Dine for the Diner St. Joseph Diner, known for feeding the hungry in Acadiana since 1983, is hosting its annual Dine for the Diner fundraising event on Thursday, May 18, 2017. The community will be encouraged to eat out to end hunger at participating area restaurants. Dine for the Diner is a unique opportunity for local restaurants to fill up their tables and for St. Joseph Diner supporters in the community to help feed the hungry. St. Joseph Diner is one of 6 programs of Catholic Services of Acadiana that provides essential services to people expe-riencing homelessness in our area. On average St. Joseph Diner shares over 100,000 meals with the hungry each year. In addition to providing a free meal at lunch every day, the Diner creates a shared community space where volunteers and staff can engage with patrons - learning their names and their needs to assist them on their journey to self-sufficiency. These services would be impossible without the support of the community and the generosity of the restau-rants participating in this event. For a list of participating restaurants, visit catho-licservice.org/dineforthediner. Baby Items-Women's Center Some of you may have noticed that the 'bassinet' for baby items is now out every weekend. This is to make it easier for those who want to support new mothers in bringing their children into the world, at the Women's Center and their maternity home. Here is a list of items that are always needed: Paper towels; Liquid washing detergent (baby & adult); 13 gal trash bags; Deodorant; Windex; Pledge; Lysol; Shampoo; Condi-tioner; Bath Soap; Liquid dish washing gel; Ziplock bags; Gift cards for maternity clothes, etc.; Baby pow-er & lotion; Diaper rash ointment; Baby wash; Diapers (size 4 & 5). We have an active group that meets on Tuesdays, at 6 pm, in the classroom directly behind the Church (across from the restrooms). Anyone interested who missed the previous meetings is welcome to attend, even if you are not sure about continuing. Call: 337-233-6277 Retrouvaille Weekend Couples who are experiencing trouble in their marriag-es are invited to attend a Retrouvaille weekend in the Acadiana/Lafayette area May 26-27, 2017 Retrouvaille (the word is French for “rediscovery” or “reawakening”) is a Catholic ministry that encourages individual and spiritual growth, and the ultimate goal is to reinstall in hurting couples the joy and satisfaction of sacramental marriage. This is a peer ministry, meaning that all of the presenting couples are past at-tendees who came to Retrouvaille with marriages in trouble and who have firsthand experience of the bene-fits that can result. The weekends involve intensive work on communication skills and provide the founda-tion for the forgiveness and trust essential for rebuild-ing broken marriages. The six post-sessions frame up the concepts and provide practical solutions such as a method to resolve conflicts in a way that avoids the hurts of the past. For more information or to register for the weekend, please contact Stacy or Donea Benan-di at 985-714-2442-/2443, or Bill and Andi Says at 337-298-5170. Liturgical Roles for May

From the Pastor’s Desk

Last Sunday, the Gospel was the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Since this is by far my per-sonal favorite of the resurrection stories, I’m not ready to leave it behind yet. So consider this the homily, part two. There are only a handful of resurrection stories in the Gospels, and without a doubt there were other times when the disciples encountered the Risen Lord before the Ascension. Yet these are the stories which those early believers preserved, for themselves as well as for us. This passage from Luke was therefore that important to them.

There are probably many reasons for this. I’d like to focus on the last line of the passage: “how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread”. Keep in mind that some fifty years or so had passed before the author of Luke’s Gospel wrote down the stories he had collected. That means that while they were telling and re-telling this story, the communities of disciples had all that time to experience the celebration of the Eucharist. For decades, they had been gathering, telling these stories, (the Liturgy of the Word) and then doing what Jesus had done with bread and wine: taking, and blessing and breaking and sharing (the Liturgy of the Eucharist). It was from those gatherings that they were then sent out into the world to share the Good News.

When I think about those early communities of disciples, I imagine them figuring out who they were, what they were doing, and what it meant for them for Jesus to be the Risen Christ. While they certainly experi-enced the presence of Jesus in many ways, the encounter with Jesus in those gatherings would eventually come to be called an encounter with his “Real Presence”. They would also have told those stories of Jesus feeding the mul-titudes on the hillsides during his early ministry, and recalled his describing himself as the “Bread of Life”.

In the context of this experience, they told and re-told the story of the two disciples on the road to Em-maus, and how those two early believers (they would not be called ‘Christians’ for years) “came to know him in the breaking of the bread”. How could this story not be a powerful reminder of their own personal experience: They, too, in their ritual taking and blessing and breaking and sharing, had also come to know him in the Break-ing of the Bread. As a matter of fact, the entire Eucharist, what we call the Mass, was often know precisely as “The Breaking of the Bread”.

If those early believers—the Emmaus disciples, the other communities of disciples, Luke’s readers — could come to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread, then so can we. Real Presence, indeed!
