Paul qualified on Saturday with a nice +89, but on Sunday in the semifinals, he bowled ex- ceptionally well, had the high- est score, so was seeded #1. His first match against #8 seed George Evans was a close match most of the way, but Paul’s carry was better down the stretch & he prevailed. His second match was against Inland Empire NABI member Guy Clear, who had battled Erik Martin to advance to match #2. At the other end of the bracket, #7 seed Da- vid Danielly & #2 seed Ron Tanja bowled one of the clos- est matches of the finals, with David winning by a scant 6 pins & moved on. Waiting for him was #3 seed Paul Passarino, who had survived a tough match against #4 seed, Christine Cacciatore. That was the closest match of the finals, just 5 pins, & set the stage for match #2. Paul Willey prevailed over Guy, & David shot the highest game of the tournament, a real nice 291, in his win over Paul Passarino. Everything was now set for the final game, & David seemed a bit drained by his super performance in the prior match. Paul Willey was still riding high, & the final game victory netted him the $1500 first place check. David was also rewarded for his consistency with his biggest NABI prize check to date of $750. Diaz Cleans Up With Donkee Title & Hits Mystery Series at Del Rio Lanes

This weekend featured a step ladder event. Match 1 fea-tured Arnie Schroeder vs. Bret Haynes, Both bowlers came out the first 4 frames with 2 strikes and 2 10 pins each, but Bret re-aled of the last 9 strikes in a row for a route 287 to 243. Match 2 pitted Bret to our #2 seed Luis Diaz, this time Luis came out strong with a turkey and taking the early lead, then Bret came back with a turkey of his own in frames 3 thru 5, but another ringing 10 pin. Luis threw 2 more doubles in the match while Bret couldn’t carry on the left lane, Luis takes it 257 to 222. Now the dream match was on, our #2 seed versus the #1 seed Bud Zagorski who lapped the field with his +205 score. Both bowlers started off with spares, but Bud got a little tired opening the next three frames,

while Luis kept sparing, then in frames 4 thru 6 Luis threw a turkey at Bud and having him against the ropes up 50, then Mr Bud came up and threw the next 5, one more and he would take the lead in the match as Luis kept clean with spare strike the rest of the game, but fell one shot shot short as Luis takes it 238 to 224.

Long Time supporter Luis Diaz picks up his 3RD career title this weekend. .Luis was throwing a Lane Master Ter-minator drilled by Ed Enlow Sr of Enlow Bowling Supply in Long Beach. Luis sports personal best of a 299 game and 789 series. When he is not enjoying bowling, Luis works as an office manager of CRS for the past 33 years. Luis is single and has 5 grown children and 2 grandchildren. Luis would

like to thank the Donkee Tour staffers for their support and for sponsoring the event. We at the Donkee tour would like to thank Mike and the staff of Del Rio Lanes for hosting another fun and high scoring event

Our Mystery game was a carryover as no one hit a 119 game. Mystery series was hit by our champion today Luis Diaz with a 575 series, good thing he bowled a second time. It was good for an additional $450. Game will be worth $400 and series $100 at Bowling Square June 8th.

A couple of events ago a typographical error was made in the spelling of one of our bowlers who cashed at Valley View. Mr Rico “Black Widow” Veney. Our apologies for this oversight. The eyes aren’t what they used to be!!

the tournament was a 297 shot by Jen Richter of Sheboygan, Wis. The high series was a 752 shot by Kari Watson which helped her Bohn Zone Chicks Classic Division team take the lead on April 24.

Two records were set by senior women. Emma Hen-drickson, 99, of Morris County, N.J., tied the record for oldest participant in tournament his-tory. Also, Mini Tvaska, 90, of St. Petersburg, Fla., broke the participation record by at-tending her 62nd consecutive Women’s Championship. She marks the fifth woman so far this year who has participated in 50 or more Women’s Cham-pionships.

The last time Detroit hosted the Women’s Championships was in 1953. That year 5,000 teams competed and there was a special appearance by movie star Jayne Mansfield which was captured in photos now on display. Mansfield’s barefoot ball delivery while wearing a strapless party dress was one of the crowning moments for the tiered crowd seated behind her.

It’s tradition when partici-pating in the Women’s Cham-pionships for teams to bring and receive five gift bags to exchange with their lane-mates. The bags typically contain items reflecting the givers’ home town or state, including t-shirts, pins or other small items.

Best-selling food items in-clude sandwiches and burgers, with chicken by far the most requested item overall. The total loaves of bread consumed by tournament participants was 672 and 5,040 buns were used. The most desired drink was bottled water, with 2,880 downed.

Of the many Detroit-area attractions, two popular sight-seeing destinations are Dear-born’s Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village, and the Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, casinos.

Looking ahead to the 2009 USBC Women’s Champion-ships in Reno, more than 4,300 teams already have registered. The 2010 USBC Women’s Championships in El Paso will mark the first time the event will take place in an arena setting.

“The USBC is implement-ing a lot of new ideas, many of which have come from the bowlers themselves,” said Tournament Manager James Lamb. “A lot of women con-tinue to love this sport and this tournament and we want to give them the best experience possible.”

Mach, the man who drills his balls for the title.

The excitement was build-ing. Ronnie and Danielwent at it but Ronnie brought his “A Game” and hada tough match on the tough conditions. Ronnie emerged with a 226-213 win. Daniel was 3rd and $1,250. His highest finish thus far and he performed so great! Cordero was now off to the title game!!

The stage was set for the title match. Ronnie led off with a split. Mach then opened and struck but Ronnie countered with a turkey to take the lead as Ben again opened in the 3rd. Then Ben trying to catch couldn’t find the line, and couldn’t double and to no avail. It was Ronnie 178/213--138/157 and the title and $10,000 was his, and rightfully so!! This Gentleman is most deserving and comes from a fine family. His wife Rina is also an ABTA member! Ronnie rarely ever misses an ABTA event and we are lucky to have such a fine man bowl with us. His Friends were quite proud. Great People here! Congrats Senor Ronnie, and another

title is in your future!Nice Bowling by Ben Mach

who did so well. Almost got the win! He is a past champ and will win again soon and also is a great Guy. He had a little to do with the title as he drilled Ronnie’s ball and quite well I might add. Good things happen to the good Guys and Ben is definitely that!

Fine bowling by Daniel Ruiz in 3rd. Let’s not forget Jerry Ernst, and James Samson in 4th and 5th. They could have gone for the title also.

Our overall high qualifiers this week were Sol Cericos+137 for the men and Leilani Calizo +94 led the femmes, good for free entries.

Sol Cericos drew the Match Series this week, a 572 which unbelievably was NOT Matched by over 700 bowlers. So we will estimate the Match Series to be $1,600 this week. Big Bucks at Midtown!!!

The Match Game #3 was UNmatched due to the 286 game drawn Ben Mach. We will go for a Max of $3,500 this week with the balance going to a reserve pot .Big Bucks at Midtown!

The 3-6-9 went for $1,000. Dennis Cordero out lasted the field, but missed and got a $100

consolation. We have a $1,100 Pot this Saturday at Midtown Big Bucks at Midtown. The Doubles were won by “You Guessed It” Ronnie “Ace” Cor-dero and Marcus Lemons. Their 1420 got them $250 edging “Ace” and Blandino Atienza 1396 $200. Claude “Spider-man” Dottin, and Eugene “Big Cat” Haynes 3rd 1394 $180. We paid 24 places and $2,310 in the doubles!

Ronnie Cordero is from Long Beach and married to Rina with a pretty little daugh-ter Gabby. He used a Roto Nep-tune drilled by ABTA Member Ben Mach at Westminster Lanes.. He thanks his family for support and “ The Dragon, Alan Basto Hermie and Tres for support! and the ABTA staff and many others which are too many to name.

Ben Mach is from West-minster and used a Roto Grip Neptune Radical drilled by himself! He is single and avail-able. Ben thanks the ABTA and Directors and West Covina for a great Event, buddy Minh Dang, Tri Vo, Tim Tran, Tres, Marife and Tina.

Dan Ruiz is from Diamond Bar, and used a Storm Tour drilled by Leonard his brother.. He is married to Kaitlyn and

thanks family, friends and the ABTA for support.

Thanks, as always, to the Super West Covina Lanes. Thanks to Russ, Asst GM/ Mgr for his expert help and all of YOU! We’ll be back there on our next schedule.

This week, we visit Los Angeles, and popular Midtown Bowl. Qualifying times in this 0ne day event: Squads will run at 12:00-1:00-2:30 & 4:00 with Semifinals at 5:45 PM. Its History folks as Ronnie Cordero enters the archives as our latest champion. See You at Midtown for a good one and Get those Las Vegas rooms paid ASAP. They are due in full by June 21.

Last But not least!! Special thanks to Chad and Staff for the

Three 300 Games Bowled By Matt Murtishaw

by Frank WeilerMURRIETA—Matt Mur-

tishaw, son of Citrus Belt bowl-ing great and former PBA champion Jim Murtishaw, re-cently bowled a perfect game for three consecutive weeks in his Country Express League at Cal Oaks Bowl in Murrieta. Each of the 300 games was the first game of the night. Matt used his Track Power Machine to roll all three perfectos. The ball was drilled by his dad, proprietor of Fast Lanes Pro Shop within Cal Oaks Bowl. Matt’s high series for the three weeks was 758.

Young Murtishaw is twen-ty-two and only started bowling again in 2007, after staying away from the sport for six years. We all knew he’d be back, with his dad a PBA cham-pion and Mom Anita one of the top Citrus Belt lady bowlers of the 1990s. She led all associa-tion women in average several times during that decade.

Since coming back to bowl-ing, Matt has been taking les-sons from his dad. Just a week before the first perfecto his dad had him working on getting the loop out of his backswing. The form change worked to perfec-tion! Practicing forty to fifty games a week now, Matt has raised his average thirty pins to 210 this season. His goal is to become an exempt PBA player and a regular on television.

While these perfect games were Matt’s first certified per-fectos, he did roll an incredible 280-300-300=880 practice series this past March.

Matt wants his Mom and dad to know he loves them and thanks them both for their coaching and support. Thank you Bowling News for support-ing Citrus Belt bowlers.

We like to thank our host, Mr. Scott Poddig, the proprietor of the center, and his workers, and the bowlers that entered on the Memorial Day Holiday weekend. We also like to thank our coverage sponsors, EBONITE INTERNATIONAL CO, and GEORGE ABRAHA-MSEN, REALTOR for Tarbell REALTORS, 949-812-9990, and to Sherry Davis for doing our brackets.

Tvaska Set To Break Record at 2008 USBC

Women’s ChampionshipCANTON, Mich. - When

Mini Tvaska stepped onto the lanes in 1947 in Grand Rapids, Mich., to compete in the United States Bowling Congress Wom-en’s Championships for the first time, she had no idea it would become an annual tradition.

More than six decades later, Tvaska will return to her home state of Michigan to break the all-time record for participation in the Women’s Championships as she competes in the event for the 62nd consecutive year.

The 90-year-old native of Dearborn, Mich., who now lives in St. Petersburg, Fla., will break the record on Tues-day, May 20 at 3 p.m. when she is scheduled to compete in team event at Super Bowl Lanes. Mary Covell of Chi-cago competed in 61 Women’s Championships, the last com-ing in 1992.

“I’ve been planning my trip back to Detroit for awhile now,” Tvaska said. “It will be close to where I grew up in Dearborn. I’m feeling fine now and still bowling in city and state tournaments. Even after all these years bowling, I’m still excited by tournament play.”

Tvaska took up the sport of bowling for the first time in her mid-20s. Since her first Women’s Championship at the age of 29, Tvaska has traveled an estimated 150,000 miles across the United States to ev-ery tournament location.

Throughout her consecutive streak, Tvaska has battled many obstacles but none compared to last year’s battle to get to the Women’s Championships in North Carolina.

“I had a very though year last year,” Tvaska said. “I fell and injured my shoulder and needed months of rest and rehabilitation. I was only able to bowl one game before that tournament.”

Tvaska is just one exam-ple of the dedication many women have in competing in the Women’s Championships. Approximately 2,500 active bowlers have competed in 25 or more tournaments.

San Gabriel Valley USBC Associationby A. A. Turtle

WEST COVINA—The Annual open meeting for SGVUSBC was held on April 6, 2008 at BRC West Covina Lanes. It was a very sad turn out of supporters, we only had 26 people show and 16 of those were board members.

Remember the association is here for you the bowlers to see that the rules and regulations are being followed. This means if possible you should be attending these open meetings and make sure that the individuals who are being elected to the board are the ones you feel will be doing the best for SGV.

This is where you find out what is happening with the bowling industries and how it will affect centers and leagues. Those in attendance elected the following individuals to serve on the board for another term or a new term.

Rosie Parker was reelected as President, Dallas Perkins was in a close race and won 2nd Vice President and the following were elected for a 2 year term as directors: Dolores Perkins, Mark Parker, Kathy Piguet & Joseph Hilke. The delegates were elected for those wishing to attend the 2009 State and National Conventions.

For National Convention being held in Reno, NV April 29 – May 3 you elected Linda Johnson, Rosie Parker, Chris Pilios, Linda O’Hagan & Dallas Perkins as delegates with the alternates to be Annette Anderson, Jo O’Dell & Carol Mancini. CA State Convention to be held in Riverside June 2009, delegates are An-nette Anderson, Chris Pilios, Linda O’Hagan, Kathy Piguet, Jo O’Dell & Janet Loucks.

Headquarters had sent a letter stating that the awards would be changed to once in a lifetime. The feed back was not good so at this time they are postponing and change to a later date. Also that National head quarters will be moving from Wisconsin to Texas by the end of the year. All associations will need to be registered with the RVP program by August 1, 2008.

Your local has done this and are in the process of working with the bowling centers to have all who are involved with youth bowlers and programs be registered in this program is to protect the kids.

At the award luncheon we had 30 bowlers along with family & friends to see the winners from City Tournament and the Singles Tournament be presented with their awards. It wasn’t a big turn out but I believed that all had a grand time.

This coming Sunday June 1, 2008 at Chaparral Lanes we will be hosting our Annual Memorial No-Tap Tournament check-in at 12:00 pm and bowl at 1 pm. Cost is $25.00 per person and open to all that are interested in helping to raise money for CANCER RESEARCH.

The next upcoming events are as followed and watch for flyers at your center and in the bowling news: Sunday August 31 at Oak Tree Lanes fund raiser for USO of ONTARIO

Saturday & Sunday Sept 13 & 14 at BRC Covina Bowl Greater Southern California First Annual Singles open to all certified bowl-ers from San Gabriel Valley, Antelope Valley, Citrus Belt, Imperial Valley, North County, North Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Diego & Southern LA County. Sunday Oct 19th at Chaparral Lanes will be the Mixed Doubles.

Starting in October we will be going to each center during your leagues asking for donations for Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) Also the office has flyers for some of the up coming CA State events: Sr. Women’s Tournament entries close Aug. 1, 2008 Prince & Princess Tournament entries close Sept. 15, 2008CA State Senior Bowling Championships entries close Oct 1, 2008.

STUDIO CITY — We are on the third part of our unend-ing saga. This week we traveled to Tampa, Nebraska and Queens. It’s been a rough month but our bowlers always make us feel at home. They show us that Studio City is the real home of bowling.

ADULTS In Tampa we went  to Splitsville Alley  and  saw exactly what you expect: a  lot of splits. Not any on the lanes but on many overweight bowlers waistbands. Our in-shape bowlers pushed up their scores this week. Here are the strengthed scores: Funseekers: Bart Mills 280/700, Brian Bell 267/694, Jeff Pifko 688,  Isabelle Vincent  203/549,  Lisa Frobisher  529, Keane Murakami 267. JUNIORS Again the idea of retirement pops up when great achieve-ments are met. Nebraska, what a great place  to  retire  to and bowl at. Especially Cornhusker Lanes, yet none of their games can even come close to Nikolai Berk. He bowled a 300 game and showed everyone around the Corn Belt that he is the best in the West.

SENIORS, LADIES There is only one place to find love, Queens, N.Y. At least that’s what Prince Akeem told us from Coming to America. He may have been able to listen to Sweet Chocolate, but he never bowled as good as our seniors. They bowl like a fresh McDowell’s sandwich. Here’s the scores: Senior Social: Bob Garrick 265/755, Charlene Gaffney 235/653, Allan Lotta 196/533, Teri Bonato 197/517, Christine Stark 504, Ruth Grallia 238. LA Rocks San Jose TNBA Junior Western Regional

by Otha Stubblefield

RENO—In spite of rising fuels costs and hectic last minute cast changes, three teams representing the Los Angeles TNBA Senate bravely traveled to the San Jose area for the 33rd annual TNBA Junior Western Regional Tournament on March 29 and 30th. Joining Los Angeles at AMF Mission Lanes in Milpitas were teams from the San Jose Senate and fellow SoCal Association, the Inland Empire Senate.

Six teams in the highest average Class 1 Division were compet-ing for the tournament’s top prize, a chance to battle against the Class 1 winning teams from the Eastern, Southern and Central TNBA Junior Regionals. This roll-off will take place at the site of the National TNBA Tournament in Reno, Nevada.

After three hard games, the two Los Angeles teams took the top 2 spots in Class 1. Southwest Swansong #1, aptly named be-cause Southwest Bowl is closing, led their brother team, Ultimate Lightening, by over 100 pins. The team members of Southwest Swansong #1 are Matthew Jones, sophomore at Centennial High School in Compton; Claudell Redwine, Crenshaw Arts/Tech Charter School graduate and freshman at LA Southwest College; Darren Hawkins, Inglewood High School graduate and sophomore at San Jose State; and Jeremy Glover, junior at Milliken High School in Long Beach. Team Captain Jeremy Glover led scoring for his team with an impressive 748 series. His final game stopped just shy of perfection after leaving a bucket on his 11th ball for a spectacular 286 game.

Brent Shern, Captain of Ultimate Lightening, pushed his team hard, but fell short of the crown by a little over 100 pins. Brent is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran High School in Torrance and currently attends El Camino Junior College, also in Torrance. Leadoff bowler Eric Torrence graduates from Prairie Vista Middle School in Lawndale next month; Teddie Carter is a Washington Prep High School graduate and Josh “08” Gartrell is a senior at Long Beach Polytechnic High.

The remaining Los Angeles Senate team, Southwest Swansong #2 was in the Class 4 division, and grabbed the spotlight just like the other two teams. Jon’Tel Smith, Demenia Redwine, Shirniece and Antone Beeks beat out their competition to win Class 4. All three LA Senate teams adjourned to Dave & Buster’s to celebrate their team trifecta.

All of our teams and parents really appreciated the work that went into making this tournament a success. There are so many people to thank in addition to Melvin, Sue, Angie, Veronica and Dewann Clark,. I have to give special thanks to Matthew Jones, not because he was on the winning team, but because he agreed to go at the last minute – not a small feat when you have to travel 400 miles to the tournament site.

This weekend, Jeremy, Claudell, Matthew, Darren, a host of parents and I will travel to Reno to bowl against the winning teams from the Eastern, Central and Southern Regions. I know we’re going to do well and proudly represent the West.

TNBA (L-R) Matthew Jones, Claudell Redwine, Darren Hawk-ins, Jeremy Glover, and Coach Otha Stubblefield.

CONGRATULATIONS ON A 300 GAME

OUR 2ND JUNIORIN A MONTH

TO BOWL PERFECT

EYE ON ENTERTAINMENTA FAREWELL TO EMPLOYEES LOS ANGELES — In my last column of Southwest Bowl’s de-mise, I purposely omitted my Employees — so that I could properly skewer them. So... if they have a sense of humor...here goes. DAVE THEISEN — He began as a Deskman in 1960. When Gwen Morillo retired, Dave took over as Night Manager. 48 years!! Wow! He looks like Moses, but he is the only guy I know who can sum up the league funds. IN HIS HEAD!! Then there are our three female Bartenders. Marguerite was hired by my Dad and has been here over 30 years. She loves to decorate. Desi loves the Indianapolis Colts, and Charlotte is a whiz at throwing parties. Three beautiful human beings. Kudos to our Mechanics: The rugged Lionel and the artistic Greg. They kept our 1958 Classic machinces going, no problem. On Desk, we have the characters: Michael is the Old Pro — smart, prompt, honest, charming. Willie is the wise-acre. He can keep a straight face while he pulls a joke on you. Raymond and Jay are the handsome young studs who attract the Femme Fatales, and Wilfred attemps to follow suit. Our Cleanup guys are led by Margarito, an amazingly-strong guy with lots of kids (including Twins). Armando and Oswald make up the trio of multi-talents — pin-chasers, clean-up guys, bar keepers. Miguel Villegas and his family tend the coffee shop. If there’s a party, Mig is there with food and a big grin. Otha is our Junior Coach. A more family-loving, kid-oriented guy you will never find — even if he works at U.C.L.A., neighbor/brother school to U.S.C. The Dessert of SW Bowl is the tiniest one here — who walks zip, zip, zooey in her 90-pound frame. DOTTIE HONDA, book-keeper, knows where every penny goes. She is the one who will be missed the most when we close. She also keeps me out of mischief with her knowledge of the Law. Girl Friday, advisor, Bon Vivant, our Love to Dottie is unbounded. All for now. If we’ve missed someone, don’t worry, I’ll find a way to say goodbye.

Til that time,I shall remain

/s/ Ken Del Conte

P.S. Don’t forget. On Monday, June 2, 2008, we are auctioning off everything inside the bowling alley. See you there.

Rocky Marsh Doubles Makes Summer Debut To Boast Sizzling Scores

by Joy McGregorThe Rocky Marsh Mixed Doubles started the summer session

on Friday morning at Linbrook Bowl in fine fashion and set the bar high. Even the hustle and bustle of opening day couldn’t deter our detemined bowlers.

Our lanes were primed and ready for some HOT scores and we were not disappointed. Our “Hottest” score was turned in by none other than “Big Bad” John Conway. John fired games of 217-246-257 for 720 and then tossed a scorching 279 finale to take top honors at 999.

Next in line was another sub, “Too Tuff” Tony Hale who took his turn and threw some heat on gamnes of 210-267-263 for 740 and added a 249 to post 989.

Dapper Terry Brent burned the wood with his games of 207-258 and a sizzling 279 for 744 and added 234 to register 978.

Jack Wilson, new to the league, made himself known and left his mark on games of 248-209-225 and another 248 to post 930.

E.J. Rogers, no stranger to being in the lime light, rolled games of 234-224-217 and 246 to record 921.

More HOT scores: Eva Munson 249-889, Tim Blough 251-884, Bob Gosnell 235-883, Lloyd Thierry 256-882, Willy Bor-denave 237-879, Tony Chaco 258-878, Rose Williams 228-872, Kantral Williams 257-866, Ron Marcus 224-842, John Phillips 257-842, Frank Bellinder 279-835, Juan Sandoval 235-825, Gino Vassallo 212-814, Al Lara 266, Hong Kha 233, Carl Adinolfi 228, Alan Bloom 225, Ed Hermance 224, Marie Barbush 219, Kyle Osterman 218, April Anderson 215, Jerry Knight 214, Tom Keehn 213, Rey Ortiz 213, Larry Green 211, Ed Mote 210, Gloria Ferrulli 204, Ron Douglass 213, Johnny Munson 203, Shig Shozi 203, Joy McGregor 201 and Fred Voysey 200.

We all welcome Fred Voysey back to bowling after suffering a mild heart attack earlier in the season. So glad to have you back Fred and looking so fit!

Hope everyone enjoyed their day off to party, count their blessings and to honor our fallen soldiers and give thanks to our Veterans this Memorial Day. Until next week...
