2014 4-H Livestock Rule Changes/Updates State Fair & County Fair

For more information follow this link: Iowa 4-H Livestock Show Requirements

General Changes Horse Increase entry limit from 5 classes to 6 classes per exhibitor State Fair Classes Deleted o Reining

State Fair NEW Classes o Miniature Horse Halter

o Walk/Trot

o 2/3 year old Western Pleasure

o Of those 5, max. of 2 can be leased

o NO leasing of halter horses

o Leased horses must have a completed lease

form to office 4hOnline o Each horse can only be ID’ed by ONE 4-H’er,

unless: There are more 4-H’ers in a family than horses – for example, 4-H’er A and B could both ID horse X o 4-H’ers can ID horses in 4-H and FFA as long as they

are DIFFERENT horses – for example, horse A and B in 4-H, horse C and D in FFA o State Fair exhibitors will still have to choose to show

in either the 4-H horse show OR the FFA horse show, not both; but, they could show FFA at county and then 4-H at state fair (with different horses)

MEAT GOATS Again in 2014: All meat goats (wethers AND does) MUST have a 4-H tag in place and wethers must have retinal images. SWINE ALL swine need a tag for show reporting purposes.

commercial ewes must be slick shorn upon arrival to the Fairgrounds. Animals which are not slick shorn will not be allowed to stall or enter the check-in line. Suggested fleece length for purebred breeding sheep is ¼ inch with ¾ inch maximum, with the exception being for wool breeds which have no maximum length.” o As noted, “slick shorn” does not apply to

purebred “fitted” ewes Again in 2014: ALL State Fair sheep must have a 4-H tag and retinal images o Market lambs, commercial ewes, purebred

breeding ewes o Entered as “Sheep, weighed-in” in 4hOnline

by county staff o Be SURE the “Retinal Images” box is

checked in 4hOnline o If there are no retinal images for sheep, it

will not show at the state fair

MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING

Waubonsie Horse Camp

The 2014 Waubonsie 4-H Horse Camp registration is open! All 4-H members, 4th through 12th grade, who can ride a horse inde-pendently, are encouraged to join the experience. Clinics will involve horsemanship, reining, riding skill development and speed/roping op-portunities. Sessions will challenge each camper from the beginner to the ad-vanced senior.

The camp registration fee is $60 for the entire weekend and is due by Monday, May 19, 2014.

ALL registration documents are available on the Fremont County Extension website at: Iowa State Extension and Outreach, Fremont County or by

calling 712-374-2351. NOTICE: Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Fremont Coun-ty is learning and adhering to the suggested protocol regarding the very contagious EHV-1 (Equine Herpes Virus) and related EHM (Equine Her-pesvirus Myeloencephalopathy.) At this time, we are still taking registrations for our 2014 Waubonsie Horse Camp. We continue to communicate with Mike Anderson, State 4-H Livestock Specialist; Dr. Peggy Auwerda, ISU Animal Science; and Dr. Rozann Stay, Iowa Eq-uine Veterinary Care. An increase in, and strict compliance to Bio-Security will be maintained before, during and after camp. Worst case scenario, Waubonsie Horse Camp would be modified into a “Horseless Horse” camp with only one overnight stay.

Senior 4-H members are encouraged to apply for camp counselor posi-tions. Counselor applications are due Friday, May 16, 2014.

Counselors need to be 16-18 years old, be confident and knowledgeable riders, and willing to provide leadership to a small group of 4-H youth.

Clover Kids is one component of this program. Clover Kid members are eligible to participate in developmentally age-appropriate opportunities at local county fairs. This regulation was established by the Clover Kids Curriculum Team at the Iowa State University Extension and Out-reach State offices.

Clover Kids Livestock Shows – held in conjunction with the species-related 4-H and FFA Shows. Open to all children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade enrolled in Fremont County 4-H by May 15th and a Fremont County Fair en-try form completed and turned into the office by July 1. Clover Kids are NOT allowed to show large animals such as swine, horses and cattle (beef and dairy). All other animals must be less than 200 pounds in order to be shown.

Clover Kids will follow the same health requirements as all 4-H and FFA shows.

Any female animal in season cannot be shown.

Clover Kids animals must come properly restrained or contained. Appropriate examples include on a leash or in a box, cage, etc. For poultry and rabbits, cages ARE NOT provided.

Stalls for goats or sheep are limited and held for 4-H and FFA participants first. In the event no stalls are available for Clover Kids, animals may be brought on the day of the show, an hour before the show begins.

Clover Kids and animals or pets must be supervised by an adult at all times. The adult is responsible for both the Clover Kid and the animal or pet.

Participants will receive a participation ribbon; no premium money will be given.

Clover Kids may show animals in the following classes. Division 4 - Meat and Dairy Goats Division 6 - Market Sheep Division 7 - Breeding Sheep Division 9 – Poultry Division 10 – Rabbits Division 11 – Dogs Division 11.1 – Cats Division 12 – Other Pets
