From the Pastor

What Does the Holy Trinity Matter to My Life? “There is One God Who is 3 Divine Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit” - This is the simple way many of us first learned of the great mystery of the Holy Trinity. But this does not explain how One God can be 3 Persons! Some have used common objects to help us understand this mystery. Perhaps the most famous is our patron, St. Patrick, who is said to have used the three-leaf shamrock. His point was that, as the one shamrock consists of three leaves, so the One Holy Trinity consists of three Divine Persons. This kind of illustration helped many to accept the Holy Trinity, but of course it still does not explain the mystery. But our inability to fully understand the Holy Trinity does not make this teaching less relevant to our lives. In fact, the

Catechism of the Catholic Church calls the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity “the central mystery of Christian faith and life.” (CCC #234) This mystery is most important for us because each of us was created in the image and likeness of the One God Who is 3 Divine Persons. That means that whatever we can learn of the Holy Trinity will help us to know who we are and what we are called to be! Perhaps the closest we can come to understanding the Holy Trinity is through another mystery, that of love. “God Himself is an eternal exchange of love, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and He has destined us to share in that exchange.” (CCC #221) God the Father eternally gives to the Son all that He is, as an act of perfect love. The Father makes this life-giving gift of Himself totally, freely and unconditionally. God the Son eternally returns the gift of Himself to the Father, perfectly loving the Father. We see this total self-giving love of the Son in human history, when He became the man Jesus Christ and in perfect obedience to His Father, suffered and died on the Cross. Jesus made this life-giving gift of Himself totally, freely and unconditionally. And What about God the Holy Spirit? When we pray the Creed, we say that the Holy Spirit proceeds from God-the-Father and God-the-Son. Since the Father and the Son love each other so perfectly, the Holy Spirit is sometimes called “the eternal fruit of the love of the Father and the Son.” So what does all this mean for our lives? It means that all of us, created in the image and likeness of the Holy Trinity, are meant to freely give of ourselves in perfect love for the sake of other persons! We are meant to do this in a life-giving way, in a complete and unconditional way. Most of us are called to do this through marriage and family. But some of us are called to do this in service to others as priests, nuns, deacons, and men and women in religious life. In this earthly life our love is not perfect, but all of us will be able to love others perfectly by the time we get to heaven! We came from God, and because of the loving sacrifice of Jesus, God can also be our destiny. O Most Holy Trinity, may Your love increase in us until we can become perfectly united with You forever!

Thank you !

What to Wear for Church? If we were invited to a very special banquet, where a king or queen or other head of state would be present, would we come dressed as if we were going to the beach? Would we wear tattered clothing that was full of holes? No, we would surely wear our

very best and most respectful

clothes for such an important event. Then shouldn’t we feel

at least the same way about attending the Eucharistic banquet with the King of Kings, Jesus Christ? We don’t have to buy expensive clothing to come to Mass, but we should dress well and respectfully, not to draw attention to ourselves, nor to distract others, but to honor our great King!

God bless those who served our

country and have passed into eternal

life. May they rest in peace.

MAY IS THE MONTH OF MARY Devotion to the Mother of Our Savior has its roots in ancient times. It is understood that she participated in the life of the early Church. There is a house in Turkey (near Ephesus) where Mary is purported to have lived with St. John at the end of her life. One of Jesus’s last requests as He hung

dying on the cross was that St. John care for his mother. A shrine has been built on the location where both Christians and Muslims (Islam considers Mary to be the mother of a prophet), go to worship. At the Council of Ephesus in 431 Mary was proclaimed Mother of God. May devotions began more recently, at the end of the 18th century in Rome and, according to the Catholic News Agency, was started by a group of poor children who gathered together to sing the litany of Our Lady at a small shrine bearing her image. From there the devotion spread among a greater and greater number of people who would join the children and the month of Mary was born. During this month of May we are encouraged to deepen our love for the Blessed Mother whose primary task is to lead us to her Son. By: Father F. Stodola
