The Blessed Trinity: A Community Like No Other

We believe in the Blessed Trinity, Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. We begin and end our prayers with the sign of the cross, which invokes the names of the three persons of the Blessed Trinity. Many of our prayers including, the glory-be, the doxology, the grace, etc., are Trinitarian in structure. And all of them are based on different scripture passages (Mt 28:18-19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Jn 14:26). We are created, redeemed, sanctified and being guided home by the Blessed Trinity. We believe in the Blessed Trinity, three persons in One God, because that is the way Scriptures reveal God. In the Scriptures, God the Father is the creator. God the Son is the redeemer. And God the Holy Spirit is the advocate, sanctifier, teacher and guide. In the book of Genesis, God uses a plural pronoun to describe Himself, “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…’” (Gen 1:26). In the beginning the Spirit hovered over the water (Gen 1:2). The Spirit spoke through the prophets (1 Sam 10:6). And the prophets in turn, prophesied about the coming of the Messiah or the Son of God (Ps 16:8011; Is 7:14; Dan 7:13-14 etc.). In the New Testament, especially, in the Gospel, we see numerous references to God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. We see this at the annunciation (Lk 1:29:37); at Jesus’ baptism (Mt 3:16-17); and throughout Jesus’ teachings (Jn 14:26; 15:26). In fact, the New Testament is a Trinitarian document in that it is full of references to the Blessed Trinity. The Church is, therefore, a Trinitarian Church, “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession” (1 Pet 2:9). We are God’s special possession because we have been adopted and incorporated into the divine community. In here, we are one as God is one. In here, there is no room for division, discrimination, bigotry, envy or jealousy. In here, “there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, [neither Black, White, Asian, Latino nor Colored], nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). And “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (2 Cor 13:14).

Every time I am doing a retreat or youth night, I do a questions box where teens can ask any questions they want about the church, I always get the same 3 questions no matter what. The questions I get asked are 1.) Is sex outside of marriage really a sin? 2.) Why are priest not allowed to get married? 3.) Why do we worship Mary? No matter where I am and what the demographic is, these are 3 questions I get no matter what which fascinates me. The first question makes sense because we live in a world that constantly promotes sex and most of the time it’s not within the confines of marriage, so I understand why teens would ask if it’s a sin. The second question is understandable because the life of a priest can be very much a mystery to people especially when they have never learned about celibate life and the reasons behind it. But the third question really strikes a chord with me every time I get asked. I remember being a teen and asking why Catholics worship Mary, especially because I knew of Christ’s sacrifice and what it meant for us as Catholics. When my religion teacher told me that we don’t worship Mary we pray to her for her intercession I was very confused. The reason for my confusion is that I had seen so many things involving Mary growing up that they looked like people were worshiping her, especially when people would kneel in front of statues of her and cry to her but I never saw people doing that in adoration. I always tell teens that we don’t worship Mary; however we do hold her up high. Mary is an incredible woman who made huge sacrifices to carry Jesus and raise him and is someone to look to for strength especially when it comes to saying yes to God’s plan for us. The Eucharist is the source and summit of the mass and our faith, and it was Mary’s yes that made that possible. So we do not worship Mary, but she is held high as the mother of Jesus which is a beautiful thing. Sometimes we have a tendency to focus on things in our life that make it seem like we are worshiping them and we need to take a step back and remember who the focus of our life should be, Jesus.
