WELCOME

D E A R F R I E N D S ,

LIVE FROM UA! Welcome to the 2016 President’s Circle Dinner. What better venue for our celebration of Excellence in Teaching at Ursuline than the learning environment our students experience each and every day!

There is no doubt in my mind that teachers are the greatest asset of any school. Here is what a

recent graduate said about Ursuline teachers at the start of her senior year:

“My time at Ursuline has shown me how much the teachers truly care about their students.

They possess a passion for their subject that inspires students to be excited about learning.

In the classroom, they take into consideration everyone’s different learning styles and are

always available to help. Their involvement in the Ursuline community proves their love for

the school and their desire to make Ursuline the best learning environment possible. It is

because of them that I love learning and going to school so much.”

The Pillars of Teaching Excellence, developed by our faculty, provide the fundamental values

and teaching qualities expected of teachers as they guide our students on their formational

journeys through Ursuline Academy of Dallas.

We are proud of our dedicated, competent, and caring teachers who are ready and eager to

help their students create knowledge, risk new things, and above all, nurture their strengths

and dreams.

This evening it is our great pleasure to provide you with a small window into the world of

teaching and learning at Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Thank you for your incredible generosity

and Serviam spirit which inspire our work for the young people we teach, guide, and care for.

Yours in Christ,

GretchenZ.Kane

President

“Rather, regard yourselves as ministers and servants, reflecting

that you have more need to serve them than they have to be served by you.”

PAT BROWN O’BRIEN ’52

AND NEIL O’BRIEN

Spanning more than four generations, the Ursuline tradition runs deep in the O’Brien

family. Pat and Neil O’Brien have four married children, 16 grandchildren, of whom eight are

married, and seven great-grandchildren.

They are the parents of Cynthia O’Brien Robinson ’76, Lauretta O’Brien Todd ’79, Scot O’Brien,

who is married to Ann Wunderlick O’Brien ’78, and Rick O’Brien. They are grandparents of

Ursuline graduates Laurie Robinson Schmidt ’02, Jill Robinson Hylden ’04, and Molly O’Brien ’11.

Neil is also the son of Alice Hickey O’Brien ’22, and the uncle, nephew, and cousin of 15 other

Ursuline graduates.

Committed to servant leadership, Pat and Neil have been active in many Catholic,

philanthropic, and civic organizations throughout the community. They are loyal friends and

devoted supporters of Ursuline Academy, and have played important roles in the growth of

Ursuline education in Dallas.

Pat has served on the Ursuline Foundation Board and Neil has served on the Ursuline

Academy Board. Both have been volunteer leaders for Academy capital campaigns.

Pat is a past member of the Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities, past Chairman of the

Board of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, and past member of the Board of Trustees of

the Notre Dame School of Dallas. Among his many involvements, Neil served for eight years

as President of The Catholic Foundation and has been a member of the Cooper Institute

Board of Trustees for 35 years.

Pat O’Brien attended St. Mary’s of Notre Dame and graduated from Southern Methodist University.

A graduate of Jesuit College Preparatory School, Neil O’Brien earned his undergraduate

degree at Rice University, a law degree at SMU, and postgraduate honors at Georgetown

University Law School. He is a retired partner at the Dallas law firm of Gardere and Wynne.

Pat enjoys playing bridge, and Neil is

teaching himself to play the banjo.

The 2016 President’s Award is presented

to Pat and Neil O’Brien, with gratitude

for their extraordinary leadership

and Serviam spirit.

Ursuline educators show enthusiasm and knowledge about their subject byX pursuing academic depth while fostering a deep connection to Serviam within a global societyX teaching with both passion and creativityX incorporating innovations from their own and other disciplinesX creating a culture of high expectations for themselves and their students

May you sustain and carry out vigorously and faithfully the charge laid upon you. St. AngelA’S Prologue to the CounSelS

Ursuline educators continually foster an attitude of cooperation and partnership with students, colleagues, and parents by

X collaborating with colleagues in other disciplines to help students draw connections across subjectsX being humble before the challenge of learning, not merely delivering knowledge but entering into meaningful dialogue with students, fellow teachers, and administratorsX setting and communicating clear expectations through organization, preparation, and consistency X promoting open communication with students and parents

Cling together with bonds of charity, esteeming one another, helping one another, supporting one another in Christ Jesus. St. AngelA’S 9th CounSel

Ursuline educators seek to develop themselves by self-reflection, interaction with colleagues, professional development opportunities, and subject based research by

X displaying a disposition of curiosity and life-long learning for and with the studentsX modeling up-to-date pedagogy

And if, according to times and circumstances, the need arises to make new rules or do something differently, do it prudently and with good advice. St. AngelA’S lASt legACy

Reflecting the writings of St. Angela Merici, Ursuline educators demonstrate the following pillars of excellence:

Ursuline educators promote the mission by exhibiting a disposition to teach in an all-girls Catholic environment by

X valuing teaching as a vocation and ministryX providing an environment from which to engage ethically, critically, and empathetically with their society and the world at largeX living out a commitment to ServiamX serving as role models for students and other faculty and staff members

Give good example – teaching more by what you do than what you say. St. AngelA’S 5th CounSel

Ursuline educators act in a loving and empathetic manner with their students byX helping students to develop a strong sense of the dignity inherent in themselves and othersX actively listening and communicating with students individually while providing productive feedbackX supporting students outside of the classroom, encouraging them to recognize talents other than academic successX developing their craft with the consistent understanding of their students’ needs

You will achieve more with kindness and gentleness than with harshness and strong rebukes. St. AngelA’S 2nd CounSel

It’s Teaching Excellence in Action!Tonight you are invited to participate in two sample classes taught by our very own Ursuline faculty. While this is only a glimpse into life at UA, we hope that the evening will give you a taste of the art of teaching that our students experience every day.

Teacher: Terri FergusonPERFORMING ARTSClass Title: Acting 101 – Warmups and TrustTwo things every actor must be able to do: have a nimble tongue for speaking and the ability to trust those sharing the stage with you. We’ll start off by learning some physical and vocal warm-ups, then end the lesson with a quick trust exercise.

Teacher: Tammy YungMATHEMATICSClass Title: The Wonders of a CircleThis interactive Geometry lesson uses a circle to create triangles, trapezoids, rhombi, pyramids, and tetrahedrons. Your lesson will reach a stunning geometric finale with the creation of an icosahedron!

Teacher: Pat MendinaENGLISHClass Title: The Fish BowlThe study of English at Ursuline encompasses not only the critical exploration of various genres of literature but also the development of personal voice through the writing process and discussion.
