The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary This June 19th we will be celebrating the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the following day, the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Sacred Heart of Jesus novena begins nineteen days after Pentecost. It consists of a Holy Hour of reparation recalling Jesus’ suffering in the “Agony of the Garden.” During this Holy Hour, we pray that all of the world may come to Jesus and accept and believe in Him. Since, we hold that our Mother Mary is always at our Lord’s side, a Novena with Mass honoring her heart is also celebrated for nine first Saturdays. It is believed that the Benedictine and Cistercian monks began the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (The Sacred Heart of Jesus, CNA, https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/the-most-sacred-heart-of-jesus-275,1 ). However, “Margaret Mary was chosen by Christ to arouse the Church to a realization of the love of God symbolized by the heart of Jesus” (Saint Margaret Mary of Alacoque” Franciscan Media, 1). Like every saint, Margaret Mary strove for holiness. When she was a child she was gravely ill and during this time she promised that she would become a nun. However, when she became a teenager she changed her mind and contemplated the vocation to Holy Matrimony. It was not until one night that she was returning from a dance that she had a vision where she saw our Lord Jesus being scourged. “Margaret believed she had betrayed Jesus, by pursing the pleasures of the world rather than her religious vocation” (Saint of the Day: Margaret Mary of Alacoque, Angelus, https://angelusnews.com/faith/saint-of-the-day/saint-of-the-day-margaret-mary-alacoque/ , 1). Although she became a nun, her visions were dismissed by her superiors. With the help of Father Claude de la Colombiere, Margaret’s visions were eventually deemed divine. Margaret even received hostile treatment from her religious sisters. Margaret decided to offer up her sufferings, especially from her fellow nuns, for the reparation of sins. Even though the devotion did not become widespread during Margaret’s lifetime, she NEVER strayed away from her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. When Margaret was dying, and as she was being anointed, she said, “I need nothing but God, and to lose myself in the heart of Jesus” (Saint Margaret Mary of Alacoque, Franciscan Media, https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-margaret-mary-alacoque/ 1). She died at the age of 43. The Immaculate Heart of Mary reminds us that our Blessed Mother’s heart was pierced twice: when Simeon told her a sword would pierce her heart and at Jesus’ crucifixion. Mary did not falter and maintained steadfast in her faith; even as she saw her Son being murdered. Mother Mary participated fully in our redemption by NOT PREVENTING Jesus to die for our sins, AND THEREBY EXPOSING THE INJUSTICE OF SIN AND DEATH. Hence, “[t]he aim of [her] devotion is to unite mankind to God through Mary’s heart, and this process involves the ideas of consecration and reparation” (The Immaculate Heart of Mary, CNA, https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/resources/mary/popular-marian-devotions/the-

immaculate-heart-of-mary 1, ). We are called to have a loving and merciful heart like Jesus does. We are called to turn away from sin and to do good. We are called to follow the examples of Jesus and Mary and Margaret Mary. If we are called to the priesthood or religious life then let us ask the intercession of Margaret Mary of Alacoque or of Saint Jean Vianney or of Saint Charles Borromeo that we may have the courage to properly discern this vocation. If we are called to the married life let us ask the intercession of Saint Joseph or of Mother Mary or of Saints Louis and Marie Martin. Let us be obedient to Jesus and live out our vocations as best we can and guide the world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through our own personal conversion. Let us pray for an increase in devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of

our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your

mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole

and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health

and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask

this through our Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen
