we pray for peace and for those who gave all. Lead up toward a world where no one must give their lives in pursuit of freedom - may we be receptive to your guidance and may we never forget the fallen.
STEWARDSHIP – A FOCUS ON GIVING
Once a person commits being a Disciple, Through Baptism, Stewardship Is not an option, but rather, a responsibility. A steward is a Disciple of Jesus who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cultivates them responsibly, shares them lovingly in justice with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord. SHARING is a gift that is given to another without wanting or expecting something in return. Sharing involves giving the whole self just as Christ did on the Cross. This is how we should model our giving relationship with the Church. Sharing our gifts generously, without expectations, helps the church live out its mission. LOVINGLY means to serve others with love, out of love. Love is wanting, desiring, and doing for the good of others. What you have received from the love of God you must share with others. This is why loving your spouse is an act; you show your love by giving, sharing, and serving your spouse freely. JUSTICE means not to overdo it and not to give too little. It means finding the perfect balance. You cannot give away your house because that takes away from your family. But you can give a gift card to someone who is homeless. This is a justice and balance

St. Thomas the Apostle Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continues to be very busy answering the hotline. Our home visits have turned into detailed phone visits. With the assistance of Catholic Charities, we have been able to help families with rent, utilities, medications, delivery of food, hygiene items and paper products. We have been doing all this while practicing social distancing and the wearing of masks as we go and help the families. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Thomas the Apostle Conference asks for your continued support of monetary donations, gift cards, food items, hygiene items, paper products, cleaning supplies, baby diapers and your prayers so that we continue to help families in our community.
