Humans of Ursuline High New UHS Tech Mooney Week Recap Another One-derful Beginning to Ursuline Theatre! Earlier this October, the Ursuline Drama Department, led by Mrs. Williams, opened its doors for the season. The first production of the year was the student-directed One Acts. The One Acts consisted of short theatre productions written, directed, and performed solely by Ursuline students from the International Thespian Society. Admission was a canned good donation for the Second Harvest Food Bank. This year, there were five shows: "The Adventures of Eddie Poe" by Gabrielle Augustin and Paige Brockway, "Boy Crazy" by Dominic Adams and Veronica Brown, "The Butterfly Effect" by Keila Cortes and Lauren Ladd, "The Double Date" by Tommy DeLuca, and finally, "Bobby Wilson Can Eat His Own Face" written by Don Zolidis and directed by Spencer Humphreys. When photojournalist Brandon Stanton bought his first camera in 2010, he had no idea the impact his photography would have on the world. Upon arriving in New York City, he set out to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers. Through these photos and short interviews with his subjects, he came across thousands of diverse people from different walks of life. Eventually, he created a Facebook page entitled “Humans of New York,” where he posted the photos and comments of his subjects. This page went viral, and since then, Humans of New York has grown to span across several social media platforms, including Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr. It has also expanded outside of New York’s concrete walls, with Stanton travelling across the globe to document people and their stories from all parts of the world. While Stanton has undoubtedly managed to capture hundreds of wonderful people, he has missed a great selection of people right here in Youngstown-the people of Ursuline High School. This column is dedicated to, in Stanton’s unique journalistic style, the brilliant Humans of Ursuline. - Quinn Barton

MU: Wisdom for the Ursuline student body…. I guess I would say take advantage of only being responsible for yourself. You’re in high school now, you only have to worry about you. You’re going to be in college next, and ideally you only have to worry about you, hopefully. It’s a lot harder for student who have kids, blatantly, because they have to worry about both themselves and their kids. Also, I would say that if you have any questions about wanting to go past a bachelor's degree, do it right away, because it is a lot harder to do it later. You might feel like you are burned out, but it is a lot easier to do it right away. But yeah, because of both of those things, you can enjoy life a little more-but don’t enjoy it too much!

QB: Hahaha, yes, I agree.

MU: But yeah, try and establish a good basis for yourself while you’re still single and don’t have kids. It is a huge blessing being able to create a stable family, no matter what it looks like. It is just a lot easier to dedicate time to a spouse or children if you get your degree first.

Sports ~ Soccer~

The Ursuline Irish girls' soccer team struggled a bit during the regular season, finishing with a record of 3-1-10. Tomlinson ('20), Rachel Petro ('20), Lucia Rohrbaugh ('20), Hunter Oliva ('20), Ellie Wasko ('20), Alyssa Kosovan ('21), Sering Limbu ('21), Cara McNally ('21), Colleen Rowland ('21), Tanner Schade ('22), Megan Wilson ('22), Mary Kate Hennessy ('22), and Van Hoang ('22). The girls’ team hopes to come back next year and have a great season!

The Ursuline boys' soccer team dominated the

back half of their season with their recent 3-2 win over Cardinal Mooney. The Varsity team’s record ended at 8-6-4 and the Junior Varsity’s record ended at 5-2-1 to conclude the season. In their first round of sectionals, the boys won 4-0 over West Branch. Their season came to a close after a 1-0 loss to Howland in the second round of playoffs. The Ursuline boys' soccer team consists of 40 players and are captained by Bo Gray ('19) and Leo Puhalla ('19).

Both the Ursuline Irish girls' and boys' soccer teams are led by head coach Roy Schmidt who brings 38 years of coaching experience and 44 years of playing experience and assistant coaches Mandi LaNeve (girls), Erica Lehn (girls), Zack Freer (boys), Ahmed Elkhafif (boys), and Alex Roswicz (goalkeeping). - Taylor Tomlinson

~ Volleyball ~ This year has been exciting for the volleyball team. They finished their season with the best

record in recent Ursuline history, ending the season with 16 wins and 6 losses. The team had some great wins against Mooney and Girard. The team included four seniors, Destiny Goodnight, Jenna O’Hara, Adriana Parella, and Paige Brockway. Jenna O’Hara comments, “It was the most exciting and memorable year for me. We accomplished so many things physically and mentally and it will be a season I will never forget.” Great season lady Irish! - Paige Brockway

~ Golf ~ The 2018 Ursuline golf season was summarized best by senior Seamus Chrystal, when he said,

“We took it shot by shot, putt by putt, and we accomplished more than we would have imagined on day one.” Truly, the team performed at a very high level this year, which their long list of accomplishments serves to prove.

First of all, the golf team does not have a definite record, as their schedule is made up of a variety of competitions, including matches against one or multiple teams and tournaments against ten or more other squads. However, there were a number of notable finishes throughout the season at several of competitions. The team, led by seniors Seamus Chrystal and Alex Stoneman, finished third at the Brookfield Invitational and won the Catholic Tri-Match Series. Furthermore, the team performed very well against Cardinal Mooney this season, as they defeated the Cardinals in numerous tournaments throughout the season. Lastly, the team performed exceptionally at the Sectional competition, placing second, with Chrystal, Stoneman, and junior Ethan Sicafuse placing in the top 10 individually.

The team is also primed for success in future years. It returns three of its top five Varsity golfers, including Sicafuse, sophomore Joey Brooks, and freshman Nicco Sabella next year. Sicafuse put it best when he said, “We won some and we lost some, but in the end, it was a good year.” Stay tuned to see what the team accomplishes by this time next year. - Alex Stoneman

~ Tennis ~ The Ursuline Girls’ Tennis Team, under new coaching from Kent Blacksher and Rick

Gayos, had a very impressive season, concluding with a record of twelve and three. The team consisted of Lexie Tsudis, Vy Hoang, Liz Bokone, Hannah Stoneburner, Angelina Cianciola, Caroline Scharf, Grace Cripe, Josie Kobak, Claire MacDonald, Emma Thornton, Ella Kobak, Anna Morgione, and Lanna Dellick. At the sectional tournament, Lanna Dellick, Grace Cripe, and Claire MacDonald played singles, and freshman Lanna qualified for the district tournament. Along with Lanna, the two doubles teams, Lexie Tsudis and Vy Hoang, and Anna Morgione and Emma Thorton, both qualified for districts. Seniors Lexie Tsudis and Vy Hoang qualified for the state tournament, ending their final season well. The team played Cardinal Mooney twice—and won both times—and overall had a very eventful and successful season! -Caroline Scharf

~ Cross Country Team ~ The Ursuline Cross Country team had yet another great year! Although the team

struggled from some early injuries, they rallied towards the end of their season with almost all of the runners breaking their personal records. The team competed in their last meet on October 20th and fared well in the District placing 9th out of 20 teams for the boys. The girls also had a great season with all new members to the team running (returning sophomore Emily Holland was injured and out for the duration of the season). Despite the youth of the girls’ team, they performed extremely well and all managed to lower their times greatly. The team will miss its three seniors next year. Steve Babik, Joel Kreuzwieser, and Ben Rovnyak were all in the top five runners on the team. -Brady Leugers

1. Maze Craze - Corn maze in Columbiana 2. The Scaregrounds - Haunted House at Canfield Fairgrounds

3. Hiking - Trails at Mill Creek Park 4. Pumpkin Walk - A display of carved pumpkins at the Rose Garden

~ Halloween recipe: Cake Eyeballs ~ Recipe courtesy of Ree Drummond and Food Network INGREDIENTS:

- One (18.25-ounce) box red velvet or yellow cake mix (plus required ingredients)

- One (12-ounce) can frosting (any kind)

- 12 ounces white chocolate melting disks

- Assorted gel icing, for decorating

DIRECTIONS:

1. Prepare the cake mix according to the package directions for a 9-by-13-inch cake or two 9-inch cakes. Allow to cool slightly in the pan, then remove to a rack, cover with a dish towel and let cool completely.

2. Break off sections of the cake and crumble in a large bowl. When finished, you should have a bunch of very fine cake crumbs. Using a rubber spatula, work the frosting into the cake until it is no longer visible. (Even if you use white frosting with red velvet cake, the white will eventually blend in entirely.)

3. Next, roll the mixture into 1 1/2-inch balls (a small ice cream scoop helps with this) and set on a parchment-lined baking sheet. This is important: Pop 'em in the freezer, uncovered, for at least an hour. The cake balls need to be very firm before coating them.

Page 7: Humans of New UHS Mooney Tech Week Recap...Humans of Ursuline High New UHS Tech Mooney Week Recap Another One-derful Beginning to Ursuline Theatre! Earlier this October, the Ursuline

4. When the cake balls are nice and firm, place the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. (Don't let the bowl touch the water.) Stir occasionally until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove the bowl from the pan. Add the cake balls one at a time to the melted white chocolate and gently roll to coat. Using a fork, lift out the cake balls, then tap the fork against the side of the bowl to remove the excess chocolate. With a toothpick, push the ball off of the fork and back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet.

5. Let it sit at room temperature, 10 to 15 minutes. Decorate with gel icing to look like eyeballs. – Paige Brockway

~ Halloween Costumes ~ To say the least, the past year has been a thrill ride. To reflect this, you might be looking for a

costume to perfectly show what kind of topics have emerged since last Halloween. These costumes range from basic ones you can do yourself to elaborate ones that require major effort. Here’s my list of top Halloween costumes this year.

1. Minecraft-The first costume is for all the gamers. Slap on some drab-looking clothes in muted colors and carry around a pickaxe. To really sell the look, add some green around your costume and crouch in the corner to really show that you are a bush-camping noob.

2. Minecraft/Lil Pump-Want to show that you are the best Lil Pump and Minecraft fan? This is the costume for you. Cut out some boxes to fit onto yourself, color them light blue and navy, and walk around saying, “I love it.”

3. Spiderman-Are you a crazy Marvel fan like me? Try the SpiderMan costume. Find one of your mom’s nice vases and put some pencil shavings and baking powder into it, label it Peter and *Spoiler Alert* mourn his death throughout the day.

4. Bandwagon Fan-Do you love the NBA? Put two wheels on each of your feet and a LeBron jersey on your chest and follow people around all day long. For an added effect, tape a stick to yourself with the words Los Angeles on it. With this look, you will complete the bandwagon LeBron fan.

5. Pete Davidson-Love comedy and following TMZ? Dress up as everyone’s favorite hipster on SNL by taping a broken heart to your chest and constantly laughing at the most inopportune times. With these actions and this outfit, you will complete the Pete Davidson look.

6. Starbucks-Starbucks is a great place for great coffee. To show your love for the establishment, dress up as one of their regular customers. Put on a button-up shirt, scarf, beanie, and really funky glasses. To complete the look, carry around a Starbucks cup with your name spelled wrong on it.

7. Kanye West-Going for a different approach to superheroes? Buy yourself a MAGA hat and clothes too big for you so they droop onto the floor. Walk around with a smug but confident look on your face and speak in rants about your struggles as a multi-millionaire. Finally, end every sentence with, “In this hat, I feel like Superman.”

Page 8: Humans of New UHS Mooney Tech Week Recap...Humans of Ursuline High New UHS Tech Mooney Week Recap Another One-derful Beginning to Ursuline Theatre! Earlier this October, the Ursuline

8. Rob Gronkowsi-Another one for the sports fans. Find your baggiest sweatshirt, slap a Patriots logo in the middle of it and proclaim to all that you are awesome. For an extra spice, you might want to walk around with a confused look on your face to really sell the Rob Gronkowski look. One more idea to increase your Gronk-ness is to carry around Tide Pods all day long. *WARNING: DO NOT EAT THE TIDE PODS*

9. Browns Fan-Final one for the sports fans. Again, dress in your drab colored clothes, but this time tape a Browns logo onto your tee shirt. When a teacher gives an assignment, always ask for additional time, past the amount you are normally given, and still get a C on it. Finally, to fully accent the Browns atmosphere, have the most hopeful attitude and complain about the refereeing being unfair.

10. Johnny Johnny-For all the expert meme lovers out there, this final costume is for you. Grab a big bag of sugar from the cabinet and dress in overalls for the day. Whenever anyone asks you a question respond with, “Yes, papa,” or “No, papa,” and sneak off at bad times, only to be caught by someone. As an added bonus with this costume, you have a sweet treat to eat all day! - Brady Leugers

~ Mooney Week Recap ~ Name something more spirited than this year’s Mooney Rally - I’ll wait. This year’s Mooney Rally, and Mooney Week as a whole, was undoubtedly one of the best Mooney weeks in Ursuline history. Thank you very much to the fantastic administration, dedicated student body (with painting signs and decorating the halls), and our hardworking senior class. While the rally and week were generally extraordinary, here are some of the highlights:

● The video clip of seniors Louie and Luke to the tune of “I’ve Had the Time Of My Life”, based off of the Super Bowl commercial with Odell Beckham Jr. and Eli Manning.

● Carpool Karaoke as a whole, but especially Mrs. Lacko’s group! If only they could have decided on a song…

● The performance of “This Is Our House” by senior Tommy Deluca. ● Sign painting sessions after school, and all of the wonderfully creative signs from

students across all grade levels made at these parties. Most notably were the ones saying, “Mooney Likes Candy Corn”, “Trick or treat, smell our cleats, UHS can’t be beat!”, and “Mooney winning? That’s just a bunch of Hocus Pocus!”

● The Thriller dance number during the rally! How spot-on was that? ● The wonderful performances from our color guard, twirler, and the Ursuline

cheerleaders! ● Being able to see such enthusiasm for our school on a Green and Gold day!

Features ~Procrastination: A Student’s worst enemy~

Procrastination, defined by Merriam-Webster, is “to put off intentionally and habitually.” Many students will procrastinate in their day to day lives, whether procrastinating to study for a chemistry test, or procrastinating to clean your room at the end of the week. It’s something that feels almost unavoidable. Do not worry, though, there are some ways to avoid procrastination:

● Break your work into small steps

Most people procrastinate because they feel the task that needs to be finished is either too big or too hard. Breaking up your tasks will allow you to finish little bits at a time, making it seem more manageable.

● Give yourself a due date/time

Instead of working all night before your teacher’s due date, give yourself a personal due date maybe a few days earlier.

● Imagine how it will feel once you’re done

There is no better feeling in the world than when you are completely done with a huge project. The relief and weight being lifted off your shoulders is almost euphoric. Try to imagine this feeling while you are procrastinating.

● Reward yourself

For example, when you finish one of the small steps you’ve taken, give yourself a break to listen to your favorite song. As another example, when you’ve finished cleaning your room, go hang out with your friends.

Procrastination is tough, but it is not impossible to overcome. Hopefully these tips will help you overcome your current and future feelings of procrastination. - Emily Ross

~ Canfield Fair Volunteer Experience ~ This past summer I volunteered in the Red Cross building at the local Canfield Fair. With

this article, I want to give you an inside peek at what its really like to be a Red Cross volunteer.

Showing up for my first five-hour shift, I didn’t know what to expect. It was an extremely hot Friday morning and the weather was only going to get worse. Unfortunately, the night before, the AC in the building had malfunctioned. Therefore, the doors were swung wide open and huge industrial fans were placed at each entrance to cool the place down. I reported to the main office and collected my badge and t-shirt. I was shown the back lounge and told that I should leave my personal belongings in there. I was supposed to change in the bathroom and then come back out to the front.

The first case was a little girl, around the age of six, who had been bitten by a horse. I was shocked but dove right in; I observed as a more experience volunteered cleaned and dressed the wound. Meanwhile, I was instructed on how to fill out paperwork and receive what was needed from the patient and family. The little girl was very calm, received a lollipop at the end as a reward, and went along with the rest of her day.

Throughout the rest of the day, we handled minor and major injuries that varied from heat strokes to anaphylactic shock. A young man came in and explained that he had been bitten by a bee, to which he was allergic. However, he had not brought his Epi-Pen and hoped that we had one. Unfortunately, we did not. The EMT station that shared our building sent out a call, and his mother brought the Epi-Pen within the hour. He luckily was not seriously harmed by his allergic reaction.

During the few shifts that I volunteered, I made many acquaintances, all who taught me the basics of First Aid. I still keep in contact with the people I met this summer, and hopefully I will get to use the tips they taught me! It was lovely working with such talented and dedicated people who volunteered their time help out the community! If I got the chance, I would volunteer again in a heartbeat. If you ever get the chance, whether you are interested in the medical field or not, I truly recommend spending time volunteering at the Red Cross building at the Canfield Fair. – Vy Hoang

Entertainment ~ Classic Movie Review: Oh, God! ~ Court Clerk: Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? God: So help me, me. Judge Baker: So help you, you? God: If it pleases the court, and even if it doesn't please the court, I'm God, Your Honor.

Oh, God! is a 1977 comedy film starring George Burns as God and John Denver as Jerry Landers, an assistant supermarket manager. After God attempts to set up an “interview” with Jerry Landers, God tells Jerry to be His messenger to the modern world. At first, he is shocked, but he ultimately becomes God’s messenger and tells his wife (Teri Garr), children, a religious editor of the Los Angeles Times, and the rest of the world of his meeting with God. He soon becomes a national icon.

This movie is a mysterious and religious comedy that will either leave you feeling sorry for a character or shocked about the ending, maybe even a bit of both. Some jokes in the movie will either make you wonder or ask questions, while others might just make you laugh your pants off. On my scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best movie and 10 being the worst movie I have ever seen, I rate this movie a 4, because it was funny and left me wanting to know more about the characters. In the end, I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to watch a very mysterious comedy. -Van Hoang
