CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE QUARTERLYThis issue marks the 40th Anniversary of the Alumni Quarterly which was created as a way to communicate with alumni about Ursuline’s 75th jubilee celebration in 1980. The initial black and white magazine evolved into the full-color, 16-page publication that is mailed today to 12,000 alumni in every state in the continental U.S.

Saint Angela Merici (the foundress of the Ursuline Sisters’) instructed her Company to “keep up with the times.” Ursuline has followed her philosophy by engaging our graduates through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the weekly e-newsletter ~ forms of communication that were unheard of in 1980. Alumni are invited to join the conversation @UrsulineIrish.

Why I give to Ursuline High School

For me, it’s one way of adhering to the biblical admonition of teaching the Lord’s commands to “your children and your children’s children” (Deuteronomy 4:9). I am also mindful of the great commission “to go and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19). While it is an individual responsibility for me now, I’ve also come to the realization that it’s time for me to rely on future generations. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man strengthens another” (Proverbs 27:17). But, in this case, one generation strengthens the next. I’m thankful for my experiences at the Academy, for the privilege of being able to contribute and for the hope that comes from my prayer for these future Ursuline generations.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE QUARTERLY URSULINE HONORS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI

Kathleen O’Neil Wolsonovich and Kevin J. McGuire were honored as the Distinguished Alumni Award recipients at The Feast of Saint Ursula Liturgy. Each year, this award is given to graduates of Ursuline High School who have distinguished themselves by dedicated service to our school and to the community at large.

Kathy Wolsonovich learned the meaning of the Ursuline High School motto of “Soli Deo Gloria” extremely well during her high school years and has lived that motto in her personal, professional and community life. She has been a constant advocate for Catholic education and health care in the communities where she has lived including Youngstown, Chicago and Orlando. She and her husband, Dr. Nicholas Wolsonovich, currently live in Poland, Ohio.

Kathy is a member of the Ursuline Class of 1966. She was a long-time member of Saint Edward Parish until moving to Chicago and is presently a member of Holy Family Parish in Poland. She and her husband, the late Glenn Christopher (Class of 1960), made sure that their three children all attended Saint Edward School and Ursuline High School: Glenn (Class of 1987), Suzie (Class of 1990) and Patrick (Class of 1996). Her stepsons – also attended Saint Edward School and Ursuline High School: Michael Wolsonovich (Class of 1992), Charles Wolsonovich (Class of 1994) and Mark Wolsonovich (Class of 1996). Kathy was very active while her children were at Saint Edward School as the head of the Home Room Mother’s Association, as an active member of the Home and School Association, and as a volunteer school nurse.

After the death of her husband Glenn Christopher, Kathy attended Youngstown State University and graduated with the final class of the Saint Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in 1996. She began her nursing career at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She also served as the Unit Manager of the Alzheimer’s Unit at the Assumption Village Nursing Home in North Lima. Kathy volunteered at the Prentice Women’s

Hospital in Chicago, the Florence Crittenton Home for unwed mothers and the Hotline for Abortion Prevention in Youngstown. She has been a strong supporter of the Joanie Abdu Breast Care Center, the Beatitude House, and the Jesus, Mary and Joseph Pregnancy Center in Orlando, Florida. Kathy is a member of the Junior League of Youngstown. Kathy has demonstrated her entrepreneurial and business acumen as the owner and operator of the Nature’s Way Plant and Art Shop in Maumee, Ohio.

Perhaps Kathy’s most significant contribution is the legacy of children, grandchildren and relatives who have attended Catholic schools. She has had three children, three step-children and 11 grandchildren who have attended Catholic schools. In addition, her father Robert graduated from Ursuline in 1932 and her brothers Dan and Dick were members of the Class of 1965. Four generations of Kathy’s family attended Ursuline. Thirty-two members of her family graduated from Ursuline High School. Her husband Nick served as Principal of Ursuline High School from 1982-1985.

Kevin J. McGuire was born and raised on the North Side of Youngstown. He is a 1976 graduate of Ursuline High School and a graduate of Youngstown State University. Kevin has been in the home health care industry for over 30 years. He has worked for Foley Medical and Family Home Medical locally, and at Health Infusion and Coram Health Care on a national level. Mr. McGuire founded mvi HomeCare with Dale Damioli in 1995. Mvi HomeCare, located on Belmont Avenue, is the premier provider of home health care services in northeast Ohio providing home health, hospice, infusion therapy and pharmacy services to patients, families and referral sources in the Valley for the past 23 years.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

My classmates from Ursuline in 1972 and I share a significant milestone this

year – a 65th birthday. I too get to sign up for Medicare and project my life beyond its working years as an inevitable outgrowth of this monumental anniversary. While as a priest I will be continuing in active ministry until at least age 70, I recognize that all the planning that has already been done and all the practical steps people have taken to secure a stable financial future in retirement have a real sense of “coming due” about them.

Beside the standard vehicles of a pension plan, Social Security eligibility and IRA’s of different stripes to draw from, I have the added benefit of owning a cash-valued whole life insurance policy which I took out through the Knights of Columbus when I was 40. I have never wavered from my original designation of Ursuline High School as beneficiary of that policy upon my death. Earlier this spring that policy fully matured, and I no longer pay into it with a regular salary deduction. I realized after a careful personal financial analysis that this policy could be useful to Ursuline,

my most desired charity, now, not waiting for my decease. My tax advisor and lawyer have confirmed that I can also gain a charitable deduction, perhaps over several upcoming years, by transferring ownership of the policy to UHS presently.

In the arena of planned giving, this type of transfer is truly a “win-win.” The donor benefits from what current tax law allows, and the school foundation gains a major gift which has appreciable cash and final value. I am thrilled to join the burgeoning Legacy Society of Ursuline donors who use insurance assets which are not necessary for estate purposes to make major gifts to our foundation. To those of my generation who would like to direct their philanthropy in this manner, just designate Ursuline Endowment Fund Inc. as the primary beneficiary of your policy, and the benefit will be paid to the school. Transfer ownership of a matured policy and obtain a charitable deduction on current - and possibly future - tax years. How great is that? Pretty special, I’d say!

Soli Deo Gloria

Fr. Richard Murphy ‘72

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

That’s how Shanon Tringhese Kneidel (’91)

describes the ambiance near Cleveland Chop, a Cleveland, Ohio steakhouse restaurant that she and her husband

Alan have owned since April 26, 2013. She

graduated from John Carroll University with a

Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 1995 and then earned a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Ashland University in 2003. Shanon has taught for 15 years and is currently the Reading Specialist at Menlo Park Academy, the only tuition-free school for gifted students in Ohio.

What made you decide to venture into the restaurant business?

“My husband graduated from Penn State University with a degree in hospitality management. When the company he was working for decided to close the restaurant he had been managing, we saw it as the perfect opportunity to reopen in the same space but as Cleveland Chop. We have a great location in the Warehouse District. I am most proud of the fact that we rehired any staff that wanted to come back, and six years later, we still have so many of them working for us as manager, bartenders and kitchen staff.” What are the challenges and opportunities of owning a restaurant?

“The food scene in Cleveland is very competitive. We need to have the best food and the best service at the right price to generate a clientele that will frequent our restaurant. The number of people moving downtown has greatly increased since we opened. We have several guests that consider us their neighborhood bar.

Our great happy hour offerings have really caught on in the neighborhood. We have many people come in before or after a concert, a play or a game. We are really looking forward to being a part of the Browns’ upcoming season. The stadium is walking distance from our place and we have a buffet brunch for every home game.”

What Ursuline teacher or class most influenced you and how?

“I truly loved and was influenced by Ms. McVicker and Ms. George. They took the time to get to know the students and were genuine in their interactions with me. They were never sarcastic and they gave you the extra time you needed to feel supported. They really were the two who inspired me to go into education. I remember their classes being fun and looking forward to going to them. I never would have taken four years of Italian if it wasn’t for Ms. McVicker and I loved working on the yearbook with Ms. George. I probably would not have committed to that if she had not been the advisor.”

What do you miss about the Youngstown area?

“The food! My husband and three children all agree that Youngstown has the most ethnic, flavorful and tastiest restaurants. My parents’ (Tony ’70 and Patti Hackett Tringhese ’70) own an Italian specialty store in Cornersburg as part of that authentic, great food reputation Youngstown is known for having. There is no pizza or ice cream places in the Cleveland area that can compete with Handel’s Ice Cream and several of the pizza joints in town. Social media has made staying in touch with classmates so much easier. Many in the Youngstown and Clevealnd area will message me and ask for the “Youngstown Booth” (dubbed by my mom Patti) in the bar area.”

“The energy and vibe downtown right now is fantastic. You can feel the people’s pride in the city.”
